Things live vs. recorded Of the song Precious Things, AJ asked: > Which do you think is better? for me its undoubtedly the live... I'll agree and amplify on that. Over the course of the tours there was a definite progression of the arrangement, and some specific nights were stand-out performances. I know some of the people who have been to a lot of shows got tired of seeing some of the same songs all the time, even this one, but for me it was usually the highlight of a concert. One never knew exactly what her reading of it would be from one night to the next, but one could rely on its always being powerful. Some nights on the Dew Drop Inn, by the way she growled and pounded the piano, she seemed nearly possessed by a primitive creature from a dark forest. It could scare the hell out of you. A friend of mine who also saw a lot of DDI shows agrees with me that one could get a sense of where her head was on a given night by listening to a recording of PT. It seemed to make for a good barometer of each show and served as one of the touchstones of the concerts, usually being played at nearly the the exact center of them. Sometimes, such as during the Hard Rock Live version taped last October, she would slightly slow down the "peach party dress" portion of the song in such a way as to accentuate it, and to bring one along all the more into her deep feelings of hurt and her increasing anger as she revisited that night of adolescence. The depth of her ability to emotionally engage one with the songs is one thing that makes her shows so compelling to me. For me, this song in particular but also many of the others, appear as little more than blueprints on the studio recordings, and do genuinely live lives of their own out on the tours. The live shows rule. This week marks one year since the 5 1/2 Weeks Tour began. I miss the thrill and the anticipation of the shows. I don't miss yet another dinner at Denny's, though. ;-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 22:28:22 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Realplayer DLs of tori's live performances Any links available? - -AJ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 05:24:02 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V5 #183 In a message dated 8/12/2000 10:33:27 PM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: << "Copper to Steel, To a hinge that is faltered, One which lets you in, You've been wasting all my time, This time, I said you never learned to take, And if I'm hanging on to your shade, I guess I'm way beyond the pale" Tori Amos >> what song is this taken from?? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 14:50:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Wntrgrl Subject: Circles T-Shirt If there's a Hot Topic where you live you could probably buy one there.
