What I am wondering though is if anyone has copies of the Portland or Seattle shows and if they recorded Jude, the awesome opener. If so, please email me privately, I am very interested in receiving copies of these shows, preferably on CD-R. I know there is an old hymn (well, I don't know how old) that we used to sing at my old church called Beulah Land about going home to Beulah Land. I can't think of how it goes though, because everytime I sing the word now, only Tori's song comes out! I don't know any origin of the word, though, I have observed that it does seem to me that it's used a lot more by those Christian churches that consider themselves more independent. My thought on it always was that it was a song she made when playing around with the old hymn, something that came from the hymn, but entirely different from the song she may have heard growing up - but this is *JUST* speculation. (Remember on the Icicle from, I think, Unplugged, Tori does the improv with Onward Christian soldiers? and tells the story of how, "I used to listen to hymns every day of my life...and I would make stories up around the hymns...I know they didn't tell this story right!" something like that) - -emily ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 18:05:23 EST From: RedSpark18@aol.com Subject: a NEW fundraiser for RAINN I am selling Soaps for Rainn! As a side note, I was there, in the second row right in front of tori and I really did not see who she was flipping off...of course, I was paying attention to Tori :P, but there were also some drunk girls next to me who were not paying attention as well - vegas, you know..anyway...the next night in Irvine she did a little improv about it too, something like, "that guy last night, I flipped him off.." I'm afraid it's not that simple. I only have the 1000 oceans hyper-cd and indeed the video is on the disc. But, it is crypted or somehow protected so that if you just try to play it in your regular mpeg player, it simply doesn't work... it needs a file (a "key") on the web to play it... Wether you can download that file and use it off-line or not, I don't know cos I don't really care (I'm on cable), but it sure isn't very simple. Hope this helps. I was in a place with a large group, so I was too distracted during Alanis to develop a sense of how it felt. I can tell you how long the sets actually were, though. Tori's set was complete as she performed it that day (9/24/99, in Las Vegas), and seemingly, so was Alanis's. Tori's set was an hour twenty-two minutes long and Alanis's was an hour thirty-one minutes. This was *easily* Alanis's longest set on the entire tour, and Tori's set tied with the 82-minute one she did on her birthday as her longest show of the entire 5 1/2 Weeks Tour, too. (Although on her birthday, about four minutes of the show was the crew and Alanis coming out onstage to wish her a happy birthday.) There was almost zero introductory material once the pay per view was on. They went almost immediately into Tori's set, then played Alanis's set. The whole thing played for two hours and fifty-five minutes. Seeing as how 82 minutes plus 91 minutes is two hours fifty-three minutes, I can't see how any songs by either act could have been cut. I didn't watch Alanis live that night in Vegas, and I didn't keep a set list for her that night, either. I was talking with friends on the concourse and did make note of the times her set began and ended, though. Some creative shot selection was used to gloss over two of the trouble spots in Tori's set. (They went to a real long shot when Tori's crew member Chris came out to right her microphone stand during Hotel, and although Tori was shown giving the finger in no uncertain terms during Waitress to an offending audience member, they managed not to show her leading the audience in following suit.) They kept in the entire screw-up episode during Widow, and the resultant Tori and band playing the hilarious blues number, "Things Fuck Up Sometimes"--a timeless classic if there ever was one. I believe they ended up playing that three times over the course of the '99 tours. There was a bit too much camera movement and bouncing from one camera to the next for my taste, but up through Suede (the first song after Secret Time) it was a strong quality show. Can't say I'm entirely pleased that this show was the one chosen to represent that tour, but it could have been much worse. They could have taped one of the shows where Tori had been screaming obscenities from the stage at local security; or even worse, the Mansfield, Massachusetts show. Someone posted an article from TV Guide's Ultimate Cable Guide on the forum on The Dent. In it, Tori mentioned the "finger" incident-- http://atwebsites.com/forums/Forum23/HTML/000317.html [ . . . ] TVG: What was the Vegas show like? TA: Well, Vegas is always tricky. You get those people who got their discount ticket coupons from the Mirage or wherever we were. Banter with the audience can add to the show, but when one person decides to ruin it for the rest, that's not going to happen on my time. My shows are about mutual respect. I ran into one of those fans that night in Vegas. This guy was just stupid and drunk. I gave him the finger for 30 seconds until he got it. [ . . . ] Michael will likely have that article up in the general news area of The Dent and in his article archive by the time this gets posted to the list. I'd also encourage folks to check out the show comments from Vegas on The Dent for more info as to how the show went-- http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/weeks26.html She was shooting the Glory video in L.A. on the "off" day until 2am or something that morning, and then had to do an interview with Kevin and Bean on L.A. morning radio. Lovely planning, I have to say. "Let's see how exhausted we can make her be, and then shoot a pay per view event in a difficult town." Gotta love it. I'm amused that Tori is oblivious to the name of the place they played, which was the same place Bette Midler performed this past New Year's eve at Mandalay Bay. The venue is part of a huge hotel-casino complex. With the end stage configuration they had that day it seats 9,000. (According to an usher that day, anyhow.) The venue itself was beautiful, but I hated Vegas more than any other town on the entire tour. I'd have never gone there in a million years were it not for that damn bottle-redhead. Anyway, as to the "finger" incident: What I heard was that there was a guy who was making fun of people doing the "hang ten" hand gestures during Waitress and Tori got pissed-off. (I can't verify this. Well, I can verify only that she was pissed-off.) One person whose perception I trust more than average was near the offending party and seemed to feel they were just acting incredibly loud, drunk and rude. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. P.S.: Unrelated to this, there's a pair of HIGHLY amusing photos on The Dent forum at-- http://atwebsites.com/forums/Forum25/HTML/000328.html Check them out. You won't be sorry. Phone the kids and wake the neighbors. Really--it's THAT funny. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V5 #45 ************************************
