This is off-topic, but since I've mentioned my eye surgery on this list before, and the moderator was so gracious as to let it be posted, I have a VERY IMPORTANT follow-up note that I HAVE TO share with you all. Please read. It's important. I just wanted to comment on tonight's PrimeTime Live segment on the LASIK laser procedure (like what I had done a few weeks ago). They told the story of a guy who had the surgery and was considered a success by the surgeon because he could see 20/20; however, his vision in low light was significantly damaged due to the procedure. In low light conditions, he sees starbursts and halos around all lights (like street lights and headlights), he even sees double (still, only in low light conditions). It affects him so much that he has to watch TV in total brightness, and cannot drive at night because it is so annoying. This ONLY happens to him in low light. The segment said that he shouldn't have had the surgery because he was really not a good candidate due to 3 things: the combination of EXTREME near-sightedness, astigmatism, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, large pupils. I, too, had these 3 conditions before I had surgery. My vision was 20/800, I had astigmatism, and my pupils are large. (I never knew this until my laser surgeon told me, so be sure and ask. They have a way of measuring the size.) And I DO suffer from the same side effects of the guy in the special, but NOT NEARLY to the same degree. In fact, I have always seen slight halos and starbursts around street lights and headlights when I drive at night, but I've never really been affected by it, and am in fact, surprised that everyone does not have the same problem because I have had this problem my whole life-- I honestly thought this just came along with low light conditions. In fact, I now see billboards late at night better than most people who ride in my car these days. However, my surgeon DID TELL ME about my large pupil problem, and he got 2 other in-office doctors' opinions before he would let me have the surgery. The large pupil problem is the MOST IMPORTANT factor when and if you decide to get the surgery done (the special was misleading about the astigmatism and the near-sightedness-- it really is pupil size that determines your low-light vision ability). If your doctor tells you that you have large pupils (you should ask!!!), you may definitely want to reconsider getting the surgery done, especially if you see VERY clearly at night right now and do NOT see halos at all. But since I've always had this problem, I am not suffering any more than I ever have in low light conditions. In fact, even though I have large pupils, I still see WAY better since the procedure than I EVER did with glasses or contacts. Also, if you're having the procedure, make sure you go to a doctor that has hundreds of procedures under his belt and does more than 5 tests on your eyes (that may take 2-3 hours) before determining if you're a good candidate. Mine did. My doctor was very good, and I really recommend him. If my pupils have been ANY LARGER AT ALL, he wouldn't have let me do it. But I had borderline large pupils, and he did forewarn me and let me make my own decision. Also, do not let them use a VISIX laser on you if you decide to get the procedure done. It is the SECOND best laser out there. With this laser, there is a chance that your vision may recede by as much as 8% the year following the procedure because the ablation with this type of laser is not as smooth as what was used on me. Sorry, but I can't remember the name of the laser my doctor used, but the one used on me has a risk of only 1% decreased vision, if any at all. So, I'm just telling you this so that you are more well-informed on the subject. If you or anyone you know is considering the procedure, keep this email, print it out, make photocopies, and shop around for the BEST doctor in your area. My doctor can recommend someone in your area if you have trouble choosing one. In fact, my doctor and his partner are THE TWO top opthamologists in East Tennessee who train all of the other opthamologists for the procedure's techniques. (He even has several patents hanging in his office for opthamology research instruments he's invented.) His waiting room did not ever contain more than 2-3 people, and his staff did NOT rush us in and out like cattle. My visits were always very long and detailed, so I have a high degree of confidence in this man and his staff. You should have the same type of office experience at your opthamologist, or go to someone else. Seriously. Any questions? Please email me. - -jen ===== "The common cold virus is the cockroach of all illnesses-- hundreds of breeds, constantly mutating, impossible to destroy... I run the site _a musical butterfly: my tribute to Tori Amos_(http://fly.to/musicalbutterfly) and I really want to start a new section because i've never seen one like it. The new section i want to start is a collection of books that tori has read, recommended, or gets song references from. I know that Tori is a voracious reader and has probably read hundreds of books that have influenced her life and music and I really wanted to get a list for Toriphiles so they can read them and be influenced, learn more, etc. If any of you can offer any help or know any books that Tori has read that I don't have listed it would be GREATLY appreciated. The books I know tori has read/recommended are: On The Road by Jack Keroac Possessing The Secret of Joy by Alice Walker, others by Alice Walker? The Awakening by Kate Chopin Possibly Lord of the Flies by William Golding Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Anything by Neil Gaiman Sylvia Plath? Owning Your Own Shadow by Robert A. Johnson The Creation of Health by Caroline Myss and C. Norman Shealy Goddesses in Everywoman: A New Psychology of Women by Jean Bolen Addiction to Perfection by Marion Woodman I also know that Tori enjoys the poetry of e. e. cummings and t.s. elliot. Any books that any of you gave Tori(that you thought she would like) at meet and greets, etc would also be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry this is so long but I've searched and searched and the books listed above are all I can come up with. So if you can offer any help please post to the list or email me at hp@hotmail.com Thanks and tori love, Holly http://fly.to/musicalbutterfly ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V5 #4 ***********************************
