Shine On*, Michelle ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 20:50:15 -0800 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: recommended books A while back I asked for people to help me compile a list of books Tori has recommended over the years. I'm sure that this list is woefully incomplete, but here is a sampling of what I've received. If you have others to add, please do so (if you can reference a specific artile where she talked about the book, that would be even better): Anything by Joseph Campbell "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh "Goddesses in Everywoman" by Jean Shinoda Bolen "The Virgin Suicides," Jeffrey Eugenides "The Bloodline of the Holy Grail," Laurence Gardner "Neverwhere," Neil Gaiman "Death: The High Cost of Living," Neil Gaiman "The Fruitful Darkness," Joan Halifax "Owning Your Own Shadow," Robert Johnson "Bringers of the Dawn," Barbara Marciniak "The Creation of Health: The Emotional Psychological, and Spiritual Responses That Promote Health and Healing," Caroline Myss and C. Norman Shealy "Possessing the Secret of Joy," Alice Walker "Temple of My Familiar," Alice Walker anything by Marion Woodman Holy Blood, Holy Grail Women of Classical Mythology The 32nd Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology 1910-'11 In addition to this list, I would love to compile a list of books that people have given to Tori over the years. One request: please don't tell me you gave her a copy of the pressed fairy book. I know about that one already. :) Thanks all, Beth - -- "If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts." Hi, As some of you know, I met Brian and Wendy Froud recently at a book signing in Berkeley. After meeting them, I started hunting around the Internet for a list devoted to the discussion of their works. I found a few for specific works -- "The Dark Crystal" for instance -- but nothing for them as a whole. So I decided to start my own. Jeff and Woj at smoe.org were kind enough to offer me an address at smoe, and the list works very much like the precious-things list, which some of you probably belong to. For those of you not familiar with the work of Brian and Wendy Froud, Brian is the illustrator and co-conspirator on books like "Faeries," "Lady Cottington's Pressed Faery Book," "Good Faeries/Bad Faeries," and the designer of the worlds in movies like "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth." Wendy is a doll and puppetmaker; among her creations are Yoda in the Star Wars movies and the Gelflings in "The Dark Crystal," and has just released a book, "A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale," with famed author and editor Terri Windling. Anyhow, for more information about the list itself, go here: http://www.devin.com/echoes/faeries.html This includes all information about how to subscribe to the regular or digest versions of the list. Come, and join in the conversation! Beth - -- "If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts." The 80s singles have not yet been re-released. The catalogue numbers on all the mispressings are as you indicated above. /nad ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #347 *************************************
