The following is from _Saints Preserve Us! Everything You Need To Know About Every Saint You'll Ever Need_ by Sean Kelly and Rosemary Rogers. Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but a capsule biography. - ------------------------------------------------------ Joan of Arc - May 30 Patroness of France and the Military Like the gods about whom Homer sang, the Saints in Heaven have been known to take a partisan interest in mortal politics--as when, in 1426 (the eighty-ninth year ot the Hundred Years' War), Saints Catherine, Margaret, and Michael . . . decided to assist the Valois party of Charles of Orleans against his rival the Burgundians and their English allies. It was their wish that the dauphin Charles of France (to all appearances a treacherous and cowardly toad) become the king of France; They chose as their instrument of policy a teenage farm girl named Jeanne d'Arc, to whom They appeared (infrequently) and spoke (constantly). Thanks to many hundreds of books and plays and films, everyone knows what happened next: Jeanne, clad in white armor, rode at the head of the dauphin's army, while he himself remained prudently at the rear. She raised the seige of Orleans, and was wounded by an arrow in the breast. The dauphin was crowned. Jeanne attacked Paris, and was wounded by an arrow in the thigh. Charles dallied at court. She was captured at Compeigne by the Burgundians, and sold to the English. Her king expressed no interest in her plight, attempting neither ransom nor rescue. Because she would not deny her Saints, inquisitors found her guilty of heresy, and turned her over to the civil authorities. Because she had opposed their occupation of her country, the English concluded she was a witch. She was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. She was almost nineteen years old. Over the centuries, such cantankerous agnostics as Mark Twain and George Bernard Shaw have fallen madly in love with her. Joan was officially canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920. We invite anyone who has a word to say against her to step outside and say it. - ----------------------------------------------------------- Don't know how accurate this is, historically, but there you are. deadfong ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Nov 1999 09:20:20 EST From: "Tha Shaigirl" Subject: Glory of the 80's Hello! I really want to open them, but if it is best I won't. Also, how do we get tickets to the Conneticut show? I tried Ticketmaster but that didn't work. Hmmm. Joshua S. She was a poor daughter of a farmer and lived in Domrémy. She said she received images that she should free Orléans. She was arrested near Compiègne in 1430 and the English burned her saying she was a witch because she became too strong. hope that helped:) bye Anna *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* you burned me out, but I'm back at your door like Joan of Arc coming back for more. Toodles, Amelia >> This is just a bit of what we have on our website about Joan of Arc - for more info go here: joan of arc http://members.aol.com/gud4astorm/joan.html When Joan was about 12 years old, she began hearing "voices" of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret believing them to have been sent by God. These voices told her that it was her divine mission to free her country from the English and help the dauphin gain the French throne. They told her to cut her hair, dress in man's uniform and to pick up the arms. Joan convinced the captain of the dauphin's forces, and then the dauphin himself of her calling. After passing an examination by a board of theologians, she was given troops to command and the rank of captain. I finally got to the mall today to check up on some CD's. I was in the tori section and they had imports of "Talula (Tornado Mix)" one made in Germany the other in England (different artwork and songs). There was also an import (different from the other single w/ bachlorette and something else.... ) of the spark single with spark, cooling and... something else.. i forget! Anyway, i have never seen these before and my question is are they rareties? I have them on hold. The three of them are 11.99 each (us dollars). Oh, also another one i had never seen before and picked up- the "In the Springtime of His Voodoo" CD maxi single and i also picked up the Jackie's Strength CD5 maxi single... cause i am on a tight budget. so, any info u have on the 3 imports would be very helpful :) Thank yas.
