And here's why: Alice Malsenior Walker was born on February 9, 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, the eighth and youngest child of Minnie Tallulah Grant Walker and Willie Lee Walker. Her mother's grandmother Tallulah was mostly Cherokee Indian. Alice is deeply proud of her cultural inheritances. Her world traveling broadened her mind and happiness. Yet, all this turned to despair when back at university for her senior year Alice realized she was pregnant. Frightened and not knowing how to tell her parents, Alice considered committing suicide and even slept with a razor blade under her pillow for several weeks. With the help of a classmate, Alice was able to have a safe abortion. During her recovery from the depression and anxiety she had suffered, Alice wrote a short story aptly titled "To Hell With Dying." >From Alice Walker Biography at http://wwwvms.utexas.edu/~melindaj/bio.html Michelle Tori Lyrics Information at The Biggest Thickest Ever Sky: http://members.aol.com/gud4astorm/index.html "Go out in the woods, go out. I was going through the recent AOL chat today looking for books Tori had recommended there to add to a "Tori recommends" page or something along those lines. Since she mentioned a ton of wines in there as well, and also in Wine X, I just combined what she mentioned in those two. If others know of more she's mentioned, including quotes about the wines themselves, please feel free to email me. Here goes: Tori's famous story about how she got into wine: "Al Stewart ("The Year of the Cat") asked me to write something for him. The first song I came up with was something that ended up being "Silent All These Years." Obviously, I didn't give it to him. But I did give him something else, and we got on really well. One night he took me, my producer and his girlfriend out to dinner with four bottles in tow -- a Champagne, a Chablis and two Bordeaux. "He said Burgundy's for sex, Bordeaux for intellect. Then he asked me if I'd ever had good wine. I told him what I drank and he said, 'No, you've never had good wine.' I mean it wasn't screwtop, but to him it was absolute crap. We drank all four bottles. "That night changed my life. I had started out with chardonnay. That's how I opened up to wine, because it's like a milkshake without the dairy, if you know what I mean. So that Chablis that Al brought along that night changed my whole view of what a white wine was. And now I'm really getting into Chablis. I think when Al exposed me to the French side of things --I mean I was coming from the California side because I lived there -- I was just blown away." (Wine X, December 1998) Corton-Charlemange "The initial jolt was when I was having a really good Corton-Charlemagne with two of my girlfriends in Ohio. I think it was a Dayton show, but it was near the end of the tour last year. And I knew that we were doing a live record and at the time I thought we were doing a B-side record with a few extra tracks, not knowing what the few extra tracks were at all because they hadn't been written yet. So, my two friends were coming up with all sorts of things and I knew I had to go to somewhere and back from somewhere. Finally, after all of, you can imagine the silliness, Natalie looked at me and said, you'd go to Venus and back if you could. And I looked at her and said, absolutely wherever Venus is, I would go there." (AOL Chat, September 29, 1999) Pomerol Bordeaux "When you get a 1990, you're really in heaven." (Wine X, December 1998) Borolo Kissler Silver Oak 1992 cabernet "I really love that. It's all gone now. I don't have anymore. They tell me to lay it down, but I haven't gotten that concept yet." (Wine X, December 1998) Montrashet White Burgundy Comments on wines tried during an interview with Wine X magazine, but not really recommendations: 1989 Chateau Haut Brion "I see this wine like a wave... in Hawaii. And as we're cruising through it, it has a lot of upper mids like the curve right under the crest of the wave. The upper mids is what I call it in music. If I'm telling the engineer to open my upper mids, that's like B above middle C. The C above middle C, C-D- that range - that's all working for me in this wine. It's not high highs like G. Violins would be playing it -- it's too high for a viola. And I don't get a lot of cello in this wine. But I do get a bit of bass. It's beautiful. We're having fun." (Wine X, December 1998) Heitz Cellars 1985 Martha's Vineyard cabernet "This one's like the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders -- everybody wants them and they're a bit airbrushed and everything. I would give it to the band. It's a bit like a pop hit -- there's no Bartok existing in this. Do you mind if I switch back? If I'm going to drink wine before the show, I'd rather drink the first one." (Wine X, December 1998) Beth - -- "I couldn't take it anymore so I went back to the sea 'Cause that's where fishes go when the fishes get the sense to flee." Tori shared the bill with a hand puppet squeaking "Nessun Dorma" (try a search for "Sooty" or "Sooty and Sweep" - there may be something) and a woman who hosts a "hilarious home videos" type of show, oh and *another* girl band called "Atomic Kitten"... wonderful. But of course it was great to see her back in the UK in the run up to the concert tomorrow, Jools on Saturday and the "Billy Bragg" show on Radio 2, also Saturday.. Tori finally made her appearance at 12:10 - minutes before I had to leave for a tutorial - the presenter announcing her before the commercial break couldn't pronounce her name, and probably hadn't got a clue who she was... good little biography... clips of "Silent All These Years", "Cornflake Girl", "Professional Widow" (Remix). She did a really cool little interview snippet... talks about her days in the 80s... very cool... *VERY* cool. She was really happy, smiley. Played Glory Of The 80s - with a backing tape and live vocal... not as good as it could have been, because it was exactly the same as the record, y'know? I'm not big on backing tapes, personally. It was like.. weird. She had a keyboard on top of the piano and was playing both at the same time - the vocal was definitely live, though and was obviously really great. I swear to god, though, she censored herself - where it's meant to say "who do I have to *shag* to get out of here" she said different like "wag" - the vocal was much clearer than it is on record, certainly at the end. That's all... it's just so good to see her back. :) I have to say, though, that it raised a few questions about tomorrow's show... assuming no Caton, are we going to be treated to Tori with backing tapes all night? It's not a thought that particularly appeals to be, frankly... from Venus she can only realistically play solo piano versions (from current evidence) of 1,000 Oceans, Concertina, Bliss, Spring Haze, and I would assume Josephine. I guess she'll do 80s again with the backing tape, and Suede with a backing tape (as she did at Jools) - but the rest of the show must be something of a mystery... will we see a lot of Pink, Pele & Earthquakes, or will we get more Venus & Choirgirl either solo or with backing tapes [or backing programmed synth, I guess...] Incidentally, if anyone needs to contact me before tomorrow's show, please phone me, as I've got no 'net time now 'til Saturday. VENUS ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 12:40:01 -0700 From: "Eric" Subject: Richard's Boise Show Report Oops - sorry, I cut off my last post accidentally... This is what the last paragraph was supposed to be: [Tori choosing special locations and dates for allowing certain songs to surface] Yes, I remember well that Tori chose March 20, 1996, the first 'official' day of spring for the - at least as far as I know - first ever concert performance of 'In The Springtime Of His Voodoo' (the show on that day took place in Hamburg, Germany)... I missed this song on the Plugged tour and also this year, but I think that 'Springtime' might be a song that best worked just between Tori and Steve (Caton). It was brilliant just with the two of them and the interaction between piano and guitar. Although I would have been curious how a full band version would have looked like... I did a search on the Internet, and the European Food Culture Digest recommends the Tinto Pesquera Gran Reserva '90. They did not give a price for the wine, but another site sells the '91 vintage year at about $75 a pop. What a luxury, these two high-priced wines. Me? I'm a Corbett Canyon Merlot fan (as a delicious everyday kind of wine that tastes much more expensive than it is). Have you guys tried it? It's not too dry (can't stand dry wines), but it's not too sweet either. I gave Tori a bottle for her birthday, but next to her expensive tastes, she might have chucked it. hehe Then again, there are some not-so-expensive wines out there that are pretty damn good. In fact, those California grapes have been winning awards over the French ones these last few years. California has really come into its own, and we should be proud that the U.S. can turn out such fine products. Yay us! hehe Finally. - -jen ===== Sometimes I can hold my tongue sometimes not... - -"Honey", Tori Amos __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This is probably a different kind of 'purity', but maybe I can compare this to the shows of the Plugged tour in Europe last year? When Tori and the band just started to present the songs in their new dresses and when they were still in the phase of getting to know each other as musicians. I experienced these shows as more pure as the shows later that year in the U.S. when the songs had become musically richer and the interaction between the band members had become more intense. And when there was more room for improvisation and for adding personal notes to the songs. These developments are probably the reason for Tori saying that they would most likely choose recordings from the last weeks of the tour for the live part of the new album. It is amazing how different two shows even with similar setlists can be. You never know what you can expect when a show starts. Tomorrow's London show should be a spectacular example of that. I feel that this will be a historic show for Tori and hope to read lots of reports here... And, as some of the band members probably have other commitments, we might even see some more solo shows next year if Tori does concerts at all in 2000... - but that's pure speculation. > I know that someone had been requesting > Horses at the shows for a little while, but it was at this rodeo arena > where she chose to play it.
