Rather, it's about just as weighty a subject (if not more so): feeling repressed all your life. All through her life she's had adults tell her what she should think, how she should act, etc. She's had men and boyfriends treat her more as an object than as a person in her own right. SATY comes at the point where she finds her own voice and decides not to let anyone repress her any longer. The "$25 and a cracker" reference shows how little they have in their relationship except for their feelings; the "there" in "do you think that's enough to get us there" is the end goal of dating: love and marriage. She wonders (and rightly so) if their relationship has any substance to it. The point about "you better hope I bleed real soon" is a warning to a boyfriend that he might have to endure 18 years of unplanned parenthood and attachment as a result of his careless behavior. It's a warning that he needs to start evaluating their relationship in a more permanent and committed fashion; he needs to stop playing the field, to stop dating (or considering dating) others. At least, that's my take on it. Doug ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 16:33:53 EDT From: Solstice92@aol.com Subject: Re: Silent all these Years about abortion? I am perking up out of the misty cloud I have hidden behind to talk about the song "Mary". In one lyric Tori sings "and even the wind cries your name". (or something, I don't know off hand). I would *love* to know from which shows all the live tracks came. Is anyone keeping a list as folks figure this out? I assume various people with a lot of boots are looking into this. I actually asked Mark Hawley about this several weeks ago. I asked him if he could possibly come up with a list for me because I expected folks on the mailing lists would be comparing their bootlegs to the live Venus tracks and discussing it online ad nauseum, and frankly, I didn't want to hear it. His surprising response? "To be honest, we're not really sure." Amazing! Perhaps they did double-blind listening to pick the versions of songs they thought were the best ones, realizing that if they knew in advance which shows they were from, their feelings about how that particular shows had gone would color their selections for the album. Tori said at the end of the tour last year that she expected most of the tracks would be from the final three weeks of the tour, so that's a bit of help in narrowing these down. Anyhow, I honestly do want to know which shows all the songs are from. If I have to put up with endless discussion about it then so be it. Maybe folks on tori-boot would have better collective resources to figure this out. (I'm not subbed to tori-boot, so they may have all this information together already. I have no way of knowing.) My reply to Mark when he told me they weren't sure? "You guys are ALL crazy." I really want to know. Also, I want to send Mark a copy of the dates and tell him that it was figured out on the lists. :-) Thanks for any help on this. I never thought of that and now it seems obvious. I mean, here you have this magical, complex creature who gave up not only her voice but also all of her ties to the world she knew for the love of this man. And it caused her agony. In the story, walking on her legs was like walking on knives. So, was the bargain worth it? That really seems to relate to SATY. It's like how much do you have to give up? When is it too much? Her fins (fins that you'll never find??) weren't meant for jeans. They don't even have her name on them; they still have the shape of another. (i don't have the ones you suggested, but i will take a look at them) the only problem i have with using this type of book as a source is that a lot of times - not always- the authors of these books don't do thorough research, but instead make mythological claims without any real basis. the best example of this i know of is the book _another mother tongue_ where the author claims that the flower persephone saw was purple and therefore she was a lesbian. as far as i know narcissus don't even come in purple. anyway - i know tori has read the books i mentioned and for me this is what that line is saying. that her sexual organs are obscured. she was still healing from her rape at the time she wrote this and so that makes a lot of sense to me. catherine The Great Goddess Jolie wrote: > well, in every book i have (you all can check if you like. i believe the > best one to look it up in is The Modern Witches Spellbook it has a section > on symbolism)(i also think The Withces Guide to Faery Folk and A few books > on symbols in dreams) the mermaid is portryed as ultimate female power and > sexuality.
