I appreciate this, Joanne. Although I'd prefer not to be a topic of conversation, I see no way around it if I'm going to speak my mind on various topics. And as much as I enjoy talking with folks at the shows, before this tour began, I discussed with more than one person the idea of shaving and buying a wig so fewer people would recognize me. ;-) I have to say that some of my recent posts may have even gotten me into hot water with some of the regulars. I hope not. Although I don't feel entirely accepted by all of them (not that I'm uncomfortable with this), I like most of them, and even love some of them as if they were family, and I don't want to add to the amount of grief that they already get from everyone else. > The ONLY people who have a right to be at the front are the people who > are holding tickets!!! If you have a 25th row ticket - you belong in > the 25th row - no matter how short or how tall you are!!!! Being 5'2" > does not entitle you to go straight to the front row. I would agree that in a perfect world which always made total sense, this would seem entirely reasonable. The reality is, however, that Tori needs, expects, and arranges for people to come up close to the stage and stand there during the shows. (If people here need clear evidence of this I can provide it when I have time, but I'm hoping that folks will take my word on this for now.) And again, I never said that being short justifies rude behavior. I merely suggested it as a reason some folks might end up feeling a bit nutty over wanting to be right in front instead of in the fourth row. Trying to explain behavior is an entirely different thing than trying to justify it! Those concepts are not one in the same--not by a long shot. Anyhow, I would *love* it if the folks in the first rows would neatly and in an orderly fashion move up to the front and stand when the lights go out, keeping their respective positions to the stage all night long, but this is never, ever going to happen. I think this is one reason for Tori's penchant for General Admission shows. Everyone knows up front what the deal is down on the floor, and if they can't deal with it then they can stand back or sit up on the side. Lord knows I've been seated in the front row or rows enough times only to have a bunch of people come up and stand in front of *me*--including a couple times in the U.K. last year. Tori needs close faces, and she's going to get them no matter if the front row people end up being sixth row standing room--or, depending on the seating layout, ninth row. I also want to mention that although I told Mike Gray not to bother getting excellent seats for the shows he was going to buy on my behalf for the shows I was planning to attend last year in the U.K. (I told him that anything in the hall would be fine), I definitely do appreciate the times when I've been able to be close. That said, I also believe that there are different things to be learned from seeing the shows from various parts of the hall, and don't consider the show to be over when I can't be close. I was on the lawn a few times this tour, and even in the absolute back of it twice. Although I'm glad those weren't my only shows of the tour, I had experiences which were unique to my placement at those shows. I heard a dear story one of those times which I may relate when I have more time online. I may even make it home over the weekend and be able to get on my own computer, which at this point would certainly be a novelty. > My advice to those who are short - wear platforms!! This is a common practice among many of the shorter folks attending the shows. It sometimes makes for an interesting sight at the shows. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 18:23:38 GMT From: "Wake UpNeo" Subject: Spark.com 'review' I guess this review was at spark.com (thanks to who posted it): "Last week, white cheerleaders and other victims of sexual indignities temporarily put down their Jewel poetry, sketch books, and aromatherapy to purchase Tori Amos's new double CD, To Venus and Back." This whole slam disguised as a review had me thinking, W-T-F ? He mentions US supposedly writing him non sequiturs in some email he doesn't directly quote-- then says this ? What do cheerleaders (and he feels a need to specify white-- oddly enuf) and 'sexual indignities' have to do with each other necessarily ?! More to do with his own high school experience of being turned down by one, maybe ? For one thing-- are ANY of us cheerleaders ?! LOL. Also how many of us are into Jewel ? I can't say that I am, beyond perhaps seeing merit in a few of her songs. And, aromatherapy ? Does the word "clueless" mean anything to him I wonder... ? And he attacks Tori's musicianship and writing abilities with such nothings in his arsenal. He mentions Tori's music being a Rorshach-- that I can almost agree with-- sometimes it's abstract, but that doesn't mean it's banal. A Rorshach's depth depends upon THE PERSON SEEING IT. So what does this say about Mr. Reviewer ? Hmm. Nothin from nothin leaves nothin... He needs an ego check. Any hack with $30 a month can get a website. I'm new to this list, so I'm not sure what the protocall is here, but on the Kate Bush list, new people usually introduce themselves. In brief, I've been a Tori fan (ewf?) since 1992. I was intrigued by the Crucify video, purchased Little Earthquakes and was totally captivated. I got to see her perform in a small building on SUNY Albany campus, and I was blown away. I've always loved piano music, and her playing is wonderful, her voice... But you all know that, or you wouldn't be here. :) I've managed to see a show from each tour, except the Alannis one, which didn't come to Portland (OR) for some reason. I'm not fanatical about collecting singles, mainly due to lack of funds, because we all know Tori has great b-sides. I have one boot of a concert, and the cool thing is, it's one I was at! I'm used to ani difranco fans, who trade boots freely as ani says she doesn't mind (as long as you just trade, not sell). Has Tori come forward with an opinion? I'd be interested in getting a few more shows, if anyone wants to trade with a newbie. The show I have is from the Boys for Pele tour, with Caton. I also have lots of ani, some Kate Bush stuff, a couple Sarah McLachlan shows, and other random shows like Linda Perry, Liz Phair and a couple I'm forgetting. I just saw a Tori show October 6th, and it was wonderful!! She played a pretty long show, with three cool encores. I'm somewhat surprised that she didn't play more from the new album - she played several songs from UtP and BfP, a couple from LE and a few from Choirgirl Hotel (hope my shorthand is okay - I haven't observed enough to see if you all do it, too - that's how we abbreviate on the Kate list). She only played three from To Venus and Back, and one was during the last encore (1,000 oceans, without the band. wonderful!) Well, I think that's enough from me. Looking forward to getting to know you! We just sortof queued up in standard UK fashion, she stood somewhere, and we all did our one-on-one chat thing. Was great fun, as we all had as much time as we felt comfortable with, seemed about 5 minutes each or so. That was (nearly) in Cornwall, (actually Plymouth, Devon) back during the Plugged tour. Very heartening it was indeed, the way everyone got on together ("regs" and non "regs" alike). Lucy Bennett took pics for people, and it was all-around fun. It just made a snappier subject line than "I agree" ;o) I just wanted to agree with joanne who said: "The ONLY people who have a right to be at the front are the people who are holding tickets!!!  If you have a 25th row ticket - you belong in the 25th row - no matter how short or how tall you are!!!!" I know that Tori has invited people to stand by the stage before, cos I've heard it-- and I know it's overjoyed those who had crappy seats (to me tho for a Tori show there is no such thing *s*). But at one particular show-- ok it was general seating, but I'd stood for hours in line and some had just gotten there--I was SO exhausted, and SO glad when it was moved to a venue that had seats (and I ended up third row). But the whole floor seat area ended up standing for the entire show-- because anyone who wanted to, was allowed to stand in the pit. At the last minute. So I'm not really griping about that cos they were told it was okay. I'm just saying I know how it is, to have your seat, to be so glad to have it, to be exhausted or whatever, to want to SIT DOWN at least sometimes; then to *have* to stand the entire time cos four rows of people are blocking your way... They were only supposed to stay there for the first few songs but of course stayed the entire concert. I was so tired on my feet I almost blacked out. (that was an exhausting week of Tori appearances ! Since that I don't even see all the shows within one city). So if I'd paid forty dollars this tour for a front row seat (or bid hundreds for them on RAINN) or whatever it was other tours... (but it's more than the money it's the looking forward to having that seat right up til the concert)... & then people came down from the rafters and stood four people deep the entire time blocking my view (during encores maybe okay) I'd be so disappointed. It just seems... rude and unfair to stand right in front of people who are already seated. Not to mention some of us oldies can't stand that long ;o) (I can hear the flames now: "then get out of the rock concert !"). I'm blathering. In the bigger picture we're all lucky to even have such problem free lives to worry about things like *this*. Just wanted to agree with Joanne, no matter how curmudgeonly I might sound in doing so... I've stayed in my 'nosebleed' seat before too...except once, at encores (and then I was nearby to start), then I sat in a vacated seat with the guard's okay.
