And he came to my door and said, 'Come on, I have a private jet, let's go.' And he kinda did this flip of his hair, as if he expected me to just jump off with him, as if I didn't have plans of my own. As it happens, though, I did have other plans. So the moral of the story, boys, is: Maybe you should call first." This is not my personal discovery, it is rather, the result of some hard research of a girl whose name I have forgotten but she might still be on the list. "Cloud On My Tongue" is about Anthony Keedis (sp). The lead singer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It seems that he came on to Tori and she quickly realized he just wanted her as another one of his "trophies". It's not all that difficult to find references to him on the lyrics to the song. She says "thought I was over the bridge now" (One of RHCP's most famous songs is "Under The Bridge"). "I'll be wearing your tattoo". (he's tattooed all over) "Hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair". (he's well know for having long hair) I can't go further on this because... well, it's not my research and there are obviously more missing links in the song that I have forgotten. Perhaps the girl who made the wonderful discovery could explain this more? She ran this contest once... but it was a long time ago. I take no credit for this! Hehe. Hi guys, Tear in your Hand... I'm not relating to the whole Jesus take on this song, but who knows what's right. I just have to comment because this would be my fave tori song of all time. Anyway here's a lil' humble contribution. Song clip: All the world just stopped now...So you say you don't want to stay together anymore...Let me take a deep breath babe...If you need me, me and Neill be hanging out with the dream king...Neil says hi by the way.. Interpretation: He's breaking up with her...She's trying to cope and be calm about this...If he wants her he knows that she'll be with her friend (notice that it's a male friend ~jealousy) Neil Gaiman (author of Sandman Comics) Song clip: And I don't believe you're leaving cause me and Charles Manson like the same icecream...I think it's that girl and I think there's pieces of me you've never seen, maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well.... Interpretation: He has told her or implied that they are just too different for each other...She's compared to a serial killer meaning she's too weird or dangerous...This is just a lame excuse of his for leaving...She knows that he likes somebody else, but he just doesn't have the balls to come out and say it...She believes that his new love interest has nothing new to offer that isn't already in her...He just isn't looking at her closely enough... Song clip: All the world is all I am...The black of the blackest ocean...And that Tear in your Hand... Interepretation: She's very sad and her thoughts are clouded...She feels dark and low...He is crying (the tears are his) and this shows that he was most likely a very sensitive guy and still is..Which is why she still loves him and wants him back at this point.. Song clip: All the world is dangling, dangling for me darlin' you don't know the power you have with that tear in your hand. Interpretation: Her world is hanging by a thread and she knows it's all in his control... Song clip: Maybe? I ain't used to maybes..Smashing in a cold room..Cutting my hands up everytime I touch you..Maybe? Maybe it's time to wave goodbye now... Interpretation: He's vague about the future...I don't think he knows what he wants or should I say who he wants...This makes her angry..His indeciveness is enough to force her to say that perhaps she would be better off without him... Song clip: Caught a ride with the moon...I know you well...Well better than I used to..Daze all clouded in my mind in the haze of why we could've never been and you say "You know you're full of wish" and your "baby baby babies" I tell you, there's pieces of me you're never seen, maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen... Interpretation: She stays awake at night thinking of the past and of how they were together..She has begun to deal with the situation realizing she didn't know him as well as she does now...She begins to accept that maybe they weren't good for each other, they "never could've been" and that he was insensitive to her wishful and dreaming nature and used to call her baby way too much and at this time she's glad he never saw the deepest parts of her... So, I went to Palace in Wonderland and looked for the Tori EWF room. Guess what ? It wasn't there. Ack. So this is to say, if you haven't gone yet, don't go looking for that room. What I found out the hard way is, The Palace *deletes* all member-made rooms after one day ! Does it say that anywhere when you create the room ? Nooo not that I saw !! Sigh. Egg on face. I am not proficient enough to figure out how to create an entire Tori 'Palace'. Of course, that's not to say some other enterprising EWF couldn't do so ;o) A word of caution tho: there are jerks in Palace chat too. One item I really treasured and that I had wanted for so long, my Bose speakers, now aren't the same after stopping in a chatroom there. Some jerk sent out a (*very* *very* loud) ZAP sound, and I had my speaker volume up high to hear the voice "speech" chat. Now they hiss. My ears didn't like it much either... So, if you do chat, keep the speakers down low =( or just read the balloons. Well this is long enough... sorry for any inconvenience. Of course if you wanted, you could meet people there at a set time, and make a Tori room as needed. But it will be erased by The Palace the next day. =( K. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 20:29:48 -0700 From: "Ali" Subject: Re: 1000 Oceans video But she has also said she knows very little about computers. I went, admittedly, because I knew Eric Rosse had done the soundtrack for the film and that Tori was doing some vocals for the movie. What I wasn't prepared for was how beautiful and moving the film itself would be. "Hand of Fate" is a documentary about six psychics/mediums, but the point of the film is to help people realize that they have psychic and intuitive power within themselves. It studies each medium in turn: an Indian astrologer, a Canadian psychic (and former member of T'Pau), the Nechung Oracle, a British medium, a New York psychic to the stars, and a South African Zulu psychic. It's interesting how much each of these people has in common in terms of their stories -- how they struggled against their powers, and suffered ridicule because of them in some cases, but eventually came to accept it. (Hence the title of the film). The film was beautifully shot in black and white and color, using a number of different types of film to, as the director put it, put viewers into an altered state of consciousness so that the might begin to identify with and see themselves in the people on the screen. Tori's vocals played mainly over the segment on the British medium, and a song called "You & Me" played during the credits of the film. Afterwards, there was a Q&A with the director, Scott Morgan, and one person asked how he got Tori to do some of the music for the film. He said he knew Tori personally, and also Eric Rosse, and explained that Eric and Tori had been involved for many years. He joked that the relationship between Eric and Tori made it so Tori felt guilty and agreed to do some of the music, and the audience laughed. He also said that she has not seen the film, and recorded the music without having seen any of the footage from the film (it still fits together quite nicely). Further news: the soundtrack for the film will be available through the website at http://www.handoffate.com -- but the site itself is not scheduled to go online for "another three weeks or so," according to Scott Morgan. So it'll probably be around November 1. Anyway, if you get a chance, do go see this film -- and not just because Tori sings in it. :) Beth ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 12:48:49 -0500 From: Sara Hansen Subject: My own private review--L-O-N-G! Hey, kids! So here's the review I wrote of TVAB for my school newspaper. I realize it's not too deep, but I'm writing for high school kids here, many of whom have never even heard of Tori. Most of whom, in fact, are drug-addled KoRn kids who are likely to say "Shut the fuck up about Tori Spelling or whatever! I hate dyke music! Review the new Limp Bizkit!" But alas. I wished I could have analyzed more songs, but that's not exactly what reviewing is all about, is it? Anyway, I'm hoping (really really hoping) to get a full page, or at least a nearly-full page, with this. I'm begging to get two pictures in there, too. :o) Thanks to those of you who helped with this--those being Danny Weddup and only Danny Weddup. :oP And here I thought you guys loved me. But thanks, Danny, I used your word. :o) Here it is, and if you like Jewel... I'm truly sorry. In so many ways. *********************************************************** Tori Amos is the thinking person's Jewel. No, seriously. In modern music, Tori Amos is widely revered for her independence and her determination. When Atlantic Records didn't want to give her a record contract, claiming there were already one too many female singers on the market, she pushed until she got one. When she broke up with her longtime boyfriend and producer, she learned to produce her albums herself. She doesn't write radio-friendly hits. She writes the type of music that can only be appreciated by those who look inside themselves to find the meaning. Many who refuse to acknowledge their "dark sides" have trouble understanding where the music is coming from. But those who do get it have been helped immensely, as is proven by the droves of fans that wait in line for hours to catch a glimpse of Tori. A rape victim, Tori has founded RAINN--the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network--to help other victims. (See www.rainn.org for more information.) Tori's impact on her fans is indisputable. Tori's new album, to venus and back, was originally supposed to be a collection of live material from last year's Plugged '98 tour. Then it was going to be a double album of live material and collected b-sides--with maybe a few new songs. But the songs just kept coming, and the result is a full new studio album coupled with a disc of the live material. The first half of the album, titled Venus.Orbiting, consists of eleven brand-new songs. This album is her first recorded with a live band, and the difference is apparent. Guitar effects are used more, and the piano is less prominent than it has been on previous albums. The result is a darker album, with a more complicated sound. The album opener, Bliss, is alternately bleak and cheery, and it deals with the complex relationship Amos has with her father, the Reverend Edison Amos. She contemplates, "What it means to be/Made of you but not enough for you." Glory of the 80's, though it sounds more characteristic of Alanis Morissette, is fun, depicting the 80's as one decade-long party filled with celebrities and drug use. The delicate "Lust" sounds nothing like its title--only a drumbeat comes between Tori and her piano. As always, Tori's lyrics are cryptic and very difficult to analyze. The dark, sensuous "Suede" is a perfect example. "My absorption lines/They are frayed and I fear/My fear is greater than my faith/But I walk the missionary way," she intones. What? The fuzzy, effects laden "Riot Poof" takes its title from a direct translation of a Dutch slang word for a flamboyant gay male. This, however, does not exactly help one figure out the song's meaning. "In a bath of glitter and a tiny shiver/She crawls through your java sea," she sings. The sweet, sincere "Josephine" is written from the point of view of Napoleon Bonaparte speaking to his lover. The only possible problem with the album is the trippy, hypnotizing "Datura," which, at over nine minutes long, can get tedious. However, the simple and straightforward "1,000 Oceans" acts as a perfect album-closing ballad. The second disc, titled "Venus. Live. Still Orbiting." is breathtaking. Those who were lucky enough to catch a concert on her last tour will agree that it almost perfectly captures the energy and magic of Tori's live performance. The songs, taken from various dates on the tour, have been edited to sound like one continuous concert. It opens with the fierce and intense "Precious Things," in which Tori moans and wails about the atrocities of adolescence. When she growls, "With their nine inch nails and little fascist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrlllllll," at the song's climax, you can feel it in your inner core. Many of the songs on this disc were originally recorded when Tori played solo, or with only her guitar player, Steve Caton. They received a complete transformation to be played with her touring band, and most of the songs improved. "Cornflake Girl" is a masterpiece here, with Tori's piano acrobatics backed up with appropriate bass and drums that really fill out the song. The same goes for the bouncy, fun "Girl," which sounds heartier in this incarnation. One standout song is "Cooling," a heart-breaking song about the demise of a relationship that's never appeared on an album. When she sings, "Is your place in Heaven worth giving up these kisses?" you wonder who could ever dump her. Clearly, however, the masterpiece of the album is the song that most often was the pinnacle of the live show, "The Waitress." What was originally a short, intense song in which Tori examines her feelings of hatred for another woman has been transfigured into a ten-minute opus. It starts off fairly slowly, but gains momentum as Tori's animosity seems to grow. The song seethes and wails, with five minutes of new lyrics at the end until reaches its climax and abruptly stops. "The Waitress" is brilliant because it works on so many levels. The waitress, the restaurant, even the club sandwich are all symbols for things on a grander scale--situations in which two-faced women employ tricks and backstabbing to win favor. Tori doesn't want to hate the woman, but simply cannot help herself. Any girl who claims to not relate to this is either a liar or not human. It's a universal sentiment of shame at one's own cattiness. The imagery-laden "Purple People" serves as an ideal last song: it's cryptic, but beautiful, and adds the perfect denouement to an album that could all too easily just drop off. This album is an instant classic. It's a must for any Tori fan, from the casual listener to the rabidly obsessed. Most establishments sell it for roughly the price of a single album, so for those who have yet to be initiated, this would be a perfect start--the new songs, along with an anthology, of sorts, of older material. Listen at your own risk: you may find you're not the person you once thought you were. **************************************************************** What do you guys think? The 1000 oceans cd format is obviously much much cheaper to produce and IMHO works better than the enhanced cd jackie's strength which never played on my computer. The 1000 oceans one does ... so I would say that this time she was nicer to us internet fans since the last time sucked for me. It's all a matter of perspective, you see. << she is definitely plunging into new territory with online ventures, where other artists are not, but i doubt very seriously that she know what all that encopasses on the user end to make it float... >> well I'm sure someone close to her does ... like her hubbie ... audio engineers must be computer savvy :) kisses, joanne ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #305 *************************************
