At Irvine ? Hi; I was talking about Sunday Sept. 26, isn't that the day Squidgy mentioned seeing on E-bay that Tori supposedly announced to the arena that she's pregnant ? I was just saying I didn't hear her say that... and I quoted some things she *did* say, in case that's the part of the show people were talking about. I never saw any lawn seats; and I've been to Irvine more than once. It's an outdoor (but man-made, an amphitheater right ? like The Greek) arena... where are the lawn seats ? There is a blacktopped (and partly grass) lobby area where they sell food and souvenirs, but I haven't ever seen a lawn. Not saying you're wrong, just.... oh well whatever. The seating chart on ticketmaster.com doesn't show any lawn seating either. Nor did any lawn seats come up in buying tickets... I'm assuming you were there ? Anyway the most important part is the part where I was talking about what Tori actually said when she gestured up to that part of the arena, which is what people were asking about. Lawn seats or no lawn seats... H.G., I'm gonna ask you cos you were there too and it strikes me as the type of thing you might know. I don't think it shoud be such a big issue about whether Tori was raped or not. I don't think she would be thrilled about everyone discussing their opinions on the matter. Comes with a disc of live tracks recorded on last year's "Plugged" tour. What's it like? The piano is still centre stage here, but Amos has also experimented with heavy beats and electronic effects. This works magnificently on Bliss but elsewhere just clutters the songs. How many good tracks? 7 out of 11. Best track : 1,000 Oceans. Amos still enchants the most when she sings to a stripped down piano backing. Best line : As usual, most of the lyrics are incomprehensible, but a gem that springs out is Bliss's "And I wonder if you can bilocate / Is that wat I taste, your supernova juice?" Eh? Verdict : The Queen of Kook still rules, but should leave the dance flourishes to Mr Van Helden. *** out of ***** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 09:35:46 -0500 From: "pagina (spanish - \"pa-HEE-na\")" Subject: Re: Re:Houston Show... from what i have heard (and seen) she hasnt done post-show meet and greets at all this tour. i heard it was because it was just too tiring/hard on her and i agree. the after show greets are always way too hectic. besides that she had to meet with all the RAINN auction winners after the show too. wurmy - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Sunday, October 03, 1999 11:53 AM Subject: Re:Houston Show... > > Hi there, > > So was anyone at the after show meet and greet that didn't happen in > Houston? Thanks, whoever posted it to the list. It's a disgusting article though. Why don't these "journalists" (assuming it wasn't just someone who got a free website who wrote it) see that what they are really outlining, is their own failure ? Failure of imagination, failure of compassion, failure of insight, failure to not be threatened by talk of the shadow side; you name it, to me they've failed. I mean, I read this wildweb article just after reading a translation of a Dutch article on the Dent. The 'journalist' there, (or someone with a pad and pencil and an ax to grind ?) starts out okay but then at the end takes his little digs at Tori. Why do they do it ? Ok to be specific: The person who wrote the wildweb article, does he/she not realize that if Tori has talked about these (personal) things it's because she has been *asked* about them endlessly ? By 'journalists' too lazy (unless their editor has told them what to ask) to do a little background digging ? Or do they think Tori sits there and asks herself these questions ? They also overlook that Tori has exquisite manners and isn't about to say "sod off you're only the ten thousandth person to ask me that this week". Y'know ? She knows they are there to do their job, and her end of the gig is to answer their questions. She's always respectful and gracious to them, as far as I can tell or have heard: why can't they give just a smidgen of that back ? I mean, the guy at the end of the Dutch article says something about Tori flying up overhead and waving before heading off to a wormhole. Just because she talked about the unseen ! I mean-- why is that so threatening to some that they have to ridicule it ? Maybe they really really need to think our five senses are all and that's that. Maybe they don't wanna think about where we come from, where we're going or what the connections are in the meantime. But how about some simple human fucking consideration ?! I'm not gonna write to that wildweb guy tho. Why feed his ego with responses. Or give him that negative energy he's apparently looking for. Besides, his contentions are idiotic IMHO. Just not worth it. But wanted to share this with my fellow EWF... to see if anyone felt the same way. Hey guys, I just wanted to tell you all what I think about the new album. But I think I'm going to do it song-by-song because I might end up saying "great" and that would be it. Let's see how this turns out. BLISS: Had already heard it, but still it touches me with the same intensity as the first time. Her vocals are superb here, she gives me chills everytime she gets to the chorus. "So maybe we're a bliss of another kind" is one of the saddest lines I've heard in a while, and it is only enhanced by the feelings in her voice. I love this song, and, if compared to choirgirl, I think I do prefer it to "Spark". JUÁREZ: I thought this one was very strange in the beggining. I also thought her vocals were kind of drowned out by the synths and sounds, but now I think it is exactly the mood that Tori wanted to create, and besides, I have learned the lyrics already so I have no problem to understand what she says. My favorite part: "there's a time to keep it up, a time to keep it in, the Indian is told, the cowboy is his friend". Excellent track, perhaps strange in the beginning, but still excellent. Oh, and the "no angel came" is also a perfect line as an approach to the subject. CONCERTINA: This track stands out immediately: It is, like Mike Gray said, far more traditional and I love it for that. The effortless melody, the sweet sweet voice and the lyrics. Excellent choice for a single. I don't know why but it strikes me as to that, at least part of it is about her relationship with her fans on-stage, like she becomes "Concertina", and she's talking to her, her alter-ego. But I am surely way off-base here. Lovely lovely lovely! GLORY OF THE 80's: To the one who said (was it also you, Mike?) it resembled Alanis Morissette's "Front Row", I wholeheartedly agree. At least the first part. When she gets to the chorus ("and then when it all seemed clear..."), another example of effortless and gorgeous melody. Tori said on this french interview that these are the images she gets when she thinks of LA. I love this song, it is very catchy, but not overtly catchy, there's still a bit of the darker Tori in it, I would say. Good choice for a single. Great great song. LUST: Now this track is just absolutely gorgeous and sad, I absoultely melt when I hear this. I think I have a whole theory regarding what this one is about but I can tell you this (and this is what I think)... the last two verses "and he waits 'til she can give and he waits" has A LOT to do with the fact that she miscarried and is probably desperately wanting to get pregnant again. So she prays for lust in the marrigae bed and he waits, he waits, he waits. For me the song is broken down in three parts: LUST/LOVE/LUST. But not even like that do I think you can deliberately break them down. After all, for me true love cannot be conceived without lust. I was reading the lyrics and listening to it for the first time yesterday and I got a really weird image in my head, I might have gone psycho so don't blame me :). Semen slipping through the hole of the engagement ring. This song is just absolutely mesmerizing. SUEDE: I don't know why but when I first heard it I immediately thought of Kate Bush. I think it's because of the "peek-a-boo" (Kate Bush's "Hello Earth" and this song are the only songs where I've heard anyone using this word). But the relation to Kate Bush is not only because of the word... the mood of the song just seem to give me that feeling. I adore this track... one of the most haunting on the record. JOSEPHINE: Great start, the drums rolling... I love the "not tonight Josephine". I do not know much about this woman so I'm trying to read the interpretations you guys are submitting. I still do not see much meaning in it but that's due to my ignorance on the subject. Nice, subtle melody, lovely song. RIOT POOF: Funky! "Break the terror, break the terror, break the terror of the urban spell". It frankly makes me wanna dance... some excellent remixes could come out of this one. I heard this one is about Marcel's "coming out" but I think I'll have to analyze the lyrics a bit more to actually see something of that in here. Blossom... blossom riot poof. I love this one as well. Another great naugthy image is the one I get after I hear the "the sun is warming, my man is moistening" line. Oh boy. ;) DATURA: The beginning DOES sound like "God" and that impression is only re-affirmed by the backgroud talking (in "God" the biblical verses and here the names of these plants). This one is a bit scary. I thought up two theories when I first heard this: these "plants" are actually fairies, and Tori is asking Datura to get out of her garden. The other... that this is some kind of spell and the plants are ingredients. It gives me chills. I love it. SPRING HAZE: Another stand-out track, more traditional Tori. Lovely wording and voice here. Rich melody. Some amazing piano playing in here too. Have no idea what it means yet... I just think it's pretty. 1000 OCEANS: Sad, gorgeous, beautiful and heartfelt. I didn't want to get into the whole debate, I just adore this song. Best lines that I've discovered so far: "So maybe we're a bliss of another kind" BLISS "You know that I can breathe even when I cheat" JUÁREZ "I know the true lies in between the 1st and 40th drink" CONCERTINA "So she prays for [...] lust in the marriage bed and he waits 'til she can give and he waits" LUST "My fear is greater than my faith" SUEDE "Blossom, riot poof" and "The sun is warming, my man is moistening" RIOT POOF "Get out of my garden!" DATURA "why. does. it. always end up like this" SPRING HAZE "I'm aware what the rules are, but you know that I will run, you know that I will follow you" 1,000 OCEANS Other random thoughts: listening to this album makes me want to listen to choirgirl. Thinking about it, choirgirl does seem a bit like the little sister of venus. Venus takes you to another planer, whereas choirgirl is not as adventurous. I have a new-found excitement about choirgirl now... which is good because it is the album I listen to the least, "Under The Pink" being the most played. Choirgirl is amazing, I never did forget it, it just seemed to slip my mind whenever I wanted to listen to a Tori album. Finally a short note regarding the live album: I cannot express my happiness about this. It's just so amaaaaaaaaaazing!!! I don't have any bootlegs and the only live tracks I've heard are those found on the different singles (except for the UK Limited SATY and Crucify BOX, which I haven't been able to get yet), and even though those are uttely beautiful, this album is just perfect. The band is the perfect enhancement and it is supporting Tori, not drowning her out. I'm glad she included my favorite "Precious Things" which is a song I will probably never get tired of. Another perennial favorite, "Cornflake Girl" is excellent on this disc. I still can't believe this album is a reality. I'm glad she included some other EXCELLENT tracks that do not get the attention the should sometimes: "Girl" (perhaps the best live performance on the disc, IMHO), "Cloud On My Tongue" (sweet wording! gorgeous song, always a favorite), "Cooling" (it melts me and brings me to tears everytime) and "Sugar" (one of the most raved-about songs of the past tour, I hadn't heard such intensity in a performance in a long time). I'm also glad for the other tracks: Little Earthquakes (though I prefer he way she does this solo), "Space Dog" (a live rarity in itself), "Waitress" (powerful). I'm, however, kind of sad that she didn't include more tracks from Pele or Choirgirl, only one from each ("Mr. Zebra" & "Cruel"). I would have just LOVED to hear "Caught A Lite Sneeze", "Putting The Damage On", "Doughnut Song", "i i e e e", "Raspberry Swirl", "Liquid Diamonds" or "Playboy Mommy" on here. Same with "God". I can't believe she left it out! Hehe. But I guess we can't get everything we want. I also miss "Tear In Your Hand" greatly, since it's my favorite from LE right now (and has been for a loong time). Hopefully we will at least get that one, "God", CALS and "i i e e e" on the single releases. Oh, and "Landslide". I'm excited about the live performance of "Famous Blue Raincoat" that's gonna be on the "Glory Of The 80's" single... that song brings me to tears. And of course, can't wait to get the "Bliss" maxi and the "1000 Oceans" maxi too... but it will be awhile, especially since CDNOW doesn't even know when they're getting a stock re-fill. I'm lucky I could find the new album in a local record store, and even though it costed me much more than it would have if I had waited (I paid $27.50 as opossed to $17.50) and that I will probably have to wait more time to get the singles since now I have a major credit card debt, I'm happy. Tori makes me happy! I could have been crushed last saturday (personal problems), but getting the album lighted up my day totally and kept me from any menacing depression. I love this! Giovanni http://come.to/corncity P.S. Sorry this was so long. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 17:40:09 EST From: "Tha Shaigirl" Subject: A Tribute to Tori Amos CD? It's a little electrical gadget that can be used to play guitar instead of a guitar pick.. It creates a magnetic field that causes the string to vibrate, and the sound produced bears some resemblance to bowed strings. Like, say, a violin or such. -Miko ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 19:05:40 EDT From: "Sonya Harway" Subject: WHFS Passin' Through and Shannon Because of the number of people who responded to my previous messages once or twice and never followed up on this, I have three tapes left over. It is just the WHFS radio broadcast, but if you want something else on the other side, I can do that (Go see what I've got). http://home.collegeclub.com/sharway/toriboot.html If you tell me you want the tape and say you're going to send me a tape or $4, then please do. The whole reason I made the offer in the first place was b/c I had one extra, and now i've got three. Also, Shannon, who just sent me a check (her email is something like Life4ce@aol.com), please email me. I need a mailing address to mail your tape. love, sonya =Thank you for your squirrel= ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 19:56:01 EDT From: angel dust Subject: Re: Houston Show... wurmy well, there's a meet n greet scheduled here and there's that thing where you can sit and have tea with her beforehand too. i don't know if it's just something that she's doing here, or if she's done more and people on this list just didn't know..... like latex, fur and feathers: angel "if you haven't swallowed it, smoked it, or licked it, you suck!" --Tori Amos - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- from what i have heard (and seen) she hasnt done post-show meet and greets at all this tour. i heard it was because it was just too tiring/hard on her and i agree. the after show greets are always way too hectic. besides that she had to meet with all the RAINN auction winners after the show too. wurmy ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I don't think it shoud be such a big issue about whether Tori was raped or not. I don't think she would be thrilled about everyone discussing their opinions on the matter. Tori wrote the song to connect with all those people out there who have been in the same situaion and to make people think about the act of rape.....anyway, why can't we all just get along? :) ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I guess people will be sitting down and talking with her before the show, but I don't think she will be performing. The way you win is by identifying 3 Tori songs playing at the same time within 30 seconds. It's pretty easy to do, the hard part is getting through to the station :) They did it this morning at 8:25 am, but I don't know if it will always be at the same time. Tori will be here on Thursday, so there are only a few days left. Alex ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
