Well... in various ways. In the "Ask Courtney" section, Courtney Love gives advice sort of like Ann Landers. And she also gives movie and music recommendations to people. For a 39 year old woman who says she's bitter (missed job promotion), one of the music recommends from Courtney to her is, Tori Amos ! Then, there is a lot in the mag about Kevyn Aucoin (his career, his search for his birth parents). He's a makeup artist and often does Tori's makeup for appearances etc. She is in his hardback book about makeup. And she's in the article in this magazine where he gives makeup tips. There is an absolutely gorgeous photo of Tori and I mean she looks incredibly beautiful ! Along with what makeup he used. Also photos of Celine Dion and others. About Tori (or the makeup look ?) Kevyn says: "Tori's look is fresh, sexy and slightly dangerous". :o) "It's a candy face". Then, the magazine has a section where you phone in, and each call costs a couple of dollars and the money goes to a charity. Each celebrity in the photo layout is wearing a different fabulous dress. One person from among all the callers will win the dress in their own size. Jennie Garth is last in the layout and she has chosen RAINN for her charity. So, you could win her outfit (soft pink cashmere shell and shawl, over black jacquard Capri pants) (it's soft and pretty and practical !) in your size, all the while donating money to RAINN for each phone call ! Pretty cool huh. MARIE CLAIRE has gotta be my favorite "women's" magazine. Ok-- just my 2 cents on the question of Tori announcing to an arena of 15,000 people something so personal... Cos I was there. Now I did miss the first two songs, and was being seated during the third. So it's possible anything could've happened in that space of time; (altho I haven't heard of her speaking in that portion) so I waited to see what others said first. But since people think Tori announced being pregnant during that time she talked to the 'lawn seats' ? And gestured up to them ? Nope. I was sitting fairly close, and had no trouble hearing the spoken parts. What she said was something like, 'hi to all the people in the lawn seats' (that's actually a misnomer, there were nosebleed terrace seats but no lawn) and gestured up toward them. 'that's where I'd always end up sitting' and things along those lines. Oh-- and "all of you think I'm a size four. So, Hah !" I think she may have gestured toward her gown or shape at that point. Then later she did a bit of a Cornflake Girl dance-- for like, two seconds, then stopped at her water bottle, picked it up, swigged and sat back down. (if someone thought the 'pregnancy' gesture came then; it was just part of her dance) Tori was wearing a sort of togalike garment, but it was sheer when she stood up with the lights behind her ('catsuit' underneath). And she looked like she had a regular shape to me. BTW, this rumor surfaces every time Tori tours ! IMHO I kinda doubt a person who'd had a miscarriage already, would announce something like this to the whole world midconcert, hardly a personal setting, especially while still in the risky early stages (cos I saw nothing unusual in her shape !) (not that I was staring !) of gestation. That's if this is true at all. But again this surfaces every tour. In any case I certainly didn't hear anything even approaching a pregnancy announcement during the show. Joey ToriBoi@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Oct 1999 12:26:51 EDT From: ThreeDs@aol.com Subject: Tori in www.wildweb.com Off the Chart Why Kant Tori Just Shut Up and Play? By ELIOT WILDER / Tori Amos is truly out there, both in the sense of being highly unconventional as well as highly public. There isnâ^À^Ùt much she isnâ^À^Ùt willing to tell about her personal life. Much like actress Ashley Judd, whoâ^À^Ùs apparently very aware of her exceedingly high IQ and really wants everyone to know it, precocious Tori is perhaps also too forthcoming, supercilious and overly verbose. Who doesnâ^À^Ùt know that her song "Me and a Gun" is about her being raped? Who isnâ^À^Ùt aware that her album from last year, "From the Choirgirl Hotel," is about the despair and anguish she went through when she miscarried? Not that she shouldnâ^À^Ùt share such personal particulars. But nowadays, doing so seems more like a PR tool â^À^Ó which makes the whole tell-all act lack class. Wouldnâ^À^Ùt it be preferable to simply let her art speak to the pain? In other words, Iâ^À^Ùd like her much more if sheâ^À^Ùd just shut up and play. When Tori released her first proper album, 1991â^À^Ùs â^À^ÜLittle Earthquakesâ^À^Ý (she preceded that in 1987 with the forgettable, hair-metal record â^À^ÜY Kant Tori Readâ^À^Ý), she seemed to pick up the musical thread from Kate Bush, with dreamy songs drenched in piano-based soundscapes. The album sounded fresh, its lyrics direct and honest, its melodies pure and distinct. â^À^ÜEarthquakesâ^À^Ý brought Tori public notice and critical raves, but listening to it now, it sounds like the work of an unformed voice. That was to change with 1994â^À^Ùs â^À^ÜUnder the Pink,â^À^Ý which included the single â^À^ÜCornflake Girl.â^À^Ý Along with a stronger musical direction, the album lyrically executed a clearer, if more idiosyncratic, point of view. Much like the latter work of Henry James, the language of Tori â^À^Ó personal, peculiar, at times nearly opaque â^À^Ó has become more prominent in her subsequent work, addressing such difficult issues as guilt, ghosts and God (Tori, the daughter of a methodist preacher, grew up in a strict religious household and has striven to distance herself from her upbringing). The work itself has always been fascinating, growing more and more adventuresome, meditative and baroque â^À^Ó a risky move for a relatively mainstream artist. With â^À^ÜFrom the Choirgirl Hotelâ^À^Ý in 1998, Tori, a true virtuoso on piano, brought in a full band and adopted a heavier approach. She also colored her sound with samples, drum â^À^Ùnâ^À^Ù bass, industrial loops and wild orchestrations; she took what was in the air and made it her own. It was gripping stuff, but again, when Tori talked at length to the press about the difficulties that lead to the album, it took much of the shine off the material, coloring it with the specifics of her predicament. Not to diminish the pain she was in, but I couldnâ^À^Ùt help but wish she hadnâ^À^Ùt said so much about the miscarriage; that type of venting seems more suited to someone who gets on â^À^ÜOprahâ^À^Ý to sell a million copies of their latest thing by appealing to the publicâ^À^Ùs sympathy. Now comes â^À^Üto venus and back,â^À^Ý a half live, half studio album of new material that, according to Tori, came out of her quite quickly and unexpectedly (the record had originally been planned as merely a collection of live takes and B sides). This time the theme is passion, says Tori, and the album is thick with it. The words, quirky and abstruse, drip with peculiar and arousing images, as on the opener, â^À^ÜBlissâ^À^Ý: â^À^ÜFather, I killed my monkey/I let it out/taste the sweet of spring/wonder if I will wander out/test my tether to/see if Iâ^À^Ùm still free/from you.â^À^Ý Oddly, for someone who talks at length and in great detail about whatâ^À^Ùs on her mind, Toriâ^À^Ùs approach to her vocals has become increasingly muddy. Her marble-mouthed drawl renders her eccentric words nearly indistinct; her voice, ultimately, becomes one more atmospheric instrument on a CD rife with atmospherics. On tracks like â^À^ÜSuedeâ^À^Ý and â^À^ÜLust,â^À^Ý Tori employs all manner of electronica â^À^Ó evoking the aural equivalent of a wet dream. In â^À^ÜDatura,â^À^Ý Tori ticks off a litany of arcane plant names (â^À^Üpassion vine/texas sage/indigo spires salivaâ^À^Ý) that she commands to â^À^Üget out of my garden.â^À^Ý Somehow, the imagery evokes a sense of claustrophobia and sexuality. Throughout the album, the songs create an uneasy ambience, which is only broken on the final track, the straightforward and moving ballad â^À^Ü1000 Oceans.â^À^Ý Obviously, Tori Amos is a challenging and complex artist, one who has created her own unique language and symbols. Itâ^À^Ùs a shame then that she undermines her work with her insistence on overstatement in the media. Frankly, I think sheâ^À^Ùd be twice as convincing if she talked half as much. Out this week: Will Meredith Brooks prove sheâ^À^Ùs more than a just a bitch with â^À^ÜDeconstructionâ^À^Ý? Will Paula Cole continue her quest for missing cowboys with â^À^ÜAmenâ^À^Ý? Also out are records by two â^À^Ügirlâ^À^Ý bands -- Everything but the and Indigo. The former continues down its techno path with the ethereal â^À^ÜTemperamental,â^À^Ý while the latter piles on the guest stars (Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne and a member from Luscious Jackson) for â^À^ÜCome On Now Social.â^À^Ý The boys arenâ^À^Ùt left out, either, as Sting ushers in a â^À^ÜBrand New Dayâ^À^Ý and ZZ Top get racy with â^À^ÜXXX.â^À^Ý What do you think of Tori Amos? At the end you asked the readers to write to you on our thoughts on Tori. My question to you in regards to your article, is are you reviewing the person, personality, the celbrity, the artist, or the music. Your comments on her openess with the media on her very personal experiences, although relates to what is going on behind the music, does not directly speak of the music itself. Is your knowledge of music that small, or your ability to review the music so weak that you had to revert to discussing your dislike for her personal disclosures? Does talking about personal trials in life really bother you that much? Are you afraid of life? Many people strongly react to Tori's music in a positive or negative way. As for her openess, its okay that you dont like it, but keep in mind how much good it has done for thousands of women and men out that maybe have experienced similar pains. Why deny them the positive forces that she has brought to them, just because it makes a few people uncomfortable. So "y kant tori shut up?" you say and just play. well why cant you just close your ears and might I add, as a early childhood educator, there are nicer ways to express such sentiments, such as, "be quiet". I should hope that you take your own advice in the future and BE QUIET and think a bit before you express your ideas. From reading your article, it's very clear that you didn't because of the lack of discussion of the music and the emphasis on the person, and you seemed to miss the idea that many people have been touched in such a positive way by the very out-spokeness that you are condemning. This is America where I think free speech is still alive, so I say let Tori's voice be heard, and "We shall enjoy it As for those who find fault may silliness and sorrow take them"-SAPPHO. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~| The stars around _______ the beautiful moon ((_______)) keep hidden their glittering | | | | radiance, whenever in its | | | | fullness it shines upon | | | | the earth | | | | - -sappho | | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~| ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Oct 1999 21:33:19 EDT From: LizzyFW@aol.com Subject: Re: 1000 Oceans video I know it's hard for us Internet connected people to imagine, but doesn't Atlantic realize that not everyone has Internet access?
