I haven't heard the studio version, or the boots it's on either. I wrote: >The song is like a dream as if Napoleon (who *is* the narrator) And then, Pete wrote: >are you really really sure its him? from tori's intonation and the way it's >written in the booklet at the end it seems to me it's Josephine's voice >we're hearing telling us what he said: Well, the suggestion that it was Tori narrating, and not Napoleon, got me thinking (Precious Things? Educational? Who knew?) and I played the song right befure I went to sleep last night, so I could absorb it a bit subconsciously, and here's what I've come up with myself...and let's face it, who the hell knows what Tori's writing for sure anyway? ;) >even still you're calling me >"not tonight not tonight not tonight josephine" >now those quote marks are there in the lyric booklet, which says to me >Josephine is quoting what she's being told... that quote's often used as a >joke - that the most powerful man in europe had the most beautiful wife, >and he didn't have the will/inclination to make love to her. She has >beauty, elegance, importance and impotence - cause what does he give her? >"the only sound, moscow burning" and it seems (from the song?) she was no >Hilary >Clinton and didn't play any part, or have much interest, in his battle >plans (but that's just my guesswork of course) I do find a bit of beauty in that theory, but honestly, I'm not going to pay much attention to quotations, if only because punctuation in the lyric booklet is a schizophrenic thing to behold. Also, the last mention of her name is *not* in quotes. Also...this theory makes the song a bit one-sided, fully in Josephine's court, when I think there's a certain resignation on both of their parts. Josephine and Napoleon both carried on torrid affaris while they were married, yet were still connected in such a way that Napoleon having annulled their marriage eventually destroyed him emotionally. He rued the day he made that decision until he died. I said before that the phrase "not tonight" could be Josephine speaking to Napoleon, but I'm prone to believe now that it's Napoleon speaking to Josephine -- he will have no victory tonight. >OOOH - and feel hear that use of stereo at the intro - military drums are >over on the right, the soft piano following their beat way over on the >left - (him in moscow (the east) and her in Vienna >/Paris (to his west) ?) Oh my god, what a wonderful observation to make, though I don't know if it's intentional. Wow. And yes, Paris would be to the West, Moscow to the East. >"so a strange victory" - she won his hand in marriage (let's face it, he >was quite a catch), but he's off In The Last Extremity - her beauty >(vienna?) *her* definition of value meaning nothing to him with his >conquests and >campaigns - until the last when maybe he realises... has one of them died, >or is maybe dying, during this song? No, because the imagery is so incredibly immediate. Napoloeon is *in* Moscow as it's burning, so he's about ten or so years off from dying just yet. This song, I tend to believe, is *in the moment*. I sat down and thought about what the *hell* would I be thinking if I were the single most powerful man in the world, and suddenly, in the dead of a winter's day/night, I see all of my plans, dreams, and hopes scatter to the wind like so many ashes. Plus, Napoleon wooed Josephine, and it seems to me that he was incredibly passionate about her from the very start. Josephine had already been married before, so this was her second marriage, and truth be told, Napoleon wasn't the most dashing officer in the French army. But he was *smart*, and he had a future, and I think Josephine took note of that. In reading the letters, and the history, I get the impression that Napoleon's love for Josephine bordered on obsessive, while Josephine was merely his wife. This isn't to suggest she didn't *love* him, but she wasn't as intense in it as Napoleon was. These are simply *my* impressions, by the way. There's no way anyone could really know how Josephine felt. Also, I still stand by the fact that Vienna refers to Napoleon's Austrian Campaign, not Josephine's beauty. There's a strong military theme running throughout the song, and him being in Moscow as that very moment, lends me to believe that he's simply watching the beginning of his downfall. Vienna, however, *is* a beautiful, beautiful city. >i love the three meaning of Tuileries that have been posted > - a beautiful garden > - the place where they met These are the same places. The palace is known for its gardens, as far as I know. =) >QUESTION for you clever history types: the song talks about being "haunted" >and a "denouement" is the conclusion of a plot/plan (death? or is this >sexual?). So basically my question is: how did Napoleon and Josephine die? Josephine died many years after Napoleon, of natural causes, from what I can rememember. Scientists discovered recently that Napoleon, was poisoned gradually with arsenic while he was exiled. I remember when they first discovered this, and I was absolutely flabbergasted. Here's a man who was exiled from France -- actually, pretty much Europe, wasn't it? -- and living in almost complete seclusion on an island, and his enemies were still so afraid of him that they felt it necessary to poison him to death. Does anyone find this as fascinating as me? Just imagine the power this man held over people while creating his empire -- the fear he aroused in almost everyone around him. And he was this itty bitty little man! Hmmm...but Tori's taught us that ultra-charisma makes up for height, no? ;) Also, seeing as Napoleon is in Moscow when this song takes place, I believe "denoument" to be the beginning of the end for him, which he realizes, both in war and in love. (For the life of me I can't remember if this battle happened before or after he annulled the marriage to Josephine.) And you can simply be haunted by the memory of a person, or your own failings. I guess I don't buy that it's not Napoleon narrating for the simple reason that the absolutely breathtaking tone of regret in her voice shreds your insides to pieces. There's..."history" there. A particular energy that is incredibly intimate, and immediate, and achingly beautiful. It's a song that speaks of defeat on many, many levels, and I think if Tori had simply wanted to call down Josephine's energy for an excursion into a song, it wouldn't have been as powerful as this particular song is. Plus, it seems to me that it would be just like Tori to fill the shoes of a former French emperor. ;) And a quick note. A got a note from a girl named Ivy, who was forwarded my last email by her friend (hi, friend!), and she said something I agree with one hundred percent: wouldn't it be awesome for Tori to record Josephine entirely in French? Sigh. Hey! If you're going to any of the solo shows and can make it to a M&G, do me a favor and ask Tori about Josephine, and tell her to make a French version! ;) Thanks, and keep those interpretations coming! I have more info that might be relevant to Josephine. If this thread has worn out for you, I'm sorry. I find this song to be one of the more fascinating on TVAB. A friend and I were discussing this song and it inspired her to do some research. Here's what she turned up: Napolean was Josephine's second husband. She had two kids from the first, but still managed to win his hand. It seems that they were very much in love (someone on this list pointed out that he was still writing her love letters during his exile). However, Josephine had become infertile at some point. Now, every emperor wants an heir and Josephine couldnt' provide him with one. Despite their love, he divorced her, remarried, and had a son. This makes some of Tori's lyrics all the more poignant ("empty like la Tuilleries," "only not to be of use"). I wonder if this song in some ways concerns Tori's desire to be a mother entwined with her fear that she won't be able to have a child. Someone mentioned that Josephine cheated on Napolean. I have to ask where you found that out, because my friend's research never turned up that detail. Has Tori performed Josephine live yet? Where/when? Is there a boot? blue skies and fair winds, Tom PS---If anyone happens to be going to the Indigo Girls show in Asbury Park, NJ, drop me a line. We could meet up! It was extra special for me because I wrote her letter and asked her to play a song for me and she did. I was sobbing and couple of people looked at me but I don't care. I just wasn't expecting her to actually play it. So anyway, here's the setlist with little comments here and there: God-- I like this live version a lot. Father Lucifer--very energetic Past the Mission-- very beautiful Juarez-- Tori seemed extra happy to play this one. She put a lot of energy into it. Sugar-- wow :) Spring Haze-- I was very happy she played this one. It was wonderful. iieee-- wonderful as always. secretime Here. in my head-- This is the song I asked her to play. It was so extremely beautiful and I think the climax of the concert (actually the entire secretime was). The venue was completely silent during this one. I was very touched that she played it for me. Icicle-- I know someone requested this one too. It was very beautiful. She said "This one doesn't show up much." She also said it was "for the repressed people" or something like that and she said "The way I see it, if you haven't swallowed, smoked it, or licked it than you suck!" :) Landslide-- This one was very beautiful. :) the boys return: Suede-- yay! It was wonderful! Professional Widow-- This was so amazing. Wasn't expecting it. Space Dog-- I wasn't expecting this either. Very neat light show. Waitress-- Very energetic. Someone ran out on the stage twice and fixed (?) Matt's drumset I think, but I couldn't tell what he was doing. Encore 1: Precious Things-- I never get tired of hearing it. Beautiful. Hotel-- This one was a surprise too. Very cool live. Encore 2: Jackie's Strength (solo)-- Before she played it she said "This is for you." You know, JFK being shot here and all. This one brought me to tears, as did most of the show, but I usually skip this song. Very moving. Tear in Your Hand-- Surprise again. I love this with the band. Wonderful. Thank You-- Before this she said happy birthday to someone but I didn't catch the name. This was a wonderful closer. Very very beautiful. This show was just amazing and it seemed to last forever and ever. :) Okay well I guess I've said enough. :) in my head I found you there and running around, Charissa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 17:02:04 -0700 (PDT) From: "nicole m. labbe" Subject: Re: DALLAS SHOW - --- break the terror of the urban spell wrote: > i forget the title, but it's a country song > about still loving you if the sun refuses to shine aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh kill me now. nicole :-) ===== +::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+ nicole@torithoughts.org http://www.angelfire.com/md/gickie +::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+::+ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tori's music sure can be hard to read...and the FRAYED is a great play on AFRAID--and her fear is the expression of her humanity although some of us think that she is a goddess. "little sister youll forgive me someday"--indignant fans getting upset about something or other--shes with a band now, didnt bring the harpy on the tour, or what all--she cant please us all all of the time tho she may want to I want to write more on this song--so more later--I am completely mesmerized by this album and it speaks to me like songs havent since UtP.
