At the Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA last winter, Bob Dylan *opened* for Natalie Merchant. Nat was given a list of artists to perform with, Big Names for just a few weeks, in order to boost her tour sales. Same with Alanis and Tori. Alanis was told to choose someone and before she even got the list of performers, she asked that Tori be asked first if she were available *from interview VH1 Women First*. I prefer that Tori played first. The alanis fans appreciated the newly opened Pit when Tori was done. The Tori fans appriciated the lack of traffic jams as they left. I don't see a conflict here. Tori most definately is the "elite" of the two artists while Alanis is the "draw". imo, as always. Even better, Tori can play up to 70 minutes each and every night. I love the last line!!! _Da Hoppe_ EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW by MIKE GEE, Music Editor When Tori Amos presented her record company, Atlantic Records, with Boys For Pele, her 1996 off-the-wall, experimental, at times minimalist, brave adventure, grown publicists were seen to turn white in private. Nowhere was a song they could work with; nowhere was a hint of commercialism. Not that it made Boys For Pele a bad album but it was never going to give this extraordinary woman the success or recognition she was due. Instead it fostered and underscored the notion that Tori was well out-there and further out she was going. It also fell frustratingly short of being a masterpiece. There were so many good ideas, so many bright and brave things happening musically, yet it just didn't hang together. Something was missing. Not any more. To Venus And Back is the Tori Amos record the world has been waiting for. Quite simply, it is the masterpiece she's long been due to record. Not since Little Earthquakes has the Amos delivered such a coherent statement. But where that debut was sparse and dominated by some of the most personally soul-baring lyrics ever-committed to song this, her fourth solo album, has a rare warmth and passion that, at times, is absolutely breathtaking. I defy anybody to not be moved by the album closing (and second US single) 1,000 Oceans. A simple ballad set against gentle piano, hissing snares and a pulsing bass, Amos delivers the performance of her life, her voice almost breaking with the sheer emotion of the song. It's utterly mesmerising and one of the great ballads of any time. But what makes this album truly great is the even-ness of the performances: there's nothing here that doesn't work. And on To Venus And Back, Tori moves firmly into the late '90s embracing samples and technology without falling prey to cliche. Just as importantly she's finally got a band behind her that understands the special nuances of her songs and provides a peerless backdrop that allows to her sing her heart out. Tori Amos has come a long way; a spiritual quest for happiness and understanding that began with shedding those memories of rape, religion and her Methodist minister father that so burdened her, progressed through a slow embrace of her own sexuality and her relationship with men to this, the true maturing of the woman and the spirit within. The first lines of the album and Bliss (the first US single) say it all: "Father, I killed my monkey, I let it out today and touched the sweet of spring. Wonder, I will wonder ... see if I'm still free from you ... " Built on a simple piano refrain with a syndrum backdrop and her voice echoing in the background it bursts to life in the chorus and becomes progressively eerier through the verses. The ideal introduction. MORE TORI AMOS Late '96 interview with Tori. The cover picture for this feature from the October edition of Alternative Press - full size. And for everything Tori visit her home page.Let's take it track-by-track: Juarez: Opening on a post-trip hop, almost Portishead-style beat that's both heavily percussive and filled with all sorts of washes and tinkling piano, Juarez is a blinder and immediately confirms the massive step Amos has taken into the late '90s. Lamb fans will recognise the spirit of Gorecki here. Listen to the way the music falls away and then kicks back in on some off-kilter drum beats - and listen to her vocal performance; there aren't words to describe it -and the ending is divine. Concertina: Absolutely glorious pop, Concertina is dominated by one of the most memorable melodies Amos has ever written. The strings that wash the background, the perfect production that has the bass rolling through the mix, the guitar picking out of the right speaker and the drums pattering away underneath just adds to an iridescent shimmer of a song that'll have you reaching for the repeat button time and time again. And the sudden ending and tempo switch is perfect. Glory Of The '80s: The first Australian single loaded with shuffling percussion and what sounds like bagpipes amid a heavily swirling ethereal background. But really this is the sister song to Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi and confirms that Tori - as so many critics have mentioned over the years - is the heir apparent to Joni's immaculate throne. Really, there was never anybody else for it. There's a sense of street and urban life in this punchy mid-tempo strut. Tori spotters will spend time placing the last line reference to her taking a taxi from 1985. Lust: Fragile, piano-based echoing ballad that comes closer to her earlier work - particularly Little Earthquakes - than much of the album. The main piano line is beautiful in its simplicity as is the delicate guitar chording during the verses. Simple and pretty. Suede: Hook onto the opening. A post-industrial yet subtle rhythm over which Amos incants "Suede, suede, suede, you always felt like suede, there are days I feel your twin peakable hiding underneath your skin ... " Moody, broody and echoing in a vast space, Suede is a chillingly right and another blinder that never breaks into a chorus and never shifts out of the atmospherics until the sudden change towards the end. Josephine: Over a military drumbeat and some typical Amos piano she croons, "Not tonight Josephine" and then plays the words into something else. The reference point here is (I think) Napoleon and his Josephine and the ill-fated march on Moscow that changed the course of his career. Musically, it's a safe base for classic Tori fans. Riot Proof: "Break the terror, break the terror of the urban spell ..." It's tight, taut, funky, with a real tension that flows on a skipping kick beat and some technoish keyboards and pulses through four or five time changes without losing it's grip. Datura: The album epic at over eight minutes and broken into two distinct parts it begins with Amos demanding, "Hey, hey, get out of the garden." A mixed back vocal runs in the left speaker while Amos monotones and whispers endlessly in the right. The piano is almost manic before it breaks into a rock middle that carries another stunning melody before dropping a way to a synbeat and rolling back on the piano line. Drugged out and swirling, the first part is as addictive and deadly as the drug. Her vocal performance is quite astounding. Using static as link to part two, eerie, sampled beats slip in, space noises float over the top, the trip is out there, way out there, as Amos endlessly repeats what becomes almost a tantric chant before the drums drop in and punch the song along. Heavily religious and spiritual it'll have the post-Portishead crew looking over their shoulders. It ends on a radio signal. A tour de force. Spring Haze: "Well, I know it's just a spring haze but I don't like much the look of it." Simple, piano and vocal only introduction into a song with a strong traditional feel. Have a listen to her phrasing again. Clouds are the key here. The ending is mesmerising. And, of course, it ends with the wonderful 1,000 Oceans. To Venus And Back is a journey you'll want to take over and over again. A momentous and glorious trip that confirms Tori Amos as one of the great singer/songwriters of our time. Alanis Morissette will never be this good. They can have part of Alanis's set in place (or nearly in place) during Tori's show. Then they knock down Tori's stuff (which isn't that difficult, the biggest issue (based on what I saw at the shows I've been to) is moving the Bosey), and they put Alanis's in place. On the other hand, knocking down Alanis's set is a more extensive process. It would take much longer to get Alanis's stuff out of the way for Tori than the other way around. I honestly don't get why people are so upset over who goes first and who goes second. It's not a pissing contest. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 19:32:44 EDT From: "Terry Ferrell" Subject: Re: Do you guys think that we will be able to by the glory singles in the US, like as a imported cd like the UK verison of Spark? It is from the Toronto Sun. well, later, Taya Alanis, Tori are simply divine By ERROL NAZARETH -- Toronto Sun Sticking to the Godly theme -- mine, not the tour's -- Tori Amos, one of pop music's most challenging and quirky artists, opened her enthralling and memorable set with God, from her album, Under The Pink. Made perfect sense While digging the grand grooves pulsating from the speakers, it made perfect sense that either Amos or someone who's listened closely to her upcoming to venus and back -- skedded to arrive in stores Sept. 21 -- played Massive Attack before she arrived on stage. Much like the beloved British trip-hop pioneers, the music on to venus and back boasts a dark, moody, and bass-heavy vibe, and Amos premiered several tunes from the disc last night. She also dropped fan favourites like Cornflake Girl, Sugar, and Precious Things, alternating between playing piano and keyboard, and sometimes playing both at the same time. Amos, it must be noted, is a sight to see live. She often plays with her legs crossed, sitting perilously close to the edge of her chair, or writhing when delivering her cryptic lyrics with one of the sweetest voices in mainstream music.
