It just seems to me that this should be called "The Alanis Tour with special guest Tori (who? oh yeah, the cornflake girl) Amos". I've been to about 10 Tori shows since Boys for Pele, and I have to say that the two I've been to on this tour were the least satisfying for me. Dew Drop Inn was terrific, and the shows I went to last summer were completely magical. It just seemed to me that Tori wasn't with this 51/2 weeks tour, if that makes any sense. She just wasn't the same Tori on stage. When she played "Blood Roses" in Charlotte, I had to get up and go out to smoke and cry in the pouring rain. I felt that it was "butchered". I hate to say something that negative, but that's how I felt. Think about it, even in the lyrics of the new album, it's not the same Tori. Most of the lyrics are, I hate to say it, generic. It seems "forced" to me. It all seems forced. Remember, To Venus and Back was going to include Bsides and live stuff... then all of a sudden it was all new material? I don't care if Tori said that the new songs just kept coming... that's probably true... I don't know. It just rubs me the wrong way. Like Atlantic said "No, Tori. Give us new songs so that we can reach the mainstream Lilith Fair teenyboppers. And if you really want to make your old-school fans happy, yes, you can keep the live album. And when you get up on stage, try to behave. Keep the octaves down, okay? Just try to stay "studio" ." All I'm saying is that all of this, all of it, is very un-tori. The touring so soon after Plugged, the new album so soon after Choirgirl, the setlists being almost identical every night, heck, even the merchandise at the shows. Sure, Tori is entitled to her creative license, just like everyone else. The rock piano thing is great with me. I can actually hear alot of Tori's influences in the new songs... The Stones, Zeppelin... that's all beautiful, wonderful, marvelous. I just hope Atlantic hasn't whisked Tori away into the whirlwind of mariahcarey-marketing and commercialized blitzkrieg "radiofriendly" mainstream. I'm not sure what kind of deal she has with Atlantic, but record companies are full of b.s. and they have tons of tricks up their suitsleeves... and if she actually had the authority to say "screw you atlantic I'm not doing that" she'd have her own record label and wouldn't bother with "the man" anymore. this is merely my opinion. That's all. This is not about Tori, but the situation. She still reigns as my goddess. But I'm in metaphorical mourning... so try to understand that, okay hon? bye all, j ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #255 *************************************
