Bliss is a new song, which will be on Tori's new album (which comes out September 21) "To Venus and Back." Bliss has been released to radio, and will be released as a single on August 24. Also, Tori is touring with Alanis Morissette starting August 18, on a tour called the 5 1/2 Weeks Tour. A second song, "1,000 Oceans," will be released on September 7, it looks like. All sorts of questions, including this one, can be found in the Tori FAQ. You can check this out online at . To quote from the Tori FAQ: (Q) Is Tori's hair really that red? (A) Nope. Pictures of a younger Tori reveal she's actually a brunette. Tori used to use Clairol's Torrids "Torch Crimson" on her hair, but has supposedly changed dyes recently. In a chat on Yahoo, Tori seemed taken aback when a fan asked her what she used these days - she tartly suggested that they might want to tell her what cellulite cream to use next. - -*- end quote -*- Dying your hair depends on all sorts of things, including your original color, and whether or not you're willing to bleach it first [1]. If you want "Tori red", I'd highly suggest going to a professional and showing them a picture. They'll be able to assess your hair, and tell you exactly what's necessary to get your hair that color. You can't just use Tori's "formula" and expect it to turn out the exact same. /nad [1] I never thought I'd have to say this, but after talking to a couple of folks who do this kind of thing for a living: when I say "bleach it first", I'm not talking about dipping your head in a bottle of Clorox! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 09:03:50 -0500 From: Melissa Puckett Subject: Bliss Video -120 Minutes I caught the new Bliss video last night on 120 Minutes. The editing was a little too fast for my tastes, but it was enjoyable. I esspecially love the seen where Tori's squeezing the life out her a Tellitubby (I know I didn' t spell that right). I'm glad they did acknowledge the band. I was kind of afraid they might be unrecognized. But there they are, rocking along. I thought it was interesting how they had sequenced a few things so that an average viewer (not an EWF) would probably think she was performing it live. If you look carefully though, it's rather obvious. Well, someone please post a review of tonight's online show. I was floored when I read it and I couldn't wait to share it with all of you. Many thanks to Steve for sharing his views with me. Greetings To All List Members - I first encountered Caton when he and Tori were touring in 1996. I managed to catch two shows in the Paramount Theater in Seattle that year and my impression of seeing the two perform together reinforced my strong positive listening experiences with Amos's LE and UTP CDs. It was clear even back then, that Stephen has that special God-given talent that few guitarists possess. The mixture of natural talent, technical mastery of the instrument, and the ability to improvise seamlessly is quite rare. It's also refreshing to see that his personal desire to assemble a crew of similarly talented musicians and begin to cut his vision onto vinyl (well, ok...aluminum) is a result of dogged determinism. So few of us follow through with plans we set for ourselves! The Crash CD I received my copies of Binge's EP within just a few days of having placed the order through F.E.B. in Southern California. The CDs arrived VERY quickly. Whoever is processing the orders down there deserves credit for a very quick turn! The EP contains 3 songs; Crash, Shame, and Spirit in The Flesh. The music has its own melodic intensity and character. However, if I were asked to try to explain to a friend how this music comes across, I would describe it as melodic, dark, moody, industrial, and intensely fluid. Take elements of a violent Alan Parsons, Kraftwerk, and Pink Floyd; roll them together with the group's combined persona, and I think you may begin to understand how this music can envelope you and draw you in, taking you along on the wave of harmonic textures ; syncopated rhythms; and vocalized doorways. This is a CD, like Floyd's DarkSide of The Moon or Jarre's Oxygene ; that demands you listen intently. You feel compelled to draw the curtains, turn down the lights, and turn the music up loud. It leaves you wanting for more! I'm looking forward to a full length CD in the near future. I loved the use of the string quartet! Keep pushing the envelope, fellas!! I'm just now listening to a better recording of "1,000 Oceans" and I just noticed something: she is NOT singing "over single prarie hill," as it's listed on the Dent. She's singing "over Silbury Hill" which is a very different animal! Silbury Hill is a big manmade hill in Britain, not far from Avebury (yet another amazing, incredible place). It was used for purposes of worship, much in the same way the Glastonbury Tor was, but to something of a lesser extent. (Of course, now I've gone back to the Dent and noticed that someone else has already pointed this out -- but I haven't seen any mention of it here. :P) Silbury Hill is really a sight to behold. Mikewhy's got a photo of it up at the Dent, here: http://members.aye.net/~mikewhy/jpgs/tvab/SilburyHill.JPG. It's outlawed for people to climb on it, but how can you resist? When we saw in in March people were crawling all over it. The hill is HUGE. It's actually quite flat on top, also, which you can't really see in the picture. Here's a bit more info on the site: from http://www.crystalinks.com/sillsberry.html "Silbury Hill is the tallest man-made prehistoric mound in Europe. It is part of the complex of Neolithic monuments located just south of the village of Avebury in Wiltshire. It is a massive artificial mound with a flat top. It was built in three stages. The first began in 2600 BCE. The last phase comprised the building of six concentric steps or terraces of chalk which were then covered with chalk rubble, flints, gravel, and finally soil to form a cone-shaped mound." The terraces, also called lynchets, are used in spiritual work -- or were in ancient times -- as a kind of labyrinth. Mounds like this one and the Tor were meant to be climbed in a circular fashion; the spiral in which one walks leads one toward a spiritual center, and was believed to take one to a different spiritual realm entirely. There are many paths to the top -- today we most often, in metaphorical and literal terms, take the quick, straight path. But taking the spiral path (which is mirrored in the "Spiral Dance," which many pagans do during ritual to transport participants into another mental state. I've done it, and believe me, it works) leads one to another place entirely, which was the whole purpose of these hills, as far as geomancers are concerned. Silbury Hill is part of a larger framework of sites, which includes not only Avebury (which is said to be the womb center) and the Sanctuary (which is a smaller circle with a path running between it and Avebury -- the path is said to be a fallopian tube, and the sanctuary an ovary). Some of these other works, including their configuration, can be viewed here: http://witcombe.sbc.edu/EMSilbury.html My friend Sig Lonegren, who is a well-known geomancer, told me a lot more about the site than I can remember at this time. He runs a site called Mid-Atlantic Geomancy at http://www.geomancy.org which has all kinds of articles and information about places like this, especially in Southwest Britain. On the site, Diana Griffiths writes about Silbury Hill: http://www.geomancy.org/ezines/ezine_6/ezine63a.html "England is covered with stone circles each with their own Sunrise or Moonrise alignment to major turning points of the year indicating importance of that energy in that place at that time. At the Avebury megalithic complex in Southern England is a monumental map of a journey around the wheel where a site for each quarter and Cross quarter day of the annual cycle is represented. Ripeness and harvest yields the Lammas celebrations of the start of August at Silbury Hill, a mound the shape of the pregnant woman's belly ready to birth rising out of a gentle rolling landscape. When nature returns to the earth West Kennet Long Barrow with its five inner chambers offers the complete darkness and density of the mid-Winter point." It should also be mentioned that a number of crop circles tend to come up around these sites. The ones on the cover of the Led Zeppelin box set, for instance, were formed in this area. I cannot stress enough how magical a place this is, and how important sites like this are to Tori, judging from what she's said about them. (Look to her interview with Westwood One to hear more about her feelings on Stonehenge and Avebury). There are some photos available of various crop circles, including one with Silbury Hill in the photo, here: http://www.geomancy.org/sacred-crops/page-1.html http://www.geomancy.org/sacred-crops/page-3.html It's my sense, too, that Silbury Hill was also viewed as a portal. I've already talked about how walking up it in a spiral formation took people to another mental state. But the old Celts believed that mounds and hills were portals to other worlds entirely. Celtic mythology is rife with stories about people going to sleep on a mound and waking up to find that they're in the faery realm. There is also a ton of material relating these old mounds and alignments with UFO visitations -- but my sense is that UFO phenomena is really another version of faery lore. The stories are just too similar. All that having been said, I think it's incredibly meaningful that Tori has included this site in a song, one about love and loss -- when she says "I will follow you over Silbury Hill" it's almost like saying "I'd follow you to the underworld and back." Not literally (we could get into a long debate over how the otherworld/faery realm got TURNED INTO modern concepts of the underworld and Hell, but that's another topic for another day). It's a strong statement, and for me, makes the song itself that much stronger and more interesting. Beth - -- "And he gave her flowers in a lightning storm. They disappeared at night in green fields of silver corn. And sometime in July she just forgot that he was leaving. So when the fields were dying, she held onto his sleeves. She held onto his sleeves." Okay, so for those of you who didn't get to see it, it went: ^Õsomething I missed-- hopefully somebody will fill me in ^ÕGod ^ÕBliss ^Õshe talked about Clunky the Monkey; Marcel the nudist came on without his shirt on; she said she covers "like a virgin" but wouldn't do it (perhaps a future request?); she said her friend Natalie suggested the album title (anyone know anything about Natalie?); she sang 1 line from Glory of the 80s ^ÕHey Jupiter ^ÕMerman ^Õshe sang part of some Sarah song that she used to sing when she worked as a lounge singer; anyone know the name of the song and the original artist? ^Õsaid she admired Sylvia Plath and that her work changed her life; her favorite words are Toodles and Yummy and she hates the word Potty; she said she'd work in a vinyard if she wasn't singing; said 1,000 Oceans will have 2 videos, one for the Europeans with a lesbian kiss, and a tamer version for the Americans (drat) ^Õ1,000 Oceans ^ÕSugar ^ÕCornflake Girl (with a whole new Barry White-ish, very soulful intro) Question: does anyone have any closeup pix of Tori's sapphire ring or her wedding ring? Just curious. I never can get a good look at either. Question: who were they playing as pre-show music? There was a lovely version of the Tennessee Waltz. That'd make a good request when she comes to Nashville. I never thought of getting her to play that. - -jen _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
