So I'm up really late b/c I made the mistake of eating food w/ MSG and that makes my heart beat way too fast to sleep. [1] I was sitting in bed reading and had an epiphany of sorts. I was reading _the Antelope Wife_ by Louise Erdrich. I know Tori has read it b/c I saw that on Toriphoria. Anyway, I came upon a startling revelation. BTW, the things I'm telling about it occur in the first few pages so I'm not giving anything away. One of the storylines is this woman (Blue Prairie Woman) who has a baby. Her land is raided soon after and she has the baby strapped onto a dog, which runs away. Later on, she meets her daughter and her daughter asks what her given name was. Blue Prairie Woman tells her:the Other Side of the Earth. So the Other Side of the Earth is a lost daughter that was mourned after and searched for for years. This sounds a bit familiar. I don't know if Tori read tAW before or after FTCH, but the book is largely based on Ojiwaba myths. I thought you'd find that interesting. I think maybe we have different views on what mellow is. The beat, the sound.. it makes me think of... stuff I would hear in a lounge, at a club. LE is stuff I'd listen to on a sunny day, while trying to relax. Under the pink is what I listen to on a rainy day, and Boys for Pele is what I listen to anyday.. it's got a little of everything.. and like somebody said before, it's got new meanings to find all the time... it takes alot of thinking and wondering and it helps keep my mind open, you know what I mean? But with ftch.. I can listen.. and I don't have to think too much.. it gives me a mellow, calm, feeling. Of course, with Raspberry Swirl and such, I want to get up and dance, but it's... hard to explain what I mean. I don't mean it's entirely laid back, it's just not as ... hmm.. defining as the other albums. It's unique. I know your mother is a good one but poppy don't go - - Poppy is bleeding on the ground, shes trying to convince him to stay in the world and be with her... his dead mother in heaven may be wonderful but please stay here I'll take you home - - I'll take care of you Show me the things I've been missing, show me the ways I forgot to be speaking - -as the daughter of the czar she must have been lectured often in protocol, she's trying to say "I'll be good and do my lessons well if you come back" (so sad!!!) Show me the ways to get back to the garden - -probably one of her favorite resting spots on the grounds of the palace.. a heyday of beauty that she is senseing she will never be able to experience again (also an Eve reference, as if possibnly blaming her womanhood on his death..) Show me the ways to get around the getaround show me the ways to button up buttons that have forgotten they're buttons... well we can't have that forgetting that - -this seems to me like she's trying to avoid thinking about the terror before her and instead is focusing on her coat (which is in tatters).. a very childlike monologue here, where she is conversing with the coat and trying to remain proper even though she has just lost all status and sense of identity in one fell swoop... I also think this is the breaking point in the song, where she gets rescued by one of the soldiers and they begin to run to avoid her getting found and shot Girls, girls what have we done, what have we done to ourselves? - - we used to be so glorious and had so much dignity, now what am I? Driving onthe lines over clother lines but officer I saw the sign - -Theyre in such a hurry to leave they are driving poorly and get pulled over, trying to explain Thought I'd been thorough this is 1919 - -int he lyrics it says 1990.. which connects Tori to Ana nicely)... Counting tears of ten thousand men - -its as if she finds herself responsible or a symbol of the whole revoltution.. which hearkens back the the "garden" reference, the guilt of womanhood.. as if she couldn't protect them fromt hemselves I've gathered them all but my feet are slipping - -it's as if she is cradling these "tears" (probably mostly her own) but it is overwhelming her and she keeps slipping.. I always imagine the soldiers trudging along with her holding her hand and her slipping as she runs There's something we left on the windowsill there's soemthing we left... - - probably a stuffed animal or one of her presents... basically she is trying to reach back to the scene and hold on, but she is denied... We'll see how brave you are... we'll see how fast you'll be running We'll see how brave you are, Yes Anastasia - - The rescuer is giving her a pep talk And all your dollies have friends - -I can just imagine the one doll she managed to salvage being in her other hand.. he is trying to tell her she can trust him, tht he will take care of her and her dollies Thought she deserved no less than she'd give - -we're back to the birthday party (or remembering it).. this line always trips me out because it changes personage.. but I think either she's refering to a sister (now dead) or we are int he sisters mind for a second.. basically a catty sort of exchange about presents Oh happy birthday, her bloods on my hands - - Irony in the happy birthday, as if what a present! Her blood is all over m.. more guilt, because to have someone's blood on your hands is to be guilty of their murder (as in Pilate washing his hands of Jesus' murder) It's kind of a shame cause I did like that dress - - an odd little comment, probably made out of shock,, the dress is ruined by the blood.. more of her trying to hold on to the glorious past It's funny the things that you find in the rain, the things that you find, yeah.. - - Again,t his lends to the feet slipping imagery.. if it is raining as they run she is bound to slip. perhaps to divert her attention form the tragedy, she is watching the ground.. picking up a coin or a lost ribbon... In the malls, int he date-mines - -suddenly we are in present-day ...partially in a much older Anastasia's mind, partically, I think in Tori's (shje seems to be criticizing the coming of age rituals girls have to go through nowadays to become women).. Ana had to see her family get murdered and carted through the streets on the run from would-be assassins.. girls these days have to brave the malls.. the "date-mines" (what a great word!!) In that knot still in her hair - -loss of innocense, imperfection On the bus I'm on the way down, on the way down - - continues the feeling of being in transit throughout the song.. perhaps this is ana on the bus watching all the young girls (whih hearkens back to "Girls, girls, what have we done to ourselves".. as if we have lost our mystery and dignity... typical thing an older woman would say to the other generations) Sadder, though. I think she's on he bus to death... "down" sI don't think is hell per se.. but the transition is her death (which explains the visitation which Tori claims inspired the song) All the girls seem to be there - - she is finding her innocence and child in this transit We'll see how brave you are, we'll see how fast you'll be running - - dual meaning here... back to the moment of exodus, but also I think a comfort in her final transition. (I'm going to intersperse the lyrics formt he live version I have here just because I think they add so much more color) We'll see how fast I'll be running Hold my hand, hold my hand together we can go after this hold my hand, hold my hand You my pirate friend, I said... - - I love this section, it shows this toal connectiuon between ana and the rescuer, as if they are truly in this together Come along now little darlin come along now with me come along now little darlin we'll see how brave you are - - this last part is much lighter and less macabre, hinting that this new union will bring good things in spite of the tragedy.. also emphasises his commitment to staying with her through thick and thin... probably a pretty romanticised version of events,bu wonderful and exultant nonetheless :) I hope someone actually reads through this long babble! I also think this is the breaking point in the song, where she gets rescued by one of the soldiers and they begin to run to avoid her getting found and shot >> I loved your interpretation - it's like the other element in the song - there is the anastasia and then there is the tori - you interpreted Anastasia and I did Tori :) But about this part, about the buttons - there was an article in an old Take To the Sky about anastasia (I haven't been able to find this isssue lately or I wuold have mentioned it all sooner) and it said specifically that the buttons thing came from when Ana Anderson was found or whatever she was pretty messed up and had forgotten how to function - including how to button buttons. kisses, Joanne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 20:01:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: i'm trying not to move, it's just your ghost passing through Parul said: > My friend informed that Angie dated Frank Sinatra and he wasn't a > very good significant other. That's about all I know... I would be most hesitant to accept such a description of their relationship as completely accurate, let alone without folks understanding that in such a brief account, there is no context of the personal lives of people which clearly were entwined for nearly forty years. Angie Dickenson was on The Late Late Show With Tom Snyder last year after Frank died and she spoke about what a great guy he was, and how she had attended weekly poker games at his house until right up near the day he died. She had nary a negative word to say about him, and many glowing ones. This forum is clearly not the place to get into a lengthy discourse on their relationship (and I'm not qualified to do it anyway, since my love for Sinatra's records does not transfer into a strong interest in his personal life), but anyone seeking such information at a deeper level won't have much difficulty finding more if they look for it. I will strongly caution, though, that there were a lot of off-base rumors about Sinatra which seemed to become accepted as fact and not popularly questioned. To blithely discuss rumors of the lives of others as if one were a member of their inner circle of friends seems a popular activity, but I caution against the validity of such discussions beyond whatever voyeuristic "entertainment" value people may get from that kind of thing. Personally, I have strong doubts that Tori had Angie's relationship with Sinatra in mind when she wrote that line--no matter what the relationship really was or was perceived to have been. I think it's much more likely to relate to some of the television work she was doing in the seventies, and her resultant image.
