It was January '92 (I was like 12) and my sister's boyfriend let her borrow his LE tape. She played it everywhere she went. I, of course, thought my sister was the coolest person on Earth, so what she listened to... I listened to. But when I bought my own copy of LE, I started listing to it on my own, not because of it making me cool with my sister, but because it was the first album that I had really connected with. Like her music really made me think, even at that young of an age. Ever since then, I've been a fan or her & her music! *LIST FIVE OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS / ARTISTS OTHER THAN TORI: That's easy! I live in Oklahoma - it is hard to find the good shit here unless you REALLY go looking for it.) Five other favorites (in no particular order): Bjork PJ Harvey Ani DiFranco Smashing Pumpkins Throwing Muses Now, about the Boys for Pele drama. The first time I heard Pele I liked it, but it didn't hit me like LE and UtP did the first time I heard them. After I had BfP for about a year I went through I really serious breakup with a long time boyfriend. During that time, Pele really spoke to me. I identify with every song on that album since that time. It has slowly become my favorite - even though I hate to choose. I keep hoping that will happen for me with FtCH. The first time I heard it I loved it, but it has yet to bring me in the way the others have - which is odd since I have been through a miscarriage. The only song that really spoke to me about that, though, was Playboy Mommy. I liked the songs better when she performed them live on the Unplugged tour, but I still haven't connected with that album the way I'd like to. Anyway, enough rambling! They are all wonderful albums and we are lucky to have an artist like Tori around who offers something so different to such a diverse group of people. - --- XXXPandora@aol.com wrote: > > here's a little survey for you guys ... A woman has to realize that when she makes a man crawl it doesn't give her power. All it will do is make her puke eventually. Rather than say "all men are bastards" let's say "all men are infants, until they decide to be men." Calling them bastards is boring at this stage." - -Tori Amos ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 15:14:11 PDT From: Lauren DePhillips Subject: re: survey >What is your favorite Tori album? Visit http://www.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 22:44:05 EDT From: Cindy2Love@aol.com Subject: thoughts on cloud on my tongue Okay I got this a couple years ago off a wonderful Tori song interpretation site called Torimaniacs. I'd love to give credit to the person who wrote it, but I don't know who wrote it. Anyway I thought it was a great interpretation of the song so I saved it. "Well, to be honest I don't know a whole lot about the song. It's one of those songs that has me kind of stumped. First, I'll tell you the feeling I get from it. I get the feeling that she's been hurt by a failed relationship. The other person in the relationship has moved on to other people, but for some reason he has come back. She knows that she shouldn't let him in, but she's lonely and she really does want him back. Another possibility is that it is a new relationship, but she doesn't want to let him in because she knows he'll eventually leave her in the cold. So, he tries to get in the side door where she's more vulnerable. Or it could be just the letting go of an old lover that has moved onto someone new. To try and pin these feelings to specific lyrics is difficult. It's just the way it makes me feel, but I'll do my best. First she says 'Someone's knocking on my kitchen door.' The kitchen evokes several feelings for me. First, it's a place of warmth. People cook in the kitchen. It's usually warmer than the rest of the house. Secondly it's a familiar place. Families spend a lot of time in the kitchen. People who are familiar with each other spend a lot of time in the kitchen. She also uses it as if the kitchen door is a side entrance and not the front door. That implies that the person has already been there. The formality of a new relationship is gone. Or this is the place this person chooses to enter because she is more vulnerable at her side entrance. She may not be expecting to find him here so her guard is down. Then she says 'leave the wood outside' I think of wood being used for a fireplace. A way to heat the home. So it sounds like he's trying to warm her up. Perhaps he has hurt her and he's trying to win her back. Or she's been resisting his advances and he's brought 'wood' to try and warm her up to him. She follows that with 'all the girls are freezing cold' 'It's hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair' Maybe the guy's a player and she's not the only one who's been hurt by him. 'hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair' = difficulty in hiding a bad reputation. She may feel that she's just another in a long line of girls who have been hurt by him or that she will be hurt by him. She tells him to 'leave me with your Borneo I don't need much to keep me warm' I had a hard time with this because I couldn't figure out what she meant by 'Borneo.' I know that it is an island that lies in the South Pacific, but I felt there had to be another meaning. I thought that maybe it meant coat or blanket or something in another language. Or maybe that it was a brand name for a kind of coat in England (where she lives now). But then I looked up Borneo in the encyclopedia and I found something that made sense. The island of Borneo lies in the South Pacific and is covered mostly by dense jungles and rain forests. This means that it has an extremely hot and humid climate. Looking at it this way, that line in the lyrics becomes sarcastic. She's telling him that it doesn't take much to keep her warm so he should just leave her with his Borneo. In other words: It's going to take more than a fire in the heart to warm up to her. It seems to me that when she says 'don't stop now what you're doing, what you're doin my ugly one' that she is saying it in her head almost. It's like on the outside she is trying to resist but on the inside she's really melting. She says 'it won't be fair if I hate her, if I ate her.' I can only explain what that means to me through an analogy. In the last relationship I was in before I got married, I got burned pretty badly because the guy I was seeing was also seeing his ex-fiancee. I didn't know it. He lied to me about it for nearly a year. Even when he finally dumped me for her, he didn't tell me the truth about it. In fact, I learned the truth from her when we ended up at the same party together. I couldn't hate her for it because it wasn't her fault. It's easy to shift the blame away from the person we love onto the person they love, but that's not fair. It was not her responsibility to inform me about their relationship. She didn't even know me. And if he lied to me about it, what would keep him from lying to her about it? And even if she did know that he was in another relationship, can I really hate her for getting involved with him? No. By this time she has said 'you can go now' several times. This is her resisting him. Or perhaps she is just trying to let him go in her heart. She wants to release him. But the next line reveals 'you're already in there, I'll be wearing your tatoo' A tattoo is a permanent mark, maybe even a label. She'll be forever marked by this person. If this is an old relationship I feel that she's either saying that even though she's letting him go, she'll be his forever, or she's saying that he's marked her (damaged her) permanently. In a way I think the lines 'you're already in there' could symbolize that he's impregnated her. I know there is a Tori quote somewhere out there where she says exactly this. The lines 'got a cloud sleeping on my tongue, he goes, then it goes and kiss the violets as they're waking up' This is the part that says it's temporary. For one brief moment it's paradise. Ya know how love feels. It's like heaven on earth. It's a cloud sleeping on your tongue. Then the moment passes and he leaves and the feeling leaves and you're left with the emptiness of it being over. Finally the circles.... When you're suffering from the confusion of keeping someone out or letting someone go, that you really want to come in, you feel like you're turning in circles and you just don't know where you're going." Anyway this girl did a beautiful interpretation IMHO and that song is my favorite on UTP so I just wanted to share. Oh and I almost forgot. Here's a quote by the goddess (Tori that is) herself which I borrowed from a another wonderful site called Toriphoria and I think it just absolutely relates to this girls interpretation of the song. "I travel a lot around the world, and I went to all sorts of places, and I ran into different people. Borneo had something that I didn't have. It was a very free. hot, jungly place, and the people that, or a person that came from there, had something that I didn't have that I desperately wanted, which was no rigidity. When i say, 'Leave the wood outside, what, all the girls here are freezing cold, leave me with your Borneo.' Or don't leave me with your Borneo, because I've had it before, and that's why I need the wood, because it just - you can go now, you're already in there, whether it's pregnant or whether it's just infused. You don't even have to hang around and watch me disintegrate, because you've already done your job. You've already accomplished what you wanted, which was another scalp on your belt, and you did it. That's not one of my favorite men songs." ~ Tori Amos Well I love interpretation discussion. :-) *Cindy* ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #188 *************************************
