The word "cult" has many negative connotations, but it is Not a negative word. It is simply a "group or system of religious worship." And we are Not worshipping Tori Amos. You should also read Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie - I had to read it in my A.P. European History Class in 10th grade ... its a really really good book - there are thousands upon thousands of books written about the Romanovs, about Anastasia, about Anna ANderson (the lady who thought/claimed she was anastasia. As for the song I think that it uses Anastasia's story as a kind of metaphor or example for something that has a broader meaning. I have always felt from this song that it was a bigger purpose than telling ana's story ... I think its about life, love, loss and healing in general. This song is probably my favorite song ever so I have analyzed it like crazy - finding many many many meanings to every single line. Maybe I should do a line by line for you guys ... this will be my first one (usually I believe in finding your own meaning in a song, but here I think my interpretation will help others to find their own) Okay ... I feel that Yes, Anastasia is the last song on UTP for a reason, it is a healing song ... healing from all of the horrible things that we discovered that women can do throughout the rest of the album. I think that in it she is bonding or trying to bond with another woman that she feels very close to. But it is hard for her to let go of everything she has learned and experienced and sang about on UTP in regards to how mean women can be. I know what you want the magpies have come if you know me so well then tell me which hand I use Make them go make it go here she is with someone with whom she feels very close to (Anastasia's spirit, someone else) and she wants to get rid of something or some feeling she has (the magpies) ... I have a few different ideas on what the magpies are ... negative feelings, memories, other women that she doesn't feel close to or men ... my favorite is that they are men, especially since my boyfriend told me that he played a magpie in a play when he was in kindergarten - and I was like "yes, men are magpies!!" Saw her there in restaurant Poppy don't go I know your mother is a good one but Poppy don't go I'll take you home show me the things I've been missin show me the ways I forgot to be speaking show me the ways to get back to the garden show me the ways to get around the get around show me the ways to button up buttons that have forgotten they're buttons well we can't have the forgetting that girls girls what have we done to ourselves driving on the vine over clothes lines but officer I saw the sign thought I'd been through this in 1919 counting the tears of ten thousand men and gathered them all but my feet are slipping there's something we left on the windowsill there's something we left yes besides the obvious anastasia references (the buttons, 1919) I think that this is about she really wants to 'be' with this girl and she is remembering how to and remembering how it feels to be close to someone like this (because there is nothing like the feeling you get when you are with a really close girl-friend or sister) and she is trying to overcome her feelings that are associated with the knowledge and experiences of how cruel girls can be to each other. She is trying to open up again, but its hard because you become vulnerable and you might get hurt very badly. We'll see how brave you are we'll see how fast you'll be running we'll see how brave you are Is she brave enough to open herself up to this person? yes, Anastasia and all your dollies have friends Thought she deserved no less than she'd give well happy birthday her blood's on my hands it's kind of a shame because I did like that dress it's funny the things that you find in the rain the things that you find in the mall and in the date-mines in the knot still in her hair on the bus I'm on my way down all the girls seem to be there here there are typical childhood/teenager references to girly things (hair, birthday parties, the mall) she is remembering both the good times and the bad - remembering how it felt to be without the knowledge of UTP ... innocent, completely trusting of your girl-friends and trying to get that back. Come along now little darlin' come along now with me come along now little darlin' we'll see how brave you are here she is integrating that little girl and her view of things with her knowledge and experience to complete the healing process. She has realized that the only way that she can heal is to be both at the same time, feel both things at the same time. ok, I hope you enjoyed this ... and I hope it helps each of you to find your own meanings for the song :) kisses, joanne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 20:50:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Jennifer Mitts Cypres Subject: Musing/Hoping for Tori covers Hello you gorgeous EWFs, Wouldn't it be nice if we could possibly email Spivak Entertainment to request covers that she could practice for her live shows. Like if she picked one unique cover for each show, one suggested by an EWF. So she could have the request sheet before the tour started. Plus, what if we could email all these questions to Spivak that we keep bringing up on this list, because reporters NEVER ask the questions we want-- they always keep rehashing what we already know. Even on Fanatic, the girl is only getting to ask the obvious questions. Man, I am really getting bored with articles about Tori because hardly ANY of them say anything new about her. I completly agree with Joanne on this one. On a personal level BFP is Tori's most accesible work, lyrically speaking, the music especially the harpsichord is a little bit harder to grasp. But concerning lyrics and the overall tone are fairly easy to understand. BFP is about, *in general*, with many other underlying themes, the ending of a relationship. Most people have been through similar experiences and emotions. I find, with the exception of a few songs, I really don't relate the same way to the girls on Pele as I do the other albums. It is not that I find it obsruse or anything, i just don't connect with it in the same way. So, I think its a little harsh to say you're down on those people who don't get it. I think those who aren't as keen on Pele as they are Pink or LE are stupid or "don't get it," but they merely connect with the other ablums more. As far as the heart candy thing, hey jupitur, putting the damage on... these are some of the sweetest (though bitter-sweet) heart candy you can find. These songs don't, in my opinion, speak to our intellect, they speak to our hearts. Perhaps i'm being to simplistic in generalising the albums; i'm just throwing my two cents into the ring. Joanne continued... > First of all UTP is pop????? WHAT? Under the Pink is as > far from pop as Tori has ever been - it is the most introspective, complex, > metaphorical and surreal album she has ever made. And as for UTP being more > accessible, I have found it to be the least accessible (not for me but for > the general public) with the exception of Cornflake Girl. > here's Tori to back me up: LE is my favorite album simply because i connect with it the most, while BFP is my least favorite, oddly enough however some of my fav songs are on BFP. Anyway, I find UTP to be Tori's most challenging work, intellectually. She's thrown out some very interesting and controversial ideas. Even Cornflake Girl, the underlying aspects of that song, especailly after reading Possing the Secret of Joy, they just blow me away. Perhaps the reason i enjoy its themes so much is because she throws a lot of stones into the face of christianity which just shows my personal biases. I think it was 1994. I ran across the God single in a Walmart store if you can believe that, but I didn't buy it. I did, however, think Tori was beautiful and that raised my consciousness level a bit, of her. I was probably 11 at the time, and still quite religious because I thought I had to be in order to survive. So I figured this song, God, was blasphemous. I saw Tori on some kids' TV show, maybe Name Your Adventure and wanted to be really into her. I can't remember which song made me change my mind, decide she wasn't sinful, only truthful. But I never bought any of her stuff (rather, never had my parents buy any of her stuff for me). In 1996, when I started making my own money, I bought Boys for Pele as my first "album experience". I've got a question and a thought to share tonight. First, there's this one old classic rock song that I thought might have influenced Butterfly. It has a part about a pretty garden. It could be Led Zepp, but I could be wrong. :) If anybody knows what I'm talking about, please speak up. "Mary" and "Hey Jude" also have similar "na na na na's", imho. Today I was reading _Hideous Kinky_ by Esther Freud. (Yes, that's now a movie w/ Kate Winslet, but the book is pretty good, I think.) They mentioned eating "blood oranges you could suck the insides out of through a tiny hole in the skin." I might get graphic so I'm putting in a small spoiler space. I'd assumed "blood roses" was referring to the colour, but this analogy makes sense to me. A rose is often a female metaphor. And I know this makes absolutely no sense, but I'd always thought of BR as being an "orange" song. It just seems orange, I say!!! Anyhoo, I think what she could be saying is that women are dehumanized and emptied out so easily through their vaginas (think FGM, Possessing the Secret of Joy, along that vein...) I haven't thought enough to tie in the lyrics precisely. But the blood here is literal. When a woman is circumcised, there is blood. Tori has used "diamond" to mean "blood" on several occasions, iirc. (you gave him your blood & your warm little diamond) speaking of FGM (female genital mutilation), it's taken so normally in some places that a person can do that to you and be respected, be "back on the streets again." Either for a mutilation that is (tragically) legal and recommended, or for a rape. It's getting late so I'm out of thoughts there...Take care of yourselves, kids.
