I think we need to set up a webpage (mikewhy??) about Tori and Trent just to refer everyone to when they ask questions about trent and tori. :) Trent did backup vocals on Past the Mission. No, they never dated ... they have always just been good friends. I always thought they would make a cute couple though :) but Mark is a great guy. As far as we know, none of the songs on BFP are directly and totally about trent - a lot of them are simply about men in general (obviously trent would be included in that category) some are about her ex-boyfriend Eric Rosse and I'm sure some are about other ex-boyfriends and such. kisses, joanne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 22:51:12 EDT From: KAPS72@aol.com Subject: Re: rabbit, the golden gun and overanalyzing lyrics I agree with Cindy that everything Tori writes has meaning of some kind. Some of it may just be poetic, but considering a song only lasts about 4 or 5 minutes, Tori is not the sort of artist who fills her songs with meaningless dialogue. On one of my interview discs, I have heard her saying that when she sings her songs she is having a conversation with the listeners. She is trying to make a point. Anyway, isn't it fun to look at her work? There are a lot of us here asking questions, so I can see how some people may construe this as overanalyzing. But I enjoy Tori's messages very much. Through all these "conversations" we've had, I feel as though she understands so much of my life in so many ways. I wanted to point something out to all of you that I noticed yesterday. My best friend purchased her copy of BFP when it first came out. I just recently purchased my copy through a club and I noticed that my friends' copy has the original version of "Talula" on it, whereas mine has "Talula (The Tornado Mix)" only, yet has the lyrics for the original version in the liner notes. Has anyone else noticed this, and does anyone know why? I checked the copies they had in Strawberries and found that they all had the Tornado Mix version on them. I was wondering if Tori liked the new version better and replaced it.??? Well, i'm gonna stick with my interp (for myself) that Rabbit's a real life friend of Tori's. He is dreams. He was never a contender, nor did he ever >want >to be. He is someone who you know; he is just someone who... This was interesting, that Tori didn't explicitly say he is inspired by the James Bond character "The Man with the Golden Gun". Maybe she wanted it to symbolize something bigger than just one chauvinist; is this how the quote ends tho ? I wanted to see the rest of the sentence =) Sounds like she might be saying here that he represents the dreamy guy who is also dangerous if you put your dreams onto him (the 'boy blood' replacing one's own growth, again) ? ::Shrug:: And someone said that 'over analyzing' Tori's lyrics is wrong. Obviously i don't think so. I mean to each their own. But to me the songs are more than pretty sounds. They're something i can listen to and each time something new or some new meaning flashes like a bit of glass in a stream i'm crossing; one i didn't notice when i crossed it before ;o) And i don't think there's anything wrong with that; or in some of us posting what *we* see, for others on the list who are into that also; the rest of you can after all, use the scroll function ;o) if you are so inclined. But i have a hard time believing we're not 'supposed' to look for meaning in Tori's songs or that there is none there ? If that's what is being implied. I have a hard time believing that it's just a form of Muzak and trying to maybe think about our own lives and the different meanings and interpretations and implications found in the lyrics, aren't to be explored. Like Alice in Wonderland, i see Tori's lyrics as little gems of wisdom labeled "taste me" "drink me" and so on =) and we just might grow as a result. Ok i think i'm out of silly metaphors for today.... K. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Interviewer : Who are some of the musicians you've come to think of as friends? Trent Reznor : An odd bunch of people. I think the guys from Pantera are cool. Everyone from Tommy Lee of Motley Crue to Adrian Belew. I met the guys in the band Live because we were playing at festivals in Australia. All of them are people I wouldn't hesitate to say, let's work on something. Interviewer : Like you did with Tori Amos? Trent Reznor : Tori would be another example. She called me to do this vocal track. It wasn't that big a deal. Her first album was permanently in my car's CD changer. It really struck me as well written, in a similar vein to what I was doing - from a different point of view, but the same kind of addicting, pouring out, gushing, baring naked kind of song. Other people put their fingers in the pie, and they kind of messed up a friendship. We're not that close now. Some malicious meddling on the part of Courtney Love. But I still feel the same feelings for Tori. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The song was "Past the Mission" that he did vocals on. I think in the interview Tea with the Waitress Tori talks a little bit about how the song asked her if Trent Reznor could be on it. It's cute. I believe they were just friends and they never dated. Tori came over to the Sharon Tate house where he live/s/d and attempted to cook him a chicken, but when she checked on the chicken it was still raw and she said that the spirits in the house weren't allowing it to cook. I have been working in the school system for the past three years and I only found one Tori fan. All of my student that I have counsel (about 300) has never heard of Tori Amos. Now, I don't sit around asking students if they like Tori, but I do leave my Tori's CDS on top of my desk. Usually, the students would say, "Who is Tori Amos?" And then I would tell the young child about Tori Amos. I've been doing this for three years and found no one who like or even know who she is. But one day last week (6-2-99), a student came in my office and said these magic words, "YOU LIKE TORI AMOS, SO DO I." I said what any counselor would say in this situation "Cool." I want to know, since majority of today teenagers listen to Hip-Hop, how many Tori Amos fans (on this list) are nineteen and under and how many Tori Amos fans (any age) are the only Tori fan in there group of friends. Peace, Love and Lollipops. Len ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 20:08:06 -0500 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: ToriCon reminder! Remember, folks, if you're planning to attend ToriCon this year, your registration form is due in less than a week, and your registration fees are due the week after that. For the ToriCon FAQ, which includes the registration form, email and ask nicely. What is ToriCon? ToriCon is the annual gathering of EWF from rec.music.tori-amos. All proceeds from ToriCon go to RAINN. This year's Con {the fourth one we've had} is being held in Portland, Oregon, on the first weekend in August. Everyone is invited to attend. Most of the time at ToriCon is unstructured, to allow folks to get to know each other. There is a Saturday afternoon activity {which will be voted on by the attendees}, and a dinner/dance Saturday night. Beyond that, you're free to get to know everyone. Also, there is an auction being held in conjunction with the Con, with 100% of the proceeds to RAINN. This auction is open to the general public, and there'll be a webpage up with a listing of the items available. Again, - -ALL- proceeds from this go to RAINN. This year, there are some - -incredible- items on the auction table, including one of -THE- most collectible and hard-to-find Tori items in existence. {But I ain't gonna tell you what it is. You'll just have to wait for the official auction announcement. :P } The auction folks are definitely looking for more items to auction, though: the more we get for RAINN, the better. :) If you're interested in donating anything {Tori-related or not}, email me and I'll get you in touch with the auction organizer. If you're interested in more information about ToriCon, email for the FAQ. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 00:19:05 -0400 From: Super Chick Subject: Re: more on Cornflake Girl It was actually attributed to "Bumper Sticker". Every time I hear any bit of fluffy pop song by a woman, there is always some bit of anti-female sentiment behind it. Cases in point: For some unearthly reason, I was watching Total Request Live today, and that Jennifer Lopez song came on. I'm sure most of you have seen the video...random "regular" people watching Lopez via her Internet TV site (how 90s pop culture is that??) with guys drooling over her and one fat little girl trying to dance like her. Well, l hadnt noticed it before, but there are two young women watching her also, and they are making the "L-for-Loser" sign at her with their hands and pushing their boyfriends away when they try to get a glimpse. Also, the other day I heard a song, I think it was called "Where My Girls At" or some other travesty of the English language...the entire song seemed to point a finger at the female species for being man-stealing sluts. And dont even get me started on the bitchiness that takes place on Ally McBeal. What is all this?? Cornflake Girl's meaning didnt really strike too much of a chord with me until recently, when I began to notice this whole women-against-women thread in the entertainment industry, and add to that the cattiness that goes on in my workplace. (Once again, just the women). I'm sure that the rest of you can think of plenty of other examples, but these are just the ones that have bothered me recently. Sorry, but there's nowhere else I can go to get this off my chest :) Thanks for listening to me whine, Cheers, Natalie AOL Instant Message SoCenRain "give me life give me pain give me myself again" ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. You can find bootlegs at small, independent music stores; you'll never find 'em at a big place like Tower, Virgin, Best Buy, etc. Look around, ask for "imports". Check out the Tori Bootleg Discography before you purchase a boot! There are bootlegs with poor sound quality. They also often make errors on the liner notes, getting song titles wrong, saying there are songs on there that aren't, or missing songs that -are- on there. The Bootleg Discography is at . If you're really interested in bootlegs, you might want to subscribe to the Tori-boot mailing list. You'll find lots of people there who will make you copies of tapes (or even CDs) for the cost of the tape/CD and shipping (and perhaps a small donation to RAINN). Information on how to subscribe to that list is available in the Tori Resources FAQ, which you can get by emailing and asking nicely. I personally help folks out with bootlegs for the cost of the tape and shipping (or the cost of the CD, shipping, and a small donation to RAINN). If you're interested in this, check out my list at .
