It's not an ACTUAL backstage pass to the concerts.. it's a 'virtual' backstage pass giving you access to the stuff (pictures, sounds, etc) that they're going to be putting up on the website throughout the tour. :) So don't get too excited... it's not a free backstage pass to the concerts.. just a virtual one. Actually, no. ;) I haven't heard of Tori being paralleled with anyone but Delerium, although I do see more of Tori in Death than anyone else....I wonder why that doesn't come up that much? Anyways, Sandman was well-established in character and run before Tori gave Neil the now-famous demo with Tear In Your Hand on it. She was a fan of his, and he subsequently became a fan of hers. I think maybe Neil played up some of Delerium's atrributes a few times to reflect what he saw in tori, but I don't read any more into it than that. The only time Neil has blatantly put Tori in one of his books is the tree in Stardust. >Sandman has 7 brothers/sisters, all with names that start with D. There is >Death, Delirium, Dream, Desire, Destruction, >Despair, and Destiny. And just for those who aren't familiar with Sandman, here's a bit more. The age order is Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delerium. (Or is Destruction the second youngest? I can't remember off the top of my head right now. Wait -- let me go look real quick...) Yeah, I think that's right -- someone correct me if I'm wrong. To make a long story short, Desire and Despair are twins, Destruction left the Endless centuries before because man had more or less taken over his job, and Delerium used to be Delight, which brings me to the next point... >Originally, Delerium was a tori-ish figure, but she got killed off, and >subsequently became Death. The main similarities are teh visual likenesses, >as well as some of Death's idiosyncracies. Whoa -- I think you're a bit confused, Josh. ;) Delerium and Death are sisters, and never were the same person. I think you're confusing Delerium being Delight. Delight basically lost it and became Delerium. Death had nothing to do with it. Death is probably the most popular Endless (next to Dream, but that's debatable), and she's a whole other enchilada. If there's one reason to get Death: The High Cost of Living, it's for the condom PSA at the end -- it's priceless. John Constantine holding a banana as Death waxes all safe sex-like. Brilliantly done, as is the actual novel itself. Anyways -- if you haven't read The Sandman series, please remedy this! It's heartbreakingly gorgeous. You will NOT be sorry, and I think it's a bit more magical than Neverwhere or Stardust, Neil's two novels. Also, Smoke and Mirrors, a collection of Neil's short work, is a must-have, espcially if you're new to Neil. It includes the legendary "Snow, Glass, Apples" and "Nicholas Was..." which you HAVE to see to believe. Here's a good Gaiman site. Check it out: The Dreaming http://www.holycow.com/dreaming I think that's it. If it's wrong, I'll check my bookmarks and get the right URL. Or just search for it. It's the best Gaiman site out there. Also, not only is Neil Gaiman a beautiful man in that slept-in, sloppy sort of way (hey -- writers are always incredibly sexy without even trying), he has one of the most amazing voices. Get his CD Warning: Contains Language. It's his spoken word work, and the way he reads "Cold Colours" will make you CREAM. ;) Have a good night, and I hope some of this helps! Actually, I'm really dubious (at least in the near future) that this sort of thing will work as flawlessly as the in-place ticketmaster system. Note, I don't advocate TM's high prices, but not counting online sales, their system is AFAIK pretty rock solid. The main problem we saw with this entire fiasco was that the people involved couldn't get their acts together. Ticketmaster doesn't have the bandwidth, mp3.com could get the site updated and stable. Plus, there was a complete and utter lack of information. I realize just how complicated it is to coordinate an event of such magnitude, but I think it was utterly foolish to attempt to sell ALL of the venues at once. Perhaps they'll learn from their mistake and upgrade their systems. Perhaps they'll all get their act together and have all the venues correctly set up so that some venues (i.e. Tampa FL) *WON'T* say they're going on sale at ALL TM outlets the same day they go onsale online-only. A great experiment, yes? I just wish I didn't have to be the guinea pig. By the way, there really is something to be said for waiting in line at the venue, for tickets or admission. First, the hardcore dedicated fans will get the best seats. IMHO, if you're willing to give up your job, your home, your life, etc. to stand in line for tickets, by God you should get good seats. Second, we really miss out on the social aspect. I've met a LOT of great people waiting in line, whether it be for G.A. shows, M&Gs, or Star Wars tickets. These are people I wouldn't trade for all the "convenience" in the world. Equality in ticket sales is for the birds. As long as there are enough seats in the venue, then everyone can go. And there's no such thing as a sold out show. I've been to too many "sold out" shows where I've gotten reasonable-excellent tickets FROM THE BOX OFFICE on the day of the show to believe that myth. We all know how many good seats are given to industry morons, while the real fans end up on the lawn or in the back row of the balcony. Why stand in line when you're stuck with not-great seats? For that matter, why stand in line when you can (almost always) go to the venue the day of the show and get bloody incredible tickets? * Since when did "real fan" mean that you had to give up the rest of your life? Good god, I was backpacking around Europe when tickets went on sale, and the on-sale date hadn't been announced before I left. I don't think there's a person here who won't call me a "hardcore dedicated fan" {some prefer the word "freak", or perhaps the phrase "obsessed freak" or "damned know-it-all who should FOAD", but we won't get into that right now ;) }, and I am currently holding exactly zero tickets for these shows. Do I somehow not deserve good tickets 'cause I didn't know when they'd be going on sale, nor did I have Internet access anyway? * While you get to meet some damned cool people, you also get to meet some big ole morons. It's the morons who spoils it, and they are the reason that so many places don't allow camping out or discourage it by instituting a lottery. I honestly can't blame venues/ticket agencies for not allowing camping out, given some of the downright horrible behavior I've experienced when doing so. I wouldn't try to get it unless you decide you must own every Tori single in existence. * Australian/New Zealand "UtP/More Pink" special tour edition album. It's two discs, the first is a regular edition of UtP, the second is a compilation of bee-sides from LE and UtP. This can be hard to find, and goes for upwards of US$50 these days. However, IMHO, it's worth it for the second disc. Try Gaslight Records at -- they've had 'em in the past, but I dunno what their current price is. {Also note that prices there are in Australian dollars, and IIRC the exchange rate is something like US$1 = AUS$1.75 or so {but don't quote me on that exchange rate}. Don't freak out when the price looks horrifically high. :) } * Various bootlegs. Information on all known commercial bootlegs is available at the Tori Bootleg Discography, . There are several LE and UTP-era bee-sides compilations, and they're of great quality {since all the bootlegger has done is take the singles and copy 'em onto a single disc} [1]. You may also want to ask around and see if someone'll make you a tape copy of it. Generally, if someone's willing to do this, it will cost you whatever the tape and shipping cost. HTH. :) /nad {honey, I'm home! miss me?} [1] I am not, generally speaking, a fan of bee-side compilations. I do make exceptions for the LE- and UtP-era compilations, however. All of the songs from the UK ltd ed singles from those albums are next to impossible to find, and if you do find 'em, you'll pay through the nose for 'em. None of that profit goes to Tori. The bootleg compilations are cheaper. I consider it the lesser of two evils: if none of the profit is going to Tori anyway, and this is the only way to hear the songs, you might as well spend as little as possible. That said, I simply cannot justify the purchase of BfP- and ftch-era bee-side compilations. All of the singles are readily available, and most of 'em are dirt cheap. You can get all the singles (plus the ultra-cool artwork, which you just don't get with the compilation), and pay less than the cost of the boot. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #153 *************************************
