We've recently had to change ISPs, so here's a quick note to change your bookmarks and links to the following URL: http://www.powerup.com.au/~evos/dan/tori/tald.html And as my little PSA/self-promotional plug, the TALD is essentially a place where you can find all (well, nearly all) of Tori's songs, including B-sides and covers, and read nifty quotes that she's said about them at the same time. Yes, the site is in dire need of an update. We're missing a few songs, we need to tweak some lyrics to the "choirgirl"-era b-sides, and so on. Um... probably July :) After exams are over :) Dani. == Dani Ringrose; fadagurl@torithoughts.org personal page: http://uq.net.au/~zzdringr/ the TALD: http://www.powerup.com.au/~evos/dan/tori/tald.html "I believe in that girl, I believe she is me, sometimes I believe she is... What is the significance? I thought about HJ being track 9 on BfP, I don't know if that's what it is and she's suggesting the Pele hotel. 2)Talula: When she says "It must be worth losing if it is worth something," does that mean a)the only thing it's good for is getting rid of or b)if you really care about something, you're willing to lose it 3)Northern Lad: I had a thought on the "you change like sugar cane" lyric. All I know about sugar cane is that when they're harvesting or whatever, they have to burn the field to get the dead stuff off. So maybe he's saying "when you change, you have to destroy one part of you." 4)Joan of Arc: Has Tori ever said anything about her? I can see Tori being fascinated with her, but I don't think I've heard anything. 5)Tori circa UtP: Does anybody else think that Tori looked most healthy/happy UtP era? I've noticed that the pictures I like best come from that time. The videos and tv performances from them seem to show her looking brighter and more energetic too. (I think she looks too thin LE era, in terms of videos, at least.) I don't know why this is; if her career is new enough to be exciting but now she's more stable in it. Or, just based on life circumstances, she was happier. Strange since that's after the cancer/Pledge incidents, but I wasn't there, how do I know?? Anyway, I'm just thinking here.... (sorry if this sound cliche). So like, if you really want it, it's must be worth risking getting hurt when you lose it. aimee ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 21:49:32 EDT From: Mermann658@aol.com Subject: Re: hj vid/talula/sugar cane/joan/utp Okay, I'm gonna take a stab at some of this....hehe >1) Hey Jupiter video: Tori is sitting in room 9. What is the significance? >I thought about HJ being track 9 on BfP, I don't know if that's what it is >and she's suggesting the Pele hotel. What a cool observation!!! I never made the connection before. Maybe it's how Tori percieves her songs personally. I know how she says they're her *girls*, but the hotel thing works for me...especially since her next CD was FTCH. >2)Talula: When she says "It must be worth losing if it is worth something," >does that mean > a)the only thing it's good for is getting rid of or > b)if you really care about something, you're willing to lose it Most often, I think this means trying to dissolve the *woman stereotype*. A woman using what men want, to get what she wants, vs. being an empowered individual, and not using tactics that promote the patriarch. "it must be worth losing" (not acting out the typical woman role), "if it is worth something" (working on women being percieved as equal...not to have shame in sexuality, etc.) Another way I've thought about it is an Alice Walker reference again. Alice Walker's mother's name is Minnie Tallulah Grant Walker. Alice became pregnant in her early twenties, and thought many times about killing herself over it. She did get an abortion, so that she could continue her women's rights work, unhindered. So, maybe... "It must be worth losing" (the baby) "if it is worth something" (the quest for women's rights). BTW.... "Talula" means "Jumping water" in one of the American Indian languages. Interesting, because Tori is part Cherokee, and uses so many references to water. I noticed that the lyric changes each time it comes up in the song. "you don't want to lose her, she must be worth losing" "I don't want to lose it, it must be worth something" "I don't want to lose him, he must be worth losing" .....Sometimes I'm just lost and confused.... Hope that helps some!
