This seems so odd to me that Tori would say she listens to Prodigy and Fiona Apple since Fiona Apple was quoted in Rolling Stone saying: "Tori Amos is the poster girl for rape." Which made me dislike Fiona as a person... And then Tori said this about Prodigy: "The rebellion is not about what clothes you are wearing or whether you turn your back to the audience-- it's not about shocking for the shock's sake. It's not about singing "Smack My Bitch Up" and pretending to be hard. All you do is to get your name on K-Mart's black list. It easy - and boring. So Prodigy, if you want to be hard, go to an abortion clinic and try to help those girls who have had an abortion in a front of 20 shotguns. Try to be rough and don't tell how you beat up your girlfriends-- if you got the balls to do that." - Tori quoted in an article in the March 13, 1998 issue of Rumba Magazine So those just seem like odd choices but who knows :-) May the faeries be with you, *Cindy* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 09:03:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Summer Smith Subject: Re: survey LE 1. The information you all gave was very helpful. I got a number of folks asking what Tori was like, so I'll share with you the little I remember. No, I didn't know her too well, but even back then, everyone was "aware" of Ellen. Don't remember her being an outcast, Jodi. Actually she was really popular. I imagine it's been mentioned in this group before, but she won numerous awards (methinks Homecoming Queen, Most Popular and Most Likely to Succeed). I just remember people used to point at her and say, "She's gonna be a big star one day." She just had that quality about her. She was a couple of years older than I was, but my sister was a good friend of hers. We also lived in the same neighborhood and shared many mutual friends. Sorry I don't have more insight than that. ;-) - -BR - -----Original Message----- From: Rosenthal, Brian [mailto:brosenth@UU.NET] Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 1999 8:27 AM To: precious-things@smoe.org Subject: Baltimore/Walking With You - 1980 Single Hello, all. Well, paint me ignorant! "Angie" is a cover song? Who did it originally? You know...I thought that survey wasn't going to be hard, but then I looked at all the songs...and I realized that it was very hard... Good idea though! This is something in response to the comment about many adolescents liking the song "Crucify." Yes..definately, I connect with it SO much...And actually, I was wondering if anyone out there has the same urges that I do...When EVER I hear the song "Crucify," I have this dire need to find a long, flowing skirt, some form of light, cotton top, sandals (or even bare foot), and around a half dozen or so female friends, and I just NEED to go dancing in the grass in the woods somewhere to the song! If it was raining, I'd be all the more happy, because I just feel that NEED!!! Anyone else EVER get the same urges, or am I just a bit odd? (never mind, I KNOW I'm odd.) You know...You'll have to forgive my rambling, all, but I just thought about something else. (I don't really know anyone else who loves Tori as much as I do in my city, so I don't really get to talk about her to anyone...) There are songs like "Crucify," "Precious Things," and "Little Earthquakes" that I connect to because of experiences in my life, but songs like "Me and a Gun," and "Honey" I've never EVER experienced what goes on in them. Here is my point, even though I've never been raped, or been in any serious relationship in my life, I feel like I have by listening to these songs! Its amazing to me, that Tori can make you feel everything she has been through by the music and the passion she uses! That, in short, is why she is my hero! Well...after that ramble, I'd like to close by saying that I went to see her on the "Plugged 98" tour on halloween! Great show, I must say! Thanx to all who made it this far! Jen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 17:38:08 -0400 From: krisis Subject: Survey + Justifications So, here's my Tori survey, but to make me feel less bad about what i consider to be spamming the list, i'm going to attempt to rationalize my choices a bit to make some conversation. I suppose it's a bit borish on my part to assume anyone wants to read this, but... oh well, maybe someone does. Little Earthquakes: *Silent All These Years* - sort of an obvious choice, but also because i really do adore this song and identify very strongly with parts of it. I've visited the "lost voice" theme in some of my own writing and later realized i had gotten it from this song. *Happy Phantom* - this song is just all sorts of happy for me, and i don't even know why. It's just that fun bouncing tempo and that strange swishy instrument in the background (: *Tear In Your Hand* - i never liked this song until i went to my first plugged show. The person who got me into Tori was there and this is her favorite song and i was just hoping Tori would play it for her, and when she did the song totally connected with me. Now it's one of my all time favorites. *Mother* - though i feel like i should put "Little Earthquakes" here because it's just so incredibly amazing how it all goes together, but "Mother" has this uncanny ability to slip past my radar and smack me right in the face when i listen to it. I can't describe it any other way. I used up to "a good soldier" as one of my senior yearbook quotes. Under The Pink: *Pretty Good Year* -i actually don't have a very strong attachment to this album, though i like very much. For some reason i like it as reading music; i had to read all these English novels this year and every one was accompanied by this album. PGY is just... so simple, the piano isn't really that complicated, the song is rather unadorned, but it's so strong and memorable. Also, it has one of Tori's rockin' bridges... Tori is the best in all of rock and roll at writing bridges. *Waitress* -the reason i started to listen to tori... hard to actually explain, but i saw the quote "so i want to kill this waitress" somewhere and it sounded like something Ani DiFranco would say inbetween songs, like on Living In Clip when she says "i'm just getting over the urge to kill someone and into the urge to ROCK." I could hear Ani saying this in my head, and i thought... 'well, lemme see how this Tori girl says it'... *Cornflake Girl* -actually i picked this not because it is the huge anthem song, but because i am in awe of the actually _music_ of it. And not just the piano... i love Caton's guitar work in it. Especially when he does that dance of his at shows. *Past The Mission* -i just like this one... no deeper meaning... Boys For Pele: *Professional Widow* -i used to hear my friend Andrea play this song, and i thought it was some sort of industrial remix because this Tori girl played piano. Imagine my surprise when i bought BfP... *Caught A Lite Sneeze* -this was my favorite song of the entire year when it came out, but every time i went to buy BfP i was intimidated by the Tori-mythos and the length of the album [and imagine if i had known about the piglet]. *Hey Jupiter* -when i saw Tori i knew this song by the Dakota remix, so i had no idea what she was playing whens she started this. Then she sang the first words, and my world suddenly was comprised of just her and her piano. Ever since this has been one of my all time favorites. *Doughnut Song* -I always get the sense that i'm missing volumes and volumes about this song. One day i mistakenly had this and Damage on repeat and after about an hour i felt like i was about to cry and i had no idea why and then i realized that it was the music and that it had been just these two songs on the whole time. >From The Choirgirl Hotel: *SHE'S YOUR COCAINE* -it's hard to pick the best from this album because for me the songs all stand very well on their own, as opposed to being inseperable in my mind as an album [which is how i feel about UtP and BfP]. But this is my hands down favorite song of all time, so i have to pick it. *iieee* -another amazingly perfect bridge... i could never follow the song when i first got the CD because it wasn't a very traditional verse/chorus/verse sort of structure, but whenever the bridge would begin it all came together for me. *Raspberry Swirl* -just all sorts of fun... and i love when songs are totally about sex but the listener might not ever realize it. *Spark* -one of the most perfect recorded songs i have ever heard; it takes my breath away every time i hear it. BeeSides: *Honey* -I was always in awe of how the guitar totally doubled the piano in the version on the HJ single [all this music/guitar related stuff is because i play guitar]. *Sister Janet* -so obscure... i spent so much time trying to figure it out that i fell in love along the way without really noticing. *Take To The Sky* -Just a triumphant song. She tells you to stand back, sit down, and shut up while just flies away. But why has she got that sword in her hand??? *Cooling* -Another example of how Tori can just channel raw emotion right through the mic&piano and into your ears and you can't even move. I still can't totally absorb this song when i hear all of it, but i'm doing well with the condensed version from Sessions. Cover: *Landslide* -For me Tori just took this song from Fleetwood Mac and made it hers. so, anyway, that's why i would pick the songs that i picked. Hope there was something interesting in there (: - -krisis http://fly.to/AMkitchen/ PS: i read somewhere that David Bowie's _Aladdin Sane_ was one of Tori's all-time favorite albums, so i suppose she likes Bowie a bit. And who could blame her??? PPS: whatever happened with getting a Tori video onto TRL on the 5th? I tried to request RS but i didn't realize the show came on so early in the day. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 19:19:30 -0400 From: Mikewhy Subject: Re: Tori On New Benefit Album for Kosovo >Pearl Jam, Morissette On Kosovo Benefit Album >YES!!
