Visit http://www.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 02:46:42 -0700 (PDT) From: John Drummond Subject: Tori's songbooks in review Y'all, I have all 6 of Tori's books (though buying the anthology was just a gratuitous waste, since I already had all the songs in it ;p), and most of them *are* too oversimplified... I ended up having to arrange almost every song so it sounded more like what she's actually playing when I played it... but one of the best things about the UtP songbook is that it has the Piano Suite in it, and both of those pieces are absolutely lovely, and sound like they do on the recording... I played those for my last piano recital in I think 1995, and a few of my friends said that Tori possessed me while I was playing or something... anyhow, that's one definite definite definite bonus to the UtP book... "Bells For Her" is trimmed down, they took out some of the non-vocal parts, and "Yes, Anastasia" is going to need some serious arranging if you want it to sound good, and the rest are even worse. The best of all of the songbooks by far is the b-sides book... a few of the songs in it are absolutely *perfect*, like "Sister Janet" and "Here. in my head" (which I had been trying to figure out on my own for *ages* before they released the book), but some of them are really, really, really wrong. "Honey" didn't even have the correct opening at all... I had to use the live recording of it from the "hey Jupiter" EP to finally figure it out. The LE book is kind of really sad... the best features of it are "Winter", "Precious Things", and some parts of "Mother". "Leather" omits the excellent jazzy bridges before the third verse and the end, it just goes straight to "ya dai" and you're left like, "Pardon me??" "Boys for Pele" is pretty okay overall, except that they chop parts of a lot of songs... but some of them are really great: "Horses" is near-perfect, "Blood Roses" too, "Marianne" is good, but kind of empty in parts (especially considering the lack of a backing string section), "Not the Red Baron" sounds good, but it comes in like 8 bars before the singing starts, rather than a minute or so before, like how it is on the recording... "Agent Orange" is delightful, even if it is a bit underdone in places, and "Twinkle" is of course right (if they'd fucked that up, it'd be time to get out the knives)... they completely ruined "Little Amsterdam", and "Doughtnut Song". "Little Amsterdam" left enough for me to arrange and fool around with, but "Doughtnut Song" is just out-and-out WRONG in places. It was a sad moment. The choirgirl book overall is about like the UtP book: good in some places, but mostly bad. Since the album itself wasn't focused on piano, a lot of the piano parts weren't very easy to hear, nor were they particularly used for anything more than as a percussive instrument in many of the songs, especially "Hotel" and "Raspberry Swirl" and "She's Your Cocaine". "Pandora's Aquarium" they got surprisingly right, and "Spark" doesn't even really bother with the complexity of Tori's bridge arrangements. All in all, I'd say that the books are worth buying if you know how to arrange the parts to your liking, or don't mind playing bastardized versions... but if you're looking for exact transcriptions of Tori, I'd run for the hills before buying any of them. Since it is so rare, it's hard to put a value on it -- value is determined by the market, and if there's none of that item in the market, how do you know? I haven't seen one get sold for awhile, but the last time I did, it went for over $1000.
