Just wondering if that is > indeed the inspiration behind her song. > The Flying Dutchman ("De Vliegende Hollander") is a ghost ship in nautical legend which sails in the vicinity of the Cape of Good Hope. In this version, a Dutch mariner attempted to sail the cape in a storm and he uttered various blasphemous oaths in the presence of God. For this he was doomed to sail the cape for all eternity. An other version tells of the captain who sails aimlessly on the North Sea, dicing with the devil for his soul. The term also refers to a haunted figure. This is ONE meaning of the phrase. For all of you fellow drinkers- you may be familiar with it as a yummy mixed drink!! I apologize for not citing my sources this time around. I guess I'm surprised that anyone paying attention to the events of the past week or so pertaining to this upcoming tour isn't on the same page with this stuff by now. A week is a long time on the internet. ;-) Anyhow, The Dent has been full of this story since the evening of the press conference which was held about the tour on Tuesday of last week (April 27). I will cite a specific article online which explains details of this upcoming release-- http://rl.sonicnet.com/news/archive/story.jhtml?id=513762&pid=506283 [...] The still-to-be-launched site will include songs from both singers in addition to concert webcasts, interviews, chats and tour photos. It's undecided at this point whether Morissette's cut will be a live track or a B-side. Amos' song will be an unreleased track, possibly taken from the double CD (featuring one live disc and one studio disc) she plans to release in the fall. [...] Now for a quick lesson in media analysis. Magazines such as Rolling Stone have lead times of multiple weeks. I thought RS had managed to get it down below a month but at this point I'm not so sure. In other words, an interview is done and a story is written, and no one has the printed magazine with that article in it until several weeks later. Obviously, printed newspapers have a potential lead time of less than one day for news stories although features are not always rushed to print as quickly, and the Sunday supplemental magazines and such are typically printed some weeks in advance. Needless to say, an article appearing in an online magazine can be put up within minutes of being written. Feeding all these concepts into our brains we can easily deduce that if an article comes out in the printed version of Rolling Stone on a Saturday quoting Arthur Spivak as saying the fall release is going to be three discs, and then a week and a half later information comes out of a press conference from the previous day saying the fall release is going to be a two-disc set, the story from that press conference the day before is going to be much more timely; and unless someone has reason to question the basic accuracy of the information in the more recent item it makes much more sense to believe what *it* told us as opposed to what the printed RS article told us. And also in this instance, Michael says on The Dent that he spoke with someone in Tori's management last week and they confirmed the details of the upcoming release. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 May 1999 13:49:21 EDT From: XXXPandora@aol.com Subject: Re: New(?) According to the now defunct fanzine "Upside Down", when Tori was writing LE, she called a good friend of hers and asked him to discribe himself. He was standing in the kitchen and noticed some glasses he and Tori had gotten from a fast food place together. On one of them was the Flying Dutchman story and he said that was what he was like. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the friends' name was Rantz (i'm unsure of the spelling). So that was the main inspiration for the writing of the song, she was writing about a friend. If I may; actually, with a large periodical like Rolling Stone and Spin, the lead time is 2 to 3 *months* from layout till print. So the press releases are not updated after the layout is made (unless it's vastly important, like a cancelation etc.). Anything said three months ago is so out of date, just because Tori is so creative that no one is sure what will come out at the end. >Obviously, printed newspapers have a potential lead time of less than >one day for news stories although features are not always rushed to >print as quickly, and the Sunday supplemental magazines and such are >typically printed some weeks in advance. Tori digs it, I dig it. All is right with the world and I'm in a good mood (finally) We'll do this as a "mock" interview, shall we? Me: So, besides being a big ol' pain in the ass, I understand that you actually had a song written about you by the famous musician, Tori Amos. Rantz: Hmmm, well, I don't know if it's ABOUT me.... well, PARTS of it are, and it was written for me, so yeah, i guess so. M: And that would be "Flying Dutchman", correct? R: Yep M: So, how exactly did it all come about? R: How did it come about.... cripes. OK, back in '88-89, round there, things were not going very well for either Tori or I. We had been friends for a few years at the time, and were both... how do I say this.... stifled, I guess. We were both being "Kept down by the man!" (laughs) She had just gone through the hell of Y Kant Tori Read, and I was living back in Washington State with my mom after having some very scary near-fatal experiences in Los Angeles. Tori and I spent a lot of time on the phone, talking about what we "wanted to do with our lives", as it were. basically, giving each other support and saying "this is a shitty time, it'll pass, we deserve better." M: Care to talk about those near-fatal experiences? R: No. Anyway, Tori got back on her feet a little faster than i did. And started working on a "different type of album" for atlantic. So, she called me up during one of her bouts of writing, and asked me "Rantz, if you had to describe yourself as something, what would it be?" Now, this, in particular was a BAD time. I can't remember what was going on, but i was very depressed. I won't say suicidal, but I was about as far down as you can get. So, I told her; "Tori, I'm the Flying Dutchman." M: Why the Flying Dutchman? R: That's exactly what she asked. I explained, A.) the majority of my lineage is dutch, b.) the story fits me right now. Tori told me she wasn't familiar with the story so i went to the cupboard (While still on the phone) and found one of those Skipper's "Legends of the Sea glasses they had as give aways. This one told the Cliff's notes version of the story, How Captain VanEyck, faced with a brutal storm, implored god to save his men. There was no answer, and Van Eyck called on god twice more with the same result. Finally, fearing for the safety of his men, he called on the devil, and made a deal that if he and his men traveled to safety, the devil could have his soul. The devil agreed and the storm dissapated. No sooner had the storm dissapated, than an angel came down from heaven, informing VanEyck that he had betrayed god. Van Eyck protested saying god had abandoned him, but the angel would not be swayed and told Vvan Eyck, "For your crime against the lord, you are cursed to sail the sea forever, to never find safe harbor, or the comfort of the shore or home." I thought that was pretty apt, considering what i was feeling at the time. M: And how did Tori respond to that? R: She was quiet for a while then asked "Is that really how you feel?" and i told her yes. She and i talked for a bit longer, then hung up. M: So how did that become a song? R: Well about a week later Tori calls and asks if I've got a minute or two, I tell her yes, and she starts playing this song over the phone, just her and the piano. It was amazing and very touching, and I would say it's by far one of the nicest things anyone's ever done for me. M: So how much of it is about you? R: ABOUT me? well, the first verse, and parts of the rest... You'd have to ask Tori about that. (pauses) I don't know if she'd remember though. She didn't remember the "skipper's" glass'til I reminded her about it. M: Anything else? R: Not really, buy the tour book, write to the mechandisers and tell them i did a great job. (laughs) so, there you have it. - -- Rantz A Hoseley http://www.primenet.com/~rantz - -*- end Rantz's post -*- HTH. :) /nad ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #131 *************************************
