I am actually intrigued with the idea that Tori may be touring with Alanis. Remember, this is a special short tour to promote the live album and not a regular Tori tour. I am sure when Tori releases her next studio album, she will tour alone in a manner that we all know and love. For now they may be trying something different, and since it is an extra and unexpected tour, I am interested to see how it turns out. Of course we don't have official word on Tori touring, but Rolling Stone Magazine and some very reliable sources tell me the tour will happen and will involve Alanis. I assume that could change and there is no way to know for sure until we get official confirmation, but it is looking more likely every day and I for one am excited about it. Don't think of it as Tori changing her touring methods....this is just something extra if it turns out to actually happen. I think it could be quite interesting! I would love to meet Tori at a Meet and Greet sometime. I have been a avid fan of music for around 20 years in my life now, and I cannot honestly think of any other musical group (possibly Psychic TV and R.E.M comes close) which has totally affected me emotionally. When I sing along w/ Tori, even quietly or silently, I literally get chills through my body/soul and sometimes feel like weeping depending upon her song. This still baffles me to this day...that some musician can have such a effect on a person. Does anyone else feel this way? (And yes, there's a couple of lines from FTCGH which affect me the same way..especially the lines 'By the woods, by the woods..from 'Black Dove') If I meet Tori, I would explain this to her. >>> Richard Handal 04/17/99 12:30PM >>> PokaDot420@aol.com said: > ...if i ever get the joy of meeting tori for a long enough time to > tell her what her music really means to me and how much it has helped > me i know i would be a big emotional mess* The fact is--and I've seen it for myself as well as heard about it many times, so I fully believe it--if you just look deeply into Tori's eyes at a meet and greet and say with all sincerity something such as "Thank you so much--for everything. It's really been amazing for me," she'll know exactly how you feel. And at that point, a big hug from her with tears in her eyes is more than likely. I know it means a lot to her to get such feedback from people, and it's actually possible to get something that short and simple across to her at a meet and greet, and probably even without totally breaking down. And I do wish that anyone who feels strongly about meeting Tori could get the chance. Folks may be prepared to meet a goddess or an idol, but they'll probably be struck by how much she is another human being than she is any of that. And I think that's cool--finding out that Tori is human is cool. Rachel, I can't think of a specific interview, but if you go to the Dent's Articles section, you will definately be able to pick and choose at random and stand a 50/50 chance of hitting a pertinent quote. I also want to applaud your subject. I have long thought that the most creative are the ones with the most pain (ie: abuse) in their lives. Example: Beethoven was so frequently physically abused that he went deaf from having his ears boxed. *note: I do NOT want to start a debate on if Tori was abused, it's none of our business* Having noted that, I wish to say that I believe childhood abuse enhances creativity. Look at career criminals. They are quite clever until they get caught (everyone gets got sooner or later), some are positively brilliant. They all admit to abuse in their childhood. I personally believe that my own abuse gave me my gift for writing. Outside the subject matter it inspires, it has in someway manifested a wonderful imagination and belief in things that cannot be seen. In a lot (most?) abused children, the spirit is broken. They become stupid and lethargic. They don't believe enough in themselves to allow their imagination to grow. They are literally *beaten*. But some, myself included, found that the mind was a very safe place to escape to, somewhere that abuse didn't exist. Like Tori said in MAAG, she went away in her mind; let music overtake her (singing holy, holy) and going far away, to the Barbadoes of her imagination; the nicest, safest place she could *imagine*. Imagination is a wonderful thing, and the root of all that is creative. Even staid, fact driven scientists must have imagination to think of problems and formulas. But I believe that the most imaginative, creative people are also those who suffer horribly at some point in their lives. And although that is a tragic thought, it's nice to think of something positive coming from all that negitivity. I mean, they're pictures of Tori, so they're cool, but what are they? Do they have a point or are they just pictures? I feel kinda stupid about my other question. I often see the stuff about a few Tori songs and I've never heard these songs. To name a few: Merman, If 6 Was 9, Humpty Dumpty, Here, In My Head, and Flying Dutchman. Now, I own every Tori CD and single I have ever seen in stores, except a few imports, but I've looked and they're not on them. I feel stupid because everyone seems like they know these songs, but I've never heard them. Are they songs she does live? I've been to one concert and I don't think she played any of these. Where do these songs come from? I've been reading the posts of those who do not wish to meet Tori, because they're afraid of an inevitable letdown, but people -- you will *not* be let down, I promise! I was so glad I had the opportunity to meet Tori this past tour...no matter how brief it was, and no matter that I lost all capacity for speech like a big 'ole dumbass. I completely respect the wishes of those who do not want to meet her, but I'm sitting here thinking about what you're missing if you do not just take one chance and go to ONE Meet & Greet. Tori IS human -- warm, generous, with big ears and a wide mouth -- she's so *real*, and somehow, that made her music speak to me so much more. She's not a goddess, not someone to put up on an unreachable pedestal...what's amazing is that when you meet her, you realize she's just an incredible spirit who happened to be blessed with this gift of music, and she's chosen to share it with the rest of us. I think that's beyond special -- I think, inside, she just *had* to do it -- just like I *had* to fall in love with her. I guess what I mean is that Tori's less a mother figure and more a sister figure to her fans -- and meeting her only reinforces that. Here is an article that appears in the May 13, 1999 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. This issue is just now reaching some RS subscribers and has Kurt Cobain on the cover. "Tori Amos is checking back into the choirgirl hotel: The singer plans to release a three-CD set in early fall. The as-yet-untitled project will include two discs of live material culled from Amos' 1998 US tour and a disc of all-new material, which Amos is currently recording near her home in Cornwall, England. Amos' 1998 tour was her first with a backing band. Her manager, Arthur Spivak, says Amos was so pleased with the results that she decided to document them. 'It was a special tour, and she taped the show every night', he says. 'Plus there are hundreds of bootlegs out there, so she decided to give something back to the fans, instead of watching them ripped off'. Of the new songs, Spivak says, 'She got on a roll in the studio, and the songs just fit with the live material'. Amos plans to release a single from the collection in mid-August, prior to pairing with Alanis Morissette for a five week US tour. Spivak would not confirm the dates, saying only that they 'looked likely', but promoters and agents contacted said the tour is a done deal" - Matt Hendrickson. I must emphasize that there has been no official word from Tori's management or record company about this, but that is not unusual (unofficial sources often reveal these things before official ones do.) So nothing is for sure until we get that confirmation. But this article combined with some strong rumors certainly seems to indicate that a tour with Tori to support the live album is almost definite and a tour with Alanis very possible. Loria said: > okay i know this is still technically rumour, but is anyone out there > mildly disturbed at the thought of tori touring with alanis > morissette? Although I'm sure a lot of fans in both Tori's and Alanis's camps are going to not be thrilled with the idea of this tour (BTW, consider it a done deal, not a rumor--it's *gonna* happen), and some folks are even going to be screaming bloody murder about it, I think it will be an interesting and fun tour. I loved Jagged Little Pill and played the heck out of it in 1995, and I think Alanis's new album is really great, too. I have it on as I type this. It has a real intensity and some psychedelia about it. Alanis seems like a sincere, even spiritual person, and she and Tori seem to have a lot of respect for one another on a personal as well as a musical level, too. Tori visited Alanis backstage at one of her shows a couple years ago, and from things each have said in interviews, there even appears to be a kind of chemistry between them. For years, Alanis has said in interviews that the Little Earthquakes album changed her. If I'd only seen one Tori concert last year and this was my only hope of seeing a second anytime soon I'm not sure how I would feel about this upcoming co-headliner tour, but as Michael points out on The Dent, this is essentially a lagniappe--something in addition to what we were expecting to get from Tori in the first place. Further, I've heard that Tori is looking forward to this tour, and I hope everyone else can come to a place where they might allow themselves to enjoy this tour as much as she appears ready to. I'm not sure if this has been reported publicly, but from what I've heard this tour is to be entirely in outdoor amphitheatres in the U.S. I've also heard it on good authority from multiple places that this is not going to be a 3-CD set, but that it was pared down to being a 2-CD set, despite what the Spivak quote in Rolling Stone said. I expect that quote was given a number of weeks ago when it was still being slated for three discs. (Now I'm trying to debunk *Spivak*. Great.) This is perhaps one of the rudest comments I've heard on this list in a while. I'm really disappointed. It's extremely bad form to comment on the depths of someone's fandom. This matter has been brought up before, but a person can be a fan of Tori without owning EVERY album, every single and every bootleg known to man. Hell, someone who just heard Spark on the radio and fell in love can be just as much a fan as a jaded person who runs out and blows all of their money on Tori. Tori Stories can be difficult to find. The first edition {with picture discs and in a nifty box with Tori's 1996 Spin cover appearance as the cover} is pretty rare, and is going for over $100 these days {one eBay auction had it up over $200}. There have been reprints of it, and they're somewhat cheaper, although still difficult to find. IMHO, Tori Stories isn't worth it. The first disc is the only one that was really "new" material. It has the Baltimore sessions, some UtP solo piano demos, a wedding performance from the 70s, and a little interview called "Atilla the Honey". It's been re-released on its own twice, first as "Ultra Rarities", then as "Wedding Performance". The second disc is a LE-era show, previously released as "White Horses". The third disc is a compilation of covers and rarities, all available on other covers/rarities compilation discs/tapes. The fourth disc is a UtP-era show, also available on another commercial bootleg. I would suggest finding a CD trader who's willing to make you a CD copy of this [1]. If you ask nicely, they'll probably even provide color copies of the liners. It'll be way cheaper than trying to find a copy of the real thing, and the quality will be just as good. /nad [1] I normally do this, but I'm moving this week, have finals the first week of May, and then am headed to Europe for a couple of weeks.
