Perfect Pitch is the ability to identify a pitch when it is played. For Example, if someone with perfect pitch were to hear a note played on any instrument, they would know what note is being played (C,D,E. . etc. ). it has nothing to do with reading music or sight reading. A person with no musical experience can have perfect pitch. Unfortunately not a lot of them would know that w/o musical experience. As for tori having Perfect Pitch I don't know. They have a second version of "Professional Widow" on them instead. My question is, isn't "Pele" supposed to be a novel? Wouldn't leaving one of the songs off of it be like taking a chapter out of a book? I can't imagine "Pele" without PtDO.... that song really ties the CD together for me. Why would they decide to leave a song off of an album like this? Any thoughts? Thanks! Sight-reading, is not that. it's taking a piece of music you have never played/seen before, and then playing it. i've been playing piano for 19 years and was in band for 9...sight reading has always been that. i understand what amy is saying on perfect pitch. i've always seen that as having maybe someone say "sing a c" and that singer just belts out a "c" ~~becka ICQ#14314488 AOL IM - SwyngBaybe ~~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~ http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/Outlet/1174 ~~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~ Green Limosine for the redhead dancing, dancing girl ~~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~*:*~~ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Apr 1999 09:56:26 -0700 From: "Megasusİ" Subject: Re: Perfect Pitch? I hope I haven't confused anyone! Well.... here's the thing. I heard that Tori doesn't even really know -how- to read music. When I was learning to read/play music.. sight-reading was what we did when we got a new peice of music and played it for the first time. If Tori can't or doesn't read music, sight-reading isn't a very good term in my opinion. Being able to play or sing by ear is what I think you're refering to. When I was young, I could listen to a song, sit down at a piano and play it. (Unfortunately, I didn't practice enough or build on that talent and now I can't play very much at all) I think Tori just has a natural gift to play music.. she can play by ear, like I did when I was little. She did it when she was little, she loved it and she made it her life. (And I'm very glad she did. :) As far as 'perfect pitch', I've never personally heard that term... but whatever it is, Tori probably has it. lol. Just my 2 cents. The answer to this one is easy: money. Professional Widow was a huge club hit, especially in Europe. EastWest decided to take advantage of that, so they removed Voodoo and replaced it with one of the PW remixes. It is, as I understand, the version that EastWest is keeping in print. I alawys found it odd that Voodoo was released as a single in the US, but it got pulled from the Euro BfP. I'm not sure how much Tori had to say in this matter. Likewise, on the Japanese BfP {where they tacked "Toodles Mr. Jim" on the end}, I can't imagine that she had much say in that either. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Apr 1999 12:54:50 PDT From: "Terry Ferrell" Subject: Tori Stories I have recently been looking for a Tori bootleg called "Tori Stories," but I have been unsuccessful in finding it. This was written by nadyne@rmta.org awhile back: (For those who don't know, BfP was re-released in the UK. They removed ItSoHV and replaced it with one of the remixes of PW. That's right, there are -two- PWs on that disc.) While I think that the one with the PW remix is the only one in print, it shouldn't be horribly difficult to find the original. There were a -lot- of the original pressed, plus the re-release where Tori replaced the original Talula with the tornado remix which also still has ItSoHV. {I don't have numbers for outside Europe, but there were 800,000 of the original US BfP pressed.} If you have a used CD store in your area, I'd check 'em out. There is a US single of ItSoHV, with a bunch of remixes. It should still be available on CDNow and the like. Ok!! As for why they would take ItSoHV off the album is absolutely beyond me... But the PW remix was up on the dance charts for awhile, so that might be one reason - popularity. - -Noelle- ~~How Many Fates Turn Around In The Overtime?~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 20:40:57 -0500 From: "Aimee" Subject: Intro & Re: Perfect Pitch? These are people who can tune a piano by ear. I play the harp & have to tune by ear, since I don't own a tuner. 48 strings, OY! It takes forever. But I by *no* means have perfect pitch...it's more a matter of practice. I remember my band teacher telling us a story about this kid with perfect pitch. She was baby-sitting this 4-yr-old one night and they were playing some game or something, and she started singing happy birthday. The kid listened to her with this weird look on his face, and finally he said "That's not happy birthday!". And then he started singing the song in a different key...he had such a good ear that he didn't recognize the song when it was sung in a diff. key from the one he had heard it in originally...weird, eh? I'm so sorry if I was unclear on my perfect pitch explanation! I'm glad a few others helped do a better description. As Jennifer said, I am a music major as well, I deal with this often too, and I guess I just expect everyone to know what I am talking about, Bad assumption. I think that perfect pitch is amazing, and I have been dying to know if Tori has it, or just good "relative " pitch (oh no, am I assuming again?). I have a friend, (who is also an avid EWF) who is a pianist and Harpist, and she was dicovered by her mother to have perfect pitch, when she was five. I have noticed before (being the geek musician I can be sometimes) that Tori always sings "me and a gun" in the same key, everytime. That is a pretty good indicator, not to mention her early piano prodigiousness. ( is this a word?) anyway. I wish I knew for sure. I wish an interviewer would ask. Oh well. sorry if i confused...or have further confused.. I have a faerie on my lap! :) Wings and things, Amy ........................................................... Okay, I am am a music major and have to deal with (and suffer through) these issues every day. Perfect Pitch - More common among Asians (I don't know why), hereditary, cannot be "learned", the ability to hear a note and identify it by its name (A,B,C,D...etc) which also means the ability to hear and identify intervals, transcribe music as it is being played, perfect sight-singing, etc.....which brings us to...... Sight-singing - being able to look at music on a page and sing it without and prior knowledge of the piece or any help from an instrument. The key to this is the ability to hear and identify intervals (the distance between 2 notes played either harmonically - at the same time; or melodically - in immediate succession) and match pitch. One does not have to have perfect pitch to be able to sight sing, but it sure is a big help (those who are blessed with perfect pitch have no trouble sight-singing). Now, most of the people I know who have perfect pitch are pianists but I don't know if that's statistic or coinsidence. Ear-training, a course incorporating all aspects of aural (by ear) theory, is offered and stressed in all good music schools (including Peabody). When one is skilled enough in this art, it is almost like having perfect pitch, but not quite. Now, after all my rambling and clearing things up, I have not answered the original question "Does Tori have perfect pitch?" I do not know. BUT, I haven't heard or read anything about it and I have a feeling a gift like that would have made its way into the public eye SOMETIME.
