Well, here it is...being very curious as I am, I started to play around on my Corel Draw, and figured out the font to be the worldwide-very-popular Arial...Well, the Arial MT Black...the secret is then to make the spacing between the letters, a -35%, so they are close together just as in the album...the result is not exactly the same (because of spaces between certain letters), but if you did not have the album with you, you would not be able to tell the difference... Adding to the TRL thread...thanks Erin for posting the most appropritate quote, "I am an acquired taste, like anchovies. Not everyone likes those hairy little things." TA And I agree...my best friend has just started to listening to Tori, because she finally asked me to lend her an album...I lent her LE...she loved it, and is not into UTP. I think no one should be obligated to listen to Tori because they will never really appreciate everything we see in her. Therefore, I don't agree she should be on TRL...people should look for her, ask for a friend to lend them the video, or whatever, but not have thousands of people watching something they never asked for... THe ones who are going to vote, would be us, and we've already seen, and most probably own the video, so what is the point? I vote..No. besos, a todos! C. (note: i did not say everyone.) so why vote to get her on a show for one day, that many of us don't even watch, just so she can be listened to by a bunch of people, the majority of whom are really not interested and just want to get to the next backstreet boys video. it will not increase her popularity. the minority of people watching, who might have been open to the experience of discovering her, will discover her in time. she's not really underground. who knows, maybe they will run into me and i'll make them a tape. but, throwing her onto a show where she clearly is not welcome is not the way to increase her popularity. they've shown tori videos on mtv before, and they stop abruptly because they are not popular with many people. if you watch trl and you want to see tori on there, vote for her, and maybe she'll win, but if you don't watch trl, don't vote for her, because it is not you who is watching the show. if they want their nsynch, let 'em have it. there's nothing wrong with that. it is a vote for a reason. love, freddiep.s. when tori didn't win the grammies everyone was happy that she is not mainstreamor whatever, so i don't understand where all this hostility towards those people who think she is special and not mainstream is coming from. be careful and make sure you yourself are not being hippocritical. - -- "When this battle is over, I feel I will survive, In the battle of the dragon, no one walks away..." -Stevie Nicks ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 13:21:45 EST From: Heather980@aol.com Subject: Re: Tori Amos on TRL I really must say, that I do watch TRL every once in a while, but it would blow my mind if Tori was on it, anywhere on it! Heather ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 13:00:04 EST From: ToriGalore@aol.com Subject: Tori Amos, MTV, and musical elitism Oh no, a touchy subject, hide me! ^_~ Really, this is my view on it... MTV does NOT hate Tori. They gave her an Unplugged, an Ultrasound, and when that Revue show was on, one of those... while she's not their most FAVOURITE artist (God kill me if I ever see "Tori Amos' 50 Favorite Videos!"), it's not as if they totally despise her. Sure, seeing a video by her is as rare as catching a glimpse of a solar eclipse while tripping over the 64 degree longitude line while wearing a bee costume a la Blind Melon, but that's to be expected. After all, VIDEOS sell records... Ultrasounds, for the most part, don't. Quite honestly, I'm more of a VH1 fan. Sure, Storytellers was butchered to heck, but still, you have more of a chance of seeing or hearing Tori there than anywhere else. The other day I caught the live SATY video they made from Storytellers footage and the day before that I saw Spark. And even on those somewhat rampant Tori free days, VH1 plays a fair amount of other good artists like Sarah McLachlan and such... I even saw a Bjork video a few days back! ^_^ But back to the original subject... this is my take. I've met some EVIL Toriphiles in my life. Ones that when I say that I'm fifteen years old and first met the sweet sound of Tori Amos' voice in 1997 laugh their heads off. "You're not a real Toriphile!", they scream. "You're too YOUNG to be a REAL Toriphile! We REAL Toriphiles knew her music back in 1991!". What these people don't understand is that everyone has to start SOMEWHERE. Of COURSE I didn't get into Tori around 1991... I was, what, six, seven back then? And for the most part, six year olds can't understand something like "Girl". But just because she entered my life in a VERY appropriate time (for me, at least), which happened to be six years after her debut, does NOT make me any less of a Toriphile. But I'm getting off topic again. Let me start a new paragraph... Here we go. TRL, should we, or should we not? I, for my own part, would. If her lyrics touch anyone, ANYWHERE, while they flip through the channels and catch part of the song, I say, go for it. That and I'd like to hear Mister Daly's comments. ^_~ "Raspberry Swirl", while not my favourite, would probably be best, since it's the latest and most accessible, while "Jackie's Strength" might work as well, because of it's remix sister's new found strength in clubs. I think some of you are overreacting in a BIG way... it's not going to be an everyday thing, people. Just for one day, to catch a sight of her at PERHAPS number ten, it would be like some big inside joke for all of us... it wouldn't make her trendy, it wouldn't make her record sales jump up by four hundred percent, but it would put a face to the name... almost everyone has HEARD of Tori Amos, but they've never seen or listened to her before. I give a thumbs up. ^_^ Took me long enough, LOL. Oooh, now this is gonna be fun... You must forgive me, it's about 1:30 here in the morning and my mind is not working at it's top proficiency. But being the sick person I am I want to write something that should stir up many responses ... does anyone have any noteworthy or memorable stories from the tour? Let me share a few with you, allright? Little Earthquakes... Little Earthquakes... Little Earthquakes... yes, this is the infamous story of a girl named Lissa, her friend named Josh, and a plan to tell Tori about a very unfortunate boy. Background info... I have a friend... some of you may have heard of his, his name is Joshua, and he's a sweetheart... to make a long story short, he was raped as a child and has been diagnosed with HiV/AIDS. My first Tori concert was on August 6, 1998, and he gave me the news on August 5th... I almost wasn't going to go to the concert, I was so upset. He lived a state or two away from me, so I couldn't be near him... I just spent HOURS in my room, listening to his favourite song, Little Earthquakes. Over and over... "I can't reach you...". There's nothing as devastating as knowing that your guy friend, who's only fifteen for the love of god, is going to die before you. LONG before you. Well, anyway, he assured me to go to the concert and have a good time (he threatened bodily harm, lol). So I went, trying not to think about him, but it was impossible... the minute the Devlins left the stage and Tori came out (okay, the hour in-between...), all I could think was, "Tori... I know you've only played this twice so far... but please... please...", and the rest of my comment faded into thin air... I knew she knew. The show started. PT rolled off her tongue like wildfire... CALS and iieee were both wonderful... I was in a trancelike state, and I couldn't even remember how the beginning of LE started... especially when she started playing it. But it hit me fast when I figured out that yes, Lissa, this is NOT Honey... I never cried so hard in my life. She added some extra lyrics in one part of it... my bootleg is awful, but I distinctly remember hearing an "I can't reach you/sweet boy, I can't reach you now..."... I died. I just DIED in my chair. Afterwards I let out the loudest "THANK YOU TORI!" I could manage and she looked at me and smiled. Well, after that, I started a letter campaign online to have Tori know the story behind Josh. When I told him my plan, he laughed and told me that he wanted to kill me... which means "okay". ^_~ I don't know if any of you gave her any of those letters, I was unable to, but if you did, please contact me, okay? Well, anyway... second Tori show, November 8, 1998. Josh went into a coma on November 7th. Again, I was afraid and scared and I REALLY didn't want to go... he was far, far from me, and I couldn't be with him... but I knew he'd want me to go, so I went. And right before the show, I just thought one of those SOLID thoughts, the type that echo in your mind... "Please Tori... Little Earthquakes... please, tonight.". So the show went on... PT, iieee, PtM, Cruel... Little Earthquakes... more improvisations at the ending... but this time, it felt natural. When the song began, I could almost HEAR her telling me, "okay, Earthquakes it is". That woman can read minds, I swear to god. Well, I guess that's it for now... I just spent twenty minutes writing that... if you actually read this far, thank you... love you, and goodnight! I think we all need to take a few deep breaths and calm down a little bit. When did we get so competitive? Isn't part of Tori's music about freedom of expression and individual choice? Who are we to decide who is or is not "worthy" of listening to Tori? Is everyone going to get the same thing out of Tori's music that other people get? Of course not! That's what makes her music so special. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to interpret what she is saying. Why do you think we spend so much time sharing our interpretations of her songs? We all get something different out of the lyrics and the music. We are all very deeply connected to Tori's music in some way, shape, or form. That's why we are all on this list. I can understand why some of us would be upset if we felt that Tori's music was underappreciated by people who "just don't get it". It's ok to feel that way, but it is NOT ok to try to keep her music from these people. The way I see it, if it makes them happy, then the music is serving it's purpose. It doesn't always have to be about really deep thoughts. I mean, what's so amazing about really deep thoughts? (sorry... I couldn't resist!) I found two quotes from Tori that seem appropriate. "You look at a crowded dinner table and you can see what's going on from what people are eating, the way they hold their forks, what they're saying and what they're not saying. Then you can look under the table and see what they're doing with their feet. It's the same thing with a song. It's creating an experience for someone to step into." "It's like, the other guy may have the peanut butter and jelly, but you're the one with the chocolate chip cookies. There's a balance there." What I'm trying to say is, chill out everyone! Enjoy the music! Keep on loving Tori! Don't worry so much about what everybody else thinks. AT any rate, i'm not a big fan of putting tori on this TRL. i feel this show is not a good representative of music, and i'd rather not see one of my favourite artists listed on there. however, i am very willing to spread tori to others. i'd just rather have it done in a more dignified way. tori isn't potato chips. i dont think anchovies would like to be served with your common dip. ;) ~~loria~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 16:37:29 -0800 From: "Megasusİ" Subject: Re: Tori Amos, MTV, and musical elitism First of all, I'd like to say Hiya to everybody! I'm new to the list.. and glad to be here! ^_^ Dozo yorushiku onegai shimasu! (Literally means.. please be kind to me... ^_^;;;) And for those wondering, no.. I'm not Japanese.. I just take it in school. Anyway.. on to the message! ToriGalore@aol.com wrote: > But back to the original subject... this is my take. I've met some EVIL > Toriphiles in my life. But just > because she entered my life in a VERY appropriate time (for me, at least), > which happened to be six years after her debut, does NOT make me any less of a > Toriphile. But I'm getting off topic again. Let me start a new paragraph... First of all, let me say... THANK YOU... ^_^ I feel the same way sometimes.. that people don't view me as an adequate Toriphile just because I'm young (almost 18) and I didn't get into Tori 8 years ago. I just got into Tori about a year ago.. I was listening to songs like God and Cornflake Girl on the radio... and I thought God was an awesome song.. but I didn't know who sang it. One day a friend mentioned Tori to me.. and I asked "Oh.. what does she sing?" And that opened up a whole new world.. I think the next song I heard was Winter.. and Crucify.. and I was totally hooked. ^_^ Now I have 11 Tori CDs, a video, and the biography.. and I've done a report on her and RAINN for school. Anywhoo, I totally know what it's like to feel like a little kid in the world of Tori.. I joined the rmt-a newsgroup and thought everybody was going to -hate- me.. but there are some really cool people there. But anywhoo... I think it would be awesome to see more of Tori on MTV and VH1.. I think it's silly for anybody to be 'selfish' and not want Tori to be more popular... and who says she isn't popular anyway? Look at all the webpages about her.. all the MLs and the newsgroup with all the fans.. I think she's -far- from unpopular. I was flipping through DMX last night and found Crucify playing... and then I flipped to another channel and found BT/Sasha.. and I didn't know anything about BT until I heard Blue Skies.. and that's a totally awesome song. Anywhoo.. I'm getting off subject again. Well, I'll cut this anyway... for a first post, it's a bit long. ^_^ I don't know if I made my point, but I guess we'll see. Hope ya'll have a nice day! ^_~ - -- ^_~Megasus~_^ http://members.xoom.com/Megasus/ ICQ# 14241089 or 134862 *~The Divine Princess of the Church of Daughter-chan!~* *~Mistress worshipper of the Kawaii Mazoku Priest, Xelloss!~* *~....and List Admin of the Xelloss-Lovers ML!~* "I've been raisin' up my hands, drive another nail in.. got enough guilt to start my own religion." -Tori Amos "Just when you escape, you have yourself to fear..." -Tori Amos ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 19:55:50 EST From: IsItRite@aol.com Subject: Re: Toriphoria & .wav files 1) Is the Toriphoria website still around? And I'll go even further and say that if anyone thiks Tori doesn't aspire to sell many millions of records and to be able to sell out 90,000-seat football stadiums they're only fooling themselves. If Tori were able to be as popular in every way as Madonna was at her height in the 1980s I think it would be wonderful. I wish her every success. She certainly deserves it. When I -first- heard BfP.. I didn't like it.. but then I listened to it a second time... a third and fourth time... read some stuff about it.. and I appreciated it alot more. So it's not my least favorite.. but neither is anything else. I think I listen to UtP more often than anything else.. just because I leave music on when I'm sleeping, and it's a tame album.. lots of soft nice songs.. of course, LE is good for that too. BfP isn't something I'd listen to while sleeping.. (though I have..) But it's an awesome album.. and FtCH is awesome too.. I didn't really expect it after hearing Tori's other stuff.. but I think it's really cool that she's so diverse.. she has something for everybody, I think. :) - -- ^_~Megasus~_^ http://members.xoom.com/Megasus/ ICQ# 14241089 *~The Divine Princess of the Church of Daughter-chan!~* *~List Admin of the Xelloss-Lovers ML!~* "I've been raisin' up my hands, drive another nail in.. got enough guilt to start my own religion.." -Tori Amos "Just when you escape, you have yourself to fear.." -Tori Amos ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #75 ************************************
