Well, someone who was at the taping of the show said that when Tori told everyone to get off their asses at the beginning of Raspberry Swirl, she also added "I'm gonna save your show" or something to that effect. And of course, the folks at VH1 aren't going to allow Tori's moment of berating the show to actually air on the show. Well, not to quibble, but Winter is from "Little Earthquakes". :) Tori has published sheet music to each of her solo albums, plus a book of bee-sides. The sheet music to Winter is available in the book for "Little Earthquakes". You can find it at your friendly local store that stocks sheet music, or they should be able to order it for you if they don't have it in stock. Also, you can try online stores, such as: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com http://www.amazon.com http://www.books.com http://www.barnesandnoble.com I've ordered from the first three without any issues. I've never done business with Barnes and Noble online {there's a big store within a mile of my apartment, so why bother?}. Also, Winter was published alone. However, this can be hard to find. www.sheetmusicplus has it on and off. Further information on the published sheet music, as well as sheet music that you can find on the web, is available in the Tori Resources FAQ, available by emailing resources-faq@rmta.org and asking nicely. :) /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 10:34:05 -0800 From: Frederica Rose Subject: screw the grammies my take on the reason tori didn't get her grammies is because they are too mainstream and stupid. i mean, you have to have half a brain at least to even listen to tori, and i cannot say the same for many of the other artists. there are other good artists featured, but their music does not generally take any sort of genius to discover. also, tori's music makes a person look deep inside him/herself and most people don't want to or don't have the capacity to do so at this time for whatever reason. they do not like the way it makes them feel. that is why she is not mainstream, and that is why she will never be mainstream. i wish people would recognize tori publicly for her genius and artistry, but if she has to dumb-down to get recognition, i'd rather she remain undiscovered by those who don't understand her. i think of tori as a special treat that not everyone is able to enjoy because they cannot open themselves up. but tori is here for those who want her, so screw the grammies!!! what do they know anyway? love to all, freddie (who is not bitter in the slightest.) - -- "Do you gotta have a have a tripledecker super fudge sundae with a goddamn cherry on top?"-Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 00:28:21 -0500 From: "Erika and Alan Lewis" Subject: Thoughts on Liquid Diamonds and a teeeny gripe.... Hello all!! For a few weeks now I've been tossing around thoughts about Liquid Diamonds in my head. It all started when I saw an interview with Joseph Campell in my Myth class. In passing he mentioned that water was symbolic of the unconcious mind, and the "monsters" found in water represent the "monsters" we fight in our sub-concious as the myths work through our lives. Anyway, I think Liquid Diamonds is about the subconcious/unconcious... so here goes nothing... *...surrender then start your engines, you'll know quite soon what my mistake was, for those on horseback or dog sled you turn on at the bend in the road...* first we begin with the concious person. she surrenders herself to begin her voyage into her mind. Perhaps she's trying to figure out why she has done something a certain way and it ended up being the wrong way, and no matter what vehicle you chose to take you on your voyage into yourself, you still have to follow the road around, in this case the road into her inner self. **NOTE** when i say "she" i do not mean Tori... *...I hear she still grants forgiveness although i willingly forget her, the offering is molasses...* She knows her unconcious is willing to forgive her, but she forgot she was there. she has pushed her (the unconcious her) back so far that she's really had to search to finally realize that she can be forgiven. The molasses, well whenever here molasses i think of what i remember some southern poeple saying, your as slow as molasses, cus its so thick it takes forever to pour, so the offering (the offering being the willingness to find her unconcious) is slow like molasses. *...and you say, I guess I'm an underwater thing, so I guess I can't take it personally, I guess I'm an underwater thing, I'm liquid running, there's a sea secret in me its plain to see that it is rising, but i must be flowing liquid diamonds...* ok, this is where the song switches and the unconcious begins telling her story. She's an underwater thing, so she cant take it personally. She's the deep hidden secret we all keep inside, she can't be offended or hurt because its just simply her nature to be hidden. The liquid subconcious that runs through us, but here the woman is allowing hers to rise, allowing her 'sea secret' to rise to the surface, and on the surface when light hits the liquid it makes those sparkling diamonds scattered all over the surface. The subconcious rising makes liquid diamonds on the surface, allowing the woman to heal. *...calling for my soul, at the corners of the world, I know she's playing poker with the rest of the stragglers, calling for my soul at the corners of the world I she's playing poker and if your friends don't come to you and you know this is madness a lilac mess in your prom dress and you say, I guess I'm an underwater thing...* here we go back to the first woman. she's calling for herself at the the corners of the world because the subconcious is an ocean and the ocean reaches to far off places, it shows how distant her subconcious mind really is. She (the unconcious) is off somewhere playing poker with all the other unconcious minds in the deep oceans. I think the idea of the friends not coming back and the madness is like, if you go too deep into your mind you won't be able to come back, and your friends will no longer know you, and you'll realize its madness to go too far... as far as the lilac mess in the prom dress, i seriously think that's in the song just for sound, the words just fit there and flow. also i think that maybe the madness line represents what happens when the two sides don't reconcile, the unconcious takes over and madness ensues. then at the end you get the unconcious mind speaking again. If she lets her rise she'll see the liquid diamonds flowing on the surface and perhaps the two parts will merge and forgivness will be granted. ok... well i hope that makes sense and if you've made it this far, Thanks For Reading :) my teeny gripe... i've seen it a few times mentioned, about tori's strict catholic unbringing. just to clarify, tori did not have a strict catholic unbringing, it would be impossible for her father to be a catholic priests because catholic priests are celibate and never marry. i know its silly, but it just bothers me.... anywho.. i hope you enjoyed my musings/bablings. (im not saying that tori DOESNT deserve some recognition, she does) I watched the entire show, and i wasn't impressed by anything else besides sheryl's and shania's performances (shania looked soooo good in that corset...) i think the whole show was basicly a waste of three hours. *blah* 2. we just got digital cable, and we can't record things off the tv. i would be willing to trade bootleg tapes and special (custom-mixes) tapes of rare/live/b-side songs in exchange for a video recording of storytellers. i will also send a great big hug and thank you to the kinda lad/laddie who helps me out in this situation. And when I say last night I mean last night...I started and finished it, and barely slept, almost hyponotized by the story and the lyricism, the horror and the beauty. I know this is not an Alice Walker mailing list so I won't go on about it. But I will say this: I believe that to presume to know anything about Tori's music and lyrics one must read this book. Many people have posted interps that relate precisely to this book and for good reason. One can find the inspiration for many of her songs in its pages -- the most obvious example is her song "Blood Roses" which I will never be able to hear again without shuddering. Both Walker and Tori have somehow manged to channel the most unimaginable of injustices and turn it into something beautiful and enormously affecting. I know this is an enlightened group, so I urge you all to read it.
