Just the other day I was listening to my Bee Sides tape and I never really noticed before but both Butterfly and Black Swan have "Gumdrops and Saturdays" in them. I still can't figure out the similarities between these girls. To me, in Butterfly, "Gumdrops and Saturdays" indicates innocence, youth, and childhood memories and how, in the song, she's running as fast as she can to get these back and realizes she can't. In Black Swan, however, I can't place where innocence and youth fit into it. Black Swan, although my second favorite Bee Side, has always been a mystery to me and hence, that's what I figured the song was about. Mystery...the unknown. So I dunno...I'm lost. What do you guys think? Do you think there's any connection between these girls as far as "Gumdrops and Saturdays" are concerned? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 12:28:47 EST From: GLWNGFMNST@aol.com Subject: set lists Does anyone know where I can get set lists from the Dew Drop Inn tour as well as the ChoirGirl tour? Some of this discussion is very poignant, and some of it is somewhat oversimplified,IMHO. This is a VERY difficult subject to discuss, and I do notice some music students wincing a little bit at the comments made. Thanks, Amy, I think this is was an excellent post..I wish I knew how to discuss Tori's music on a technical level as well as on an emotional one, the way I wish I could do it for any any form. I am sure that it would open up a whole new level of admiration for her. Until this thread came up, I admit I never really thought much about how's much Tori's musical education and prodigious talent really affected her music. To me it always seemed that, with Tori, the emotion came first, and she played more on instinct than with technique. >I see elements of many of the great composers techniques, and her music is as deep as her lyrics, the way she uses certain intervals in her melodies are indicative of the word itself, that's why (someone mentioned this before) you can "feel her meaning." That's it a nutshell. It's like the way you can recognize good poetry from bad -- and this is something I do know a bit about -- without even knowing WHY you know it's good. It can only make you feel something if the rhythm is right and for the rhythm to work there has to be some knowledge of technique. >I don't even view Tori as a pop music artist, I think she has created her own genre. I think that may be why she doesn't want to be involved in the "music industry" per se. Definitely. I remember back in the LE days when you could only see SATY on VH1, and it was a totally different channel back then -- all cheesy adult contemporary. Now MTV is even scared to play her, it seems, unless it's on some late night alternative music show. So you're right, her indifference to the industry makes her, as far as I'm concerned, the most credible artist of our time. The inability to pigeonhole her music allows her the freedom to be wonderful. >Her music is as complex, well constructed, and as innovative, as that of many of the previous composers of the 16th-19th century. Mozart, although most found him to be quite entertaining, was considered to be quite strange, and was underappreciated, during his time. I will reiterate what someone has said about Tori...it will be interesting to see how she will be remembered. For good or for bad, I think more will be said about the effect of Tori's music rather than the music itself. Unfortunately, too many people may not realize they are one and the same (the medium IS the message). Gee, I wonder if the NSync mailing list has discussions like this? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 16:06:27 EST From: Heather980@aol.com Subject: In dire need of Tori Sheet Music I was wondering if anyone here knows where I could get some piano sheet music for tori's songs online and for free.?.? I was just wondering if anyone else had heard about this, or had any other information? I would appreciate it very, very much. I had a Tori dream several months ago that I wanted to share but never got a chance to, but now that I am signing off from precious-things (at least for a while anyway), I wanted to get this out to all you EWF. I don't usually post much but here goes: It was dusk and I was walking down a long road, out of town, into a city. I could tell I was in a small town but when I looked up I could see these huge, beautiful sky risers just beyond the trees. Other people around me were walking in the same direction too; all sorts of people, women with baby carriages, elderly men with canes, and children with balloons. All I can remember was feeling completely free and happy. I felt I was heading somewhere very special. Finally, I came to a clearing and there was a grassy field. Tori was standing there, dressed in a white halter top and dark blue or grey jeans. She was talking to a bunch of people who were sitting down. I think she was telling a story or something but I can't remember anything she said. I remember stopping by a tree to listen to her and when she saw me, she started walking toward me, smiling. All the while still talking and telling her story, then she gave me a big hug and held me for a long time. It was really beautiful. I know the dream was a lot more involved than this and her words really touched me but I can't remember what she said exactly. Anyway, it was my first Tori dream and I wanted to share it with all of you guys. And if anyone could help...I've been trying to cancel this mailing list for three weeks now (I can only get to the library once a week to check my mail) and its still sending me messages. The published sheet music is not available online, because that is a major infringement of copyright laws. I was aware of one site that had scans of it up, but Atlantic made them take it down -- and for good reason. That said, there are sites that do have some sheet music up. They have things that aren't published, such as bee-sides and the intros and/or bridges that aren't in the books.
