She's said it before, and no doubt she'll say it again, her songs are not a diary. Even Little Earthquakes, which was written in Diary form, was NOT a diary. >> yes! yes! yes! this is such a wonderful point. I have been struggling with this fact in my own life - you see my boyfriend is also a musician and tori has really really helped me to understand him and vice versa. They have almost exactly the same feelings about music (I won't go into Details, unless anyone wants to hear them) but like the feeling that you are just a vehicle and the music comes from somewhere else and the thing that she said on sessions about it being dangerous if she didn't have music and that music is where she sorts things out - my boyfriend has said these exact same things to me. Anyways, back to my original point - when I listen to his songs it is sometimes hard for me to listen to the lyrics because a few of them deal with love and I love you blah blah blah and I listen to them and I at first try to figure out who he is talking about and then I get upset and then I realize hey maybe he doesn't mean it literally and maybe its not even about him ... and after a while he told me what a few of the songs are about and that none of them are about women or a relationship with a woman - but alot of them really really sound that way - and some are about a relationship with a woman but not involving him ... it took me a long time to be able to figure out what you said in three sentences and I think that it also helps me to understand tori better and thats always great. :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 11:20:57 -0600 From: intella-ed@juno.com Subject: Songs for Tori to cover Personally I would love to see Tori cover these songs: Burn- The Cure How can I be sure- The Rascals A Day In the life- The Beatles Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite- The Beatles In Your Eyes- Peter Gabriel If I ever lose my Faith in you- Sting 99.9- Suzanne Vega Fly Away- Poe People are Strange- The Doors Manic Depression- Jimi Hendrix Just my two cents... Something by Kristin Hersh...probably "Your Ghost".And maybe something by Lush. Possibly "Untogether" or " ".I think only she could do these great songs justice. Usually I hate when people do covers, but I enjoy Tori's spin on things. On a side not I just want to say that you all provide such great information and all seem so kind.I haven't tried to figure out what she could have written a song about just for the fact that I don't seem to be to good at it.But all the things that you guys have offered have been quite interesting. Now I know not everyone believes this is what she's saying, but after hearing several versions, I distinctly hear the word "goat". So why would she say, You're my little goat? Little Goat? What is a baby goat? A kid. Ah Ha! The line made sense to me. "You're my kid", you are my child. But being this is my brain working and not Tori's, perhaps I'm way off base and she is really singing about the animal with udders and horns. ;) Back to your regularly scheduled email. Mary in the song Mary by Tori is the same Mary in The Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix. Well, it occurred to me that in Sweet Dreams when she says "Sweet Dreams/you say that you have them/I say that you are a liar...YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE..." Well, that seems to be referring to the song House Burning Down (1968 Electric Lady Land album) by Jimi Hendrix. I honestly am not reaching here guys. Sweet Dreams and House Burning Down deal with the SAME subject matter. They are sister songs. Also, if you havent heard her version of If 6 was 9 (another Jimi song), give it a try. It is horrible and unnerving and brings to mind thoughts of the apocalypse. I find it works very well to listen to her songs and guess that they were "inspired by" people or events (Mark, Eric, the miscarriage, even Trent Reznor and Neil Gaiman) rather than that they're "about" those people or events. Maybe Northern lad was inspired by Eric, or maybe by some random fling she had, or maybe it just flowed out of her with no conscious conection to any of those thought. But it's "about" any relationship where you figure out that you don't have enough in common, that the spark is no longer there, that you're losing a bit of yourself trying to make it work. Or it's about anything else you hear in it. It's much more interesting to interpret the song - words, music, feelings etc - with respect to your own life than to piece it apart with respect to what parts of tori's life inspired it. That said, I certainly do keep hearing in just about every song in Choirgirl bits and pieces inspired by the sense of loss after the miscarriage; but I don't think they all have to be "about" that one event even if they were clearly inspired by it. And it's not just that I know she had the miscarriage when I listen to Choirgirl; I still think Talula is about a child lost by choice (which is why I just don't get the Tornado mix; "say goodbye to a glitter girl" fits in so much better...wah), and either she was being prescient about it or it has nothing directly to do with her life. - --Abbe PS - re: tori's height.. The closest I got to Tori was after the Harborlights show in Boston in '96, when for some reason she not only saw fit to play Flying Dutchman *drool drool*, she also felt in the mood to hang out after the show and spend some serious quality time with the fans and give some 50 people each a hug before heading back ito her tour bus. I didn't look down at her feet, but she seemed about 5'4" max from my perspective. - --Abbe ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 19:19:24 -0800 (PST) From: Sarah Subject: trade questions Ok i just got interested in tori trades so i'm hoping someone can clarify a few things for me... 1.
