The message needs to be heard and recieved by those who would not ordinarily hear and recieve it. I'll bet that the people who would dance to Tori in a club love her the same as you and I. The messages need to get to some of the people watching who would exploit them. Read the last verse of "Mother," I think this verse could have something to say on the topic. ' she also talks about being estranged from herself even at times "i watch me be this other thing"... i think the song is about her uniqueness, and finding other purple to share the epxerience with... bachelorette, i think is about her freedom as a femme.... in travel, relationships, in self... again, a "doll" reference. she also makes talk of how women treat the sides of themselves that want to be free "the things you do girls, to your bachelorettes..." hugs you. take care ~~kelley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 09:16:58 +0000 From: Ken Tough Subject: Re: Album Covers Amy M Belden wrote >LE=white, UtP=light blue, BfP=darker blue, FTCH=black >Moreover, they don't dip into any colors besides those three (white, blue, >black). Someone (*pleeeease forgive me for not remembering who deserves >credit for this*) figured out that: > >LE=earth, UtP=air/wind/etc., BfP=fire, FTCH=water I'm not sure where you first heard of that, but I remember when I first struck on the idea back in mid-1996 during the DDI tour. I'd been reading about the 'Medicine Wheel'[0] and the four directions were given various characteristics... I saw the existing 3 albums in them, with only one niggle: fire ought to have been water... BfP, the south, was surely fire. WEST NORTH SOUTH WEST Element Earth Air Water Fire Colour Black White Red Yellow Season Autumn Winter Summer Spring Time Present Future Past Momentary Human Aspect Physical Body Mind Emotions Spirit Quality Introspection Knowledge/ Trust/ Illumination change/trans'n wisdom innocence enlightenment Gateway to THE BODY THE MIND EMOTIONS THE SPIRIT LE UtP BfP ??? Now things didn't fit perfectly (like the fire that ought to have been BfP), but a lot of the more detailed descriptions really made me think about the album connections. When you look at stuff like this, one tends to disregard stuff that doesn't fit, and notice the stuff that does, so it's not really so much HOW much it fits or what it REALLY means, but the fact that there's so many angles for contemplation... e.g. Spirit of the North: (UtP?) "The power of the Spirit of the North is the power of renewal and of the quickening of the spirit. It is the power of Winter when nothing appears to be growing but inwardly the Earth is gathering together her energies for the new life that is to come. It is the white snow of purity - not the self-righteous purity of the do-gooder but the purity that is a compaction of power that brings concentration and clarity of intent. It is the power that turns water to ice, the power that gives ice its strength to crush rocks into pebbles. It is the power of night when the physical is dormant but the spirit is active. It is growth wearing the cloak of rest, and new life attired in the shroud of death." Anyway, I found I could apply the various descriptions to LE -> UTP -> BfP. The Autumn -> Winter -> Summer seemed to fit with the artwork and imagery, Black -> White -> Red seemed to fit also, and also with the "darker->more ethereal-> - ->more blood" nature of the progression. The body->mind->emotions progression also made me think of the very physical->mental->sensual imagery in the music of the LE->UtP->BfP progression. UtP strikes me as nothing so much as ethereal, but with a cold sharpness or strength like the glass shards in the artwork. The music is more pure, lighter, less layered and heavy than the powerful earthy Little Earthquakes. BfP of course was hot, sweaty, tear and sweat-soaked. LE was the first physical discovery of all those things that need to break out, the gathering together of strength and bursting forth from the bonds/lessons/hurts/failures. To quote [0] again on The Spirit of the West (LE): The power of the Spirit of the West is strength and introspection. It is the power of looking within to evaluate the lessons of growth so that realisation can develop. It is the power of growth to full maturity and of the consolidation of internal structures for the period of renewal that is to come. It is the power of self-examination and of the transformation of physical experiences into spiritual realities. The colour of the Spirit of the West is BLACK, the colour of the formlessness from which all form comes. [and the little earthquake develops...and we have...] And so on and on, with the Spirit of the South (BfP) including things like: The colour of the Spirit of the South is RED, the colour of vital energy and of the life blood. So finally, the East, which is the doorway to new things, and was traditionally the last of the directions on the wheel. I saw it as a leap off into new directions and a closing of a progression. I did make comment of this to Tori, but dunno if she read it. Still, to anyone who wants to look more into the use of this "4-way-division" of all things, to find themselves or contemplate, or just read up, I will highly recommend the book that inspired my thinking: [0] The Medicine Way: A Shamanic Path to Self Mastery Kenneth Meadows, Element Books Ltd, Longmead Dorset, published in USA by Element Inc, (c)1991 ISBN 1-85230-151-1 - -- Ken Tough ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #29 ************************************
