You are not the only one who gets funny looks when you say you collect Tori CD's. Most of my friends and family think I use that as an excuse to obsess about her music (well, they may be partially right!). What's weird is that collecting music is not that unusual. There are huge records shows held on a weekly basis where people can go to find vintage and rare music items. I often ask people why they think it is normal to collect stuff from bands like Led Zeppelin, but it's strange to collect Tori's music? I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that most people either haven't heard of her or don't know enough about her to understand our passion. I mean, if someone told you that they collect memorabilia from Joe Smith of Bethesda, MD, you might think they were a little odd. I have to say (and I apologize in advance to anyone who's feelings are hurt by this) that I am getting sick of people complaining that Tori sold out on Choirgirl as well. I mean, let's face it, the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls sold out to commercial music. Anyone who has read the lyrics to the songs on Choirgirl knows that they are pure Tori. Yes, the music is different from her previous albums, but not so different that you can't recognize that it is her. Part of being a great musician is being able to grow and change as you learn new styles. It also means being somewhat influenced by other styles of music. I think that Tori was trying to get back to her roots when she made Choirgirl. Zeppelin, the Beatles, even NIN. You can a little bit of their influences throughout the album. (if any of you doubt me, listen to She's Your Cocaine and then listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) Anyway, time to climb off my soapbox. Thanx for listening! Quick background, it was a shitty day: I didn't get a job that I was up for and had just found out this morning. So I almost couldn't believe my ears when Judith walked into our stock area this evening and nonchalantly said, "Tori Amos is on the 3rd floor." "What?!?!?" "Tori is on the 3rd floor. She's checking out the New Age books. You'd better hurry." Long story short: ran up and down 4 floors to no avail, and on my last pass to the registers, there she was. I politely waited for about 30 seconds (it seemed like an eternity), introduced myself, shook her hand, and she made out this neat little "To Mike" put a heart, and signed her name on a receipt. It was just way too cool. If I had some foresight I would have had her sign her beautiful picture in Kevyn Aucoin's MAKING FACES, but I wasn't thinking straight at the time. Anyway, I'm just so psyched. It was an honor. Now back to the jobhunting... And she named the lead singer of the Cocteau Twins as one of her faves, and she said her favorite song was Treasure. Well, I was searching for that song, hoping for a soundclip, on CDNOW. Well, according to CDNOW there's no song called Treasure, but there is an album called Treasures-- so I clicked on it, and what do you know but two of the titles on the album are "Persephone" and "Pandora"! People appreciate that and most people can smell a rat from the selling out of their music. For example, I used to be a huge Verve Pipe fan way back in the day when they were only popular in Michigan. Well, needless to say, they wanted to break into the world of success and lost their basic fan group because their music wasn't true to them. Tori has already broken out into the mainstream. She signed with Atlantic, has a contract, has MTV support her . . . and she's still the same Tori we love. I don't think there could ever be a problem because she's already established. becky ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 08:42:30 EST From: "glytter grrl" Subject: Re: tori popularity >Back in May when I was at the Fillmore, in line for Tori tickets. this girl on >a passing bus, asked whoever answered what we were doing there, said that we >must be kidding, that Tori sucks>>>>> This brought back a funny memory for me. back in may, my friend nicole(kinda likes tori..she was keeping me company and better chances on a lower ticketbastard line number) and i were waiting for tix for her july detroit show, and there was prolly 10 other people waiting with us. we were all chatting and stuff, and this one group of girls, and i know you know what kind they were. all had the same perfect hair, same perfect $100+ contempo casual/gap clothing on, you know...the cloned ones...and they asked this other girl and guy who they were waiting for and of course they said tori, and the four girls just flipped..."like oh my, she so weird. she is all like man-hating and total lesbian love and all that. how could even want to see her in concert!" needless to say the other people in line(even nicole) plus more that had lined up, all just kinda turned and looked at them. each and every one of us had some sort of tori "stuff" on. they left! no one said anything to them, just looked...& they left. she's not obscure, and she is hated, but it's because people are too mainstreamed to what sells and too ignorant and blind to what other people think. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 15:56:08 -0500 From: "trent, i am a wolf but i like to wear sheep's clothing" Subject: How i got into tori... someone (Maura Deedy) brought up a great thread on the ToriToriTori mailing list that i just had to respond to....though it was not appropriate for that list's submission parameters (though the moderator is very cool in my book) i felt it needed to be posted SOMEWHERE! = ) It's dorky but it is the way it happened. This is a great thread!!! Okay, it was 1990 and I was totally embroiled in the whole Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Madonna thing....while watching MTV (undoubtedly waiting for the Cold Hearted video to play) I saw this red-headed freak rolling around in box....it of course was Tori in Silent all these Years. I quickly dismissed her as a flake and moved on. 1994 and I had matured in my musical tastes....a chance purchase of the Closer cd single changed my life. I became totally enraptured by Nine Inch Nails--the music that defined my life for a long time. Having heard that Trent Reznor sang on some cd by some Tori Amos i searched it out and purchased Under the Pink. the song was wonderful...but that was the only song i ever listened to on the album. until....listening to cds...under the pink was in my cd player....pretty good year came on and broke my heart. i just heard that song and was reduced to mush. my best friend was an avid Toriphile from the beginning and he is the one who really introduced me to Tori's music. He bombarded me with demos, remixes, outtakes, b-sides (Mary i remember distinctly) and then took me to a concert. That was when you could wait for Tori and actually MEET HER. I met this woman who looked in my eyes and placed her hand on my arm and said "hello, and how are you?".....and that was all it took. she posed with me in a very blurry picture (which i still cherish) and i was hooked. going back to little earthquakes in 1995 was this immense revelation that literally opened my eyes. China, Precious Things, Winter, Little Earthquakes and >sniff sniff< Tear in your Hand....these songs called to me and called me friend. They opened their arms and embraced me and promised to be there for me if i ever needed them. And they have....repeatedly when i needed them to speak to me, through me or for me they have. Boys for Pele came out and i strayed a bit....i delved into the darker gothic/industrial (NIN, Manson, Stabbing Westward, Klank, PIG, PWEI) and shelved Tori....but not for long. Hey Jupiter, when it was released, slapped me in the head and brought me back to my senses. I was one of the many waiting just before midnight the day that From the Choirgirl Hotel came out....and i was not disappointed. and here i am. looking back at how i came to know tori and her music seems dorkily poignant.....but i don't regret a thing....except that if i had opened my eyes sooner, i would have THE SINGLES from the LE era....but that's life. i embrace her music as it has embraced me...and can only look forward to more wonderful music in the future. Past the Mission Pretty Good Year these were the "girls" that brought me to Tori and I will be forever grateful. trent o - O - O - O - O - O - O - O - o . o o . o o O "What's so O o amazing about o o Really Deep Thoughts?" o . o o . Thanks to a certain trader here, I won't name her because I don't want her to get flooded with e-mails, but I've received a CD of Highlights from the Sunrise show. The kewl thing is, this person also recorded soundcheck. During soundcheck Tori is play what I think is probably a new song! I really pray that this new song is on the LIVE ALBUM. TOri did say once that there might be a few new tracks done in soundchecks. All I can say about the song is that it's kind of a mix of Siren and Spark but a little softer. At one point she even goes into Siren... The lyrics are fairly hard to make out, but you can hear the lines No angel (I know this isn't big, but the way she says this, it just sends something up your spine) Turn to me Turn to me Turn to me Something in the way you ??? I really haven't had time to transcribe all the lyrics because although it is fairly good quality, it is hard to understand Tori. You can tell this is a demo version also because she plays the song for a LOOONG time. So, can someone tell me if this might just be some kind of eighties Lita Ford cover ;-) or do you all think this is something new? The songs from this series were released on a cd called 'On Children'. I have a copy of this cd now, so here's some more information: Title: On Children Artist: Astrid Seriese & Martijn van Agt (most cd-shops only mention Astrid Seriese) Label: Brigadoon Vocal (a division of Double T Music) CD-number: BIS 024 Distribution: Sony Music There are 18 songs on the cd (6 instrumentals), only four are covers of Tori Amos songs, the rest was written by the performing artists: 1.Horses - (1:50) 10.Horses (instrumental) [slow] - (2:21) 13.Beauty Queen - (0:51) 14.Horses (instrumental) [fast] - (2:15) I have MP3 (24Kb/sec) and RealAudio (16Kb/sec) soundfiles of all four tracks available for download. Nowhere near cd-quality, but good enough for a first impression: http://www.stack.nl/~rvm/hondberg.htm (a direct link) or visit http://www.stack.nl/~rvm/tori.htm and click on 'Feature' I have uploaded cd-quality MP3's of Horses and Beauty Queen (not the instrumentals) to ftp.tal.org At the moment they are in the 'incoming' directory, but maybe they're moved to another section by now. On my site you can also find more information about the CD, the documentary, Astrid Seriese & Martijn van Agt. You'll also find some links to online cd-stores there, which offer this cd at a reasonable price. These are all dutch stores, but they can ship to other countries (and because it isn't an import cd here, these stores are probably bit cheaper than non-dutch stores). If there are any subscribers living near Eindhoven (in the Netherlands). These two stores both have a copy of the cd available.
