It doesn't seem like they did it again, I just wondered if there were a special set of circumstances.. ? My darlings, Has anyone seen the weather reports about the big blizzard of '99 in the Great Lakes region? I'm right in the middle of that here in NW Indiana. They canceled school today and it was the first day back from Christmas break! The roads are plowed and everything, but... I can't open my front door! THE HORROR! So anyhoo I figured it was time I make my occasional rambly post. Actually what inspired it was Robyn's comments on Schindler's List. I love that movie, and I distinctly remember the part about Oskar bitching about the cold. I'm a German student and I just love German accents and I adore the way he says "I'm fach-ing freezing!" My best friend and I used to say that all the time when it was cold. But I actually have some valid questions here. In the January issue of SPIN magazine (the Year in Music one with Shirley Manson {my other red-headed goddess!} on the cover), on page 38, they have an article of sorts called "Little Darlings" comparing two new artists, Shelby Starner and Britney Spears. This girl Shelby is 14, and she looks really interesting. "Something about the way she sounds reminds you of Tori Amos (down to the way she straddles her piano stool)." Does anyone know anything about this girl? Does she sound like Tori? And even if she doesn't... is she any good? I personally have trouble comparing anyone to Tori. When people say Fiona is like Tori I just want to show them how different they are! Tori is like scalloped potatoes and spaghetti and biscuits and honey; Fiona is like ice cream and Oreos. I mean they're both good, but let's think about this seriously here. I suppose what I'm trying to say is if you know who she is and she sounds nothing like Tori let's not bash her, because she didn't make the comparison. Moving on. Has anyone ever read the story "A Dill Pickle" by Katherine Mansfield? I think it may have in some way influenced Putting the Damage On, and if it didn't, it should have. It's a beautiful story about a woman who runs into her former lover in a coffee shop and she remembers all the hurtful little things he did to her... but as they're talking he kind of sucks her back in and she starts thinking about the happiness they had, and how cute he is... basically, he still looks pretty. But the main connection, the one that did it for me, is the opening paragraph: And then, after six years, she saw him again. He was seated at one of those little bamboo tables decorated with a Japanese vase of paper daffodils. There was a tall plate of fruit in front of him, and in a way she recognized immediately as his "special" way, he was peeling an orange. He's playing with an orange rind! :oD Everyone should read this story because it's beautiful and bittersweet and I love it. I wrote a paper on it and everything. So my Christmas was very Tori-ful. I got the Complete Videos, and the All These Years biography (twice... from my sister and my best friend!) and the Crucify ep, finally. The best part is I finally have a vcr so I can watch my Tori videos at any time of the day or night! Woo-hoo! Oh! I forgot! My sister--a natural redhead--got me grapefruit soap! I put it on my list because I can never find it here and she found some pink grapefruit shower gel at the Body Shop in some very distant town. How exciting! I can smell like Tori now. I was curious about the truck in the American Cornflake Girl video. I asked my dad, and he said it was a '54 Chevy Six-Window. I think it was Chevy, that is. Does anyone know anything else about this? We went to Old Navy (where I got a shirt for $4!) that very night, and they had one of those exact same trucks in the middle, only it was dark blue and it was full of shirts instead of girls. The CG video is so great, it cracks me up. I don't mean that in a condescending way, I really love it. When the girls whip out their lipsticks... and how the guy is being stewed and he's cutting the vegetables... how great is that? And Tori's cute little cut-offs. I just love it. I love all of the videos, actually. The LE ones move a bit slowly for my tastes, though... does anyone agree? It's novel and everything but for me it gets tedious. They are, however, beautiful. I had never seen a lot of these videos before. I *love* Talula. When she breaks out that blow torch.... genius. I could just eat her up. Is this cabin fever? If you've read this far you deserve a medal or something. It's a sad day for the English language when MTV's Say What? can't decipher between the possessive and contraction forms of your and you're. As in "Your hiding underneath the smoke in the room." Indeed, Natalie, what's up with that? Lots of Love, Sara/Mrs. Beck Hansen let your naked goose out! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 05:11:28 -0600 From: The Great Gatsby Subject: Re: Tori MP3s & CD-Rs A friend told me they had a cd player in their home stereo system that could play mp3s (I'd never heard of such an animal...no idea whether this is true or not), but yes, mp3s can only be played on something like a computer that is able to run the program necessary to decode the compression. There are programs out there that will convert mp3s into the audio tracks a cd player can read. The down side of "unmaking" the mp3s is that (I think this is the number) about 500ish mp3s will fit on a cd, whereas only 74 minutes of audio data will fit on a cd if you make them into regular cd audio files. The up side, of course, is that you can play them on any cd. R ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 12:03:14 EST From: "glytter grrl" Subject: The Girl's In Circles Heelo all. I also love the cornflake girl video... i laughed out loud when i saw the guy being stewed in that big old pot, and had to rewind it to see it again. :) i agree that the LE vids are slow... actually, before the compilation video was released i had a bootleg tape of all of tori's videos, but they went in chronological order. and watching all the LE vids back to back was rather dull... i'm thankful for the mixed-up order on the new tape. i also kinda have this feeling that tori should re-do some of the old LE vids, especially winter... before i saw it i had envisioned a whole storyline thing going along with that song, and it would have been really cool. but oh well. i love tori anyway. :) - -megan- http://members.aol.com/AstroKitty/Tori.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 20:11:42 EST From: ToriLips@aol.com Subject: Re: fanatic? hi all, i was wondering if anyone knew when MTV is gonna air the Fanatic episode with Tori (it was taped in december right?). i definitely do not want to miss it! thanks to anyone who knows! ~*~ jenni ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 18:15:40 EST From: kmfelicetti@juno.com (Kristen M Felicetti) Subject: LE Videos(Re: snowbound) >I love all of the videos, actually. "China" is a little tedious I think. But the concept of China and some of the shots are amazing like when she plays the stone piano and especially that end shot when it's her becoming part of the stone wall. "Winter" and "Silent All These Years" are the same way I think, they can get slow(I don't wan't to use boring cause that's not true) but there's definitely some really cool parts. I LOVE all of "Crucify" though. The ending especially with all the dancing Toris is so clever. ~~Kristen ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. She explains why they did two videos - it was something to do with Atlantic not liking the European video. Actually Tori says she has no idea what the European video really is supposed to be about! A terrible horrible no good very bad thing. %^). Three quick questions: 1. What date (or approximate date) was Tori's wedding? 2. And what date (again, or app. date) did she lose the baby? 3. When did choirgirl start being recorded? It's for a school assignment. We had to choose a biography that the person had a number of turning points in their life. I opted to profile Tori instead of reading a 500 page book on Anastasia Romanov that I mentioned before. My slacker tendencies have prevailed, after all.
