I was at Fred Meyer (in Northern Oregon) the other day, and just decided to look and see if they might have the Cruel/RS single.... really not expecting that they would. Didn't have it in with albums like they usually do, so I wandered over to the Singles section, where they never put her stuff.....and what do I see? Not only the Cruel/RS single, but at least five copies of every single that been released for FtCH. Talk about shock.... they never have anything good there. So I got the single. I didn't see much difference in Cruel, but I love that song, so I liked this remix. The two remixes of RS are ok, but listening to the Ambient Raspberry Swirl while you're home alone and it's gloomy and dark in your apartment and you don't feel well anyway... isn't a good idea :) At least for me. Thanks for that, woj. I never checked into his background enough to get any specifics, as I'd done long ago with Matt Chamberlain. I'd heard he played around in a number of Bay area jazz outfits and was quite respected; and in fact, before the Newark, N.J., show I was talking to a good friend of his as he picked up his guest list tickets who knew Jon from out there and was quite enthusiastic about what a great player he is, and who mentioned that he almost always played acoustic bass with the bands out there. It was funny to me that for that N.J. show Jon played the acoustic bass not at all. Tori said in an interview (one of the early tour radio interviews, I believe) that Justin Meldal-Johnsen was busy touring with Beck. She mentioned on the choirgirl promo video interview that Matt brought Jon into the picture. I have no idea where they might have previously crossed paths. I have been reading this truly terrific list for quite a while now, but have yet dared to offer up anything. But I feel as if I have a truly Legit question to ask. I am not very saavy on these things, so forgive me if this is a "given". Is there a specific reason that Tori has done both a European and US version of a few of her videos? Is it to satisfy the insatiable desire of her EWF for "more Tori stuff", or is it because there is a different "acceptance level" in the US or Europe, or possibly, none of the above? I have been curious about that since purchasing the compilation video. Feel free to reply in private if you so desire. I am also curious, how many of you out there are musicians, or music majors? I don't know how many people know this or not, but the UK bases their charts ENTIRELY on single sales, and nothing on radio. In the US, the Billboard charts (the most referred) are done based on reported airplay from nationwide radio stations, as well as store shipments of singles and albums (not necessarily sales, but shipments to stores, which are in essence sales from distributors). The UK chart is made only of store single sales, so they put MUCH more emphasis on an artists single releases. There are also some silly rules they use to sell with, like you can only have 20 minutes worth of music on a CD single, 2 tracks (I think) on a cassette single, and 2 tracks on a 45" single. And you can have a maximum of 3 single releases in any format counting towards chart placement. (whether this is 3 cd single, a tape, cd and 45", or a tape and 2 cd singles, or any mix doesn't matter, max of 3). The market there is also a little different. In the US, your album sales mainly determine success, where in the UK it's a good chunk of both, but that's mainly because in the US you can have a "hit" on the radio that doesn't actually have a single out anywhere and it'll get on the billboard charts, but in the UK, a song can be played on the radio 24/7 and the UK charts won't give a rat's ass. (stupid idea if you ask me, but hey). (to my knowledge this is all correct, or at leastt it was last time I checked.) ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #424 *************************************
