I don't know how that happened, since I am sure I only sent it once. I wanted to back up The Mermaid in defense of chain record stores. Not that I think chain record stores are particularly defendable, but I worked in one for more than a year and I know what happens. I worked at the Wherehouse, and we had a little more leeway (not a lot) as to what we could carry. The original complaint mentioned that the sections weren't organized. What makes you so sure that was the fault of the employees. Record chains are notorious at understaffing their crews, and it's more often the shopper who picks something up out of curiosity, decides they don't like it, and then returns it -- to the wrong place. I was appalled at a) how many customers didn't bother putting things back where they found them and b) how many customers could not even locate the band they were looking for along an alphabetical row -- matching a name on a CD to a name on a bin card was impossible for some people to do. I became fairly convinced that the literacy rate for people who shop in malls is roughly 15%. Anyway, when shoppers get things out of order (or worse, when the inventory folks come, and get things out of order!), it can take a long time before the staff runs out of 'projects' which have been assigned to them by Corporate, and runs out of potential shoplifters to chase, to get enough time to re-alphabetize the store. Imagine how long it would take YOU, even if you didn't have other work to do. All that said, there is a lot to be said for special ordering things. If you special order something, almost any record store can get it for you as long as it's something that is a) still in print and b) not a bootleg. Most stores can get something to you within the week. AND, I have to say that the Sam Goody in the mall in downtown Santa Rosa has often had things that the Wherehouse in the same mall, which is staffed with Tori freaks, didn't carry. :) The Talula singles, the songbooks -- and many other things. I know people who have made some rare finds there, as well as Best Buy and other really low-end "music" stores, because they get things shipped to them, and their customers don't buy them so they just sit, and sit and sit... I found some out of print Kate Bush singles that way. For $2! Record stores are not perfect places, but even the mall stores can become useful resources if you know how to use them. I was just thinking, you know how Tori said that she's sort of at a crossroads point at the moment, as to what her direction is going to be in the future (Wall of Sound interview)? I was playing "Past the Mission" today and had a thought about it. If memory serves me, there was some discussion of a Tori quote which might be relevant to the song. Richard will have to cite this quote for sure; it may've been the Hot Press '94 article, but I know in it Tori said something about "and people call me sacreligious because I sing about giving God a blow job!" That's the gist of the quote anyway, but I remember people wondering what song it was...I think it's PtM now, because she sings "Everyone wanted something from him/I did too but I shut my mouth." Not to be crass here, I was just thinking that could be a likely reference. I'm sorry if this was offensive to anybody, I just remembered the quote whilst at the piano and thought that there might be some form of relevance...I don't know how old the thread about the quote is or anything, but I thought that might have something to do w/ the song...
