I thought I'd read something... Richard? Tori did very specifically say so at least once (specifically, as in "'The Wolf' is Eric Rosse"). I'm away from home at the moment and can't dig through my archive of articles and interviews, but I do remember that the interviewer asked her why she called him that, and she coyly answered, "You'll have to ask him" or words to that effect. Personally, "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)" by Meatloaf runs through my head. You know, the spoken part at the beginning: "On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?" "Will he offer me his mouth?" "Yes." "Will he offer me his teeth?" "Yes." "Will he offer me his jaws?" "Yes." "Will he offer me his hunger?" "Yes." "Again...will he offer me his hunger?" "Yes." "And will he starve without me?" "Yes." "And does he love me?" "YES! Yes. On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?" "Yes." "I bet you say that to all the boys." But I don't know for certain that this is where she got it. I don't want to start any Toriesque urban legends here. It's just my own guess-timation since the song was so popular around '82-'84, only a few years before she met Eric. So, the big question of her current tour has been, can she pull off another great show when backed by a live band? At Starplex Amphitheatre Sunday night, the answer was a resounding yes, although not in every instance. Guitarist Steve Caton, percussionist Matt Chamberlain and bassist Jon Evans were playing loud and strong amid swirling lights and fog when Amos entered and bowed to her rabid fans. She then went to her throne, the piano bench, and kicked off a strong set with `Precious Things' and `God' before really settling into the groove with `Black-Dove (January)' . The band added a big rhythmic clamor that was refreshing, but often made it difficult to recognize the songs until Amos starting banging on the 88s, or in some cases, until she started singing. A new version of the alluring `Putting the Damage On' was stunning, and the new sound also worked for `The Waitress,' `Iieee' and `She's Your Cocaine' - -- to which she added an instrumental snippet from Black Sabbath's `Sweet Leaf' -- but it was not so effective on `Jackie's Strength' and `Horses,' songs better served when accompanied only by Amos' introspective voice and soft-to-furious piano playing. She sang the a capella rape confessional `Me and a Gun' more powerfully than she ever has (and that's saying a lot), but some audacious audience members nearly destroyed its electricity by screaming "We love you" and "Toreee" throughout the song. The highlight was `Cruel' in which she theatrically pantomimed wringing a towel and having her hands tied behind her back. At other times, she played with one hand on the grand piano and one on the synthesizer behind her. Even with the new additions, there was never any doubt that Amos was the one in control. She would signal her sound people to change effects and reverb with giant hand motions, as if she were a conductor orchestrating the whole event with her baton. Irish band The Devlins opened the show, and although it took them a few songs to warm their jangly guitar alternarock to the audience, they hit a nice stride at the end of the set that `almost' made you want to hear more, except that you knew the real treat, Amos, was yet to come. Give it back, Daddy's down preaching back and to himself, keep it just between us." By the way, I wanted to say that I think this song is the third in the Horses trilogy ... Tori always said she'd make a third. The first, of course, is Winter, the second is Horses. But in the beginning she sings "for those on horseback," just like the scenes in Horses. I also think it relates to SATY -- "can he bring me those jeans"/"And what if I'm a mermaid in these jeans of his." I mean, she's talking about underwater-ness and liquid and flowing in "Diamonds" and being a mermaid in "SATY" but -- I think that when she sings 'can he bring me those jeans" she's talking about THOSE jeans, the ones from SATY, back when she was wishing "boy you best pray that I bleed real soon" instead of having this horrible miscarriage happen to her. Anyway, those connections just make sense to me. And, just because, I have to point out yet another lyrical similarity between one of Tori's songs and a hard rock song. In "Take to the Sky" she sings "And my priest says.../And my doctor says." I heard Blue Murder's (remember them?) "Jelly Roll" the other night, which is a pretty keen song, and the chorus goes "I don't need no doctor/I don't need no priest." I know a lot of songs mention these figures because they're so prevalent in our lives, but I was just struck by it. Anyway... :) Beth - -- "Those who feel the breath of sadness, sit down next to me Those who find they're touched by madness, sit down next to me Those who find themselves ridiculous, sit down next to me." Atlantic was taking pictures for the new live album..they took a great picture of Steve drinking his wine.... matt chamberlain was going nuts on Waitress.....amazing!! Steve almost messed up on Talula, but he caught himself and tori noticed..she goes, "your having to much fun" while still singing..... I thought the lead singer of Unbelievable truth has a really great voice...I really enjoyed their music...Landslide was the first song, and it was really good..i think if i had there album i would have enjoyed it bettter.... When tori sang Merman (which was the first time i heard it, I only read the lyrics) The lights suddenly went beserk..and she goes, "Marcel is everything ok...if I get electricuted, well it ok because" ..then she sang a short intro to the song, how she will see Marianne, Matthew ( the boy from Wyoming) and her little girl....i nearly cried my eyes out..and I'm not the emotional type....Winter and Merman were powerful songs..... i loved the song God, "you dropped the bomb on me, jesus" Many, many highlights....I heard it once in philly sneak preview show... I met a wonderful friend at the concert. He had pictures of him and tori, told me places he visited, and kept me entertain while standing in line....i went by myself, because nobody wanted to wait in the freezing cold to see tori :[ For future people "watch out for cornflake girls..i didn't see to many guy cornflakes, they like to cut in line and cause havoc" ;] take care, finney ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #390 *************************************
