OH Hey there everyone... This is my first time posting, but I'll just make a brief introduction and pose my question to the masses. My name is Kimberly, and I'm a Toriphile.... (Toriphiles Anonymous, anyone?????) I was exposed to Tori at the tender age of 18, and after buying the Crucify single, I was hooked and have been for 4 or 5 years. I have now accumulated quite a collection of CDs, but have never been to a concert. This brings me to my question: Tori played at the Palace Theater in Columbus, Ohio, a few years ago; however, I missed it. I was wondering if any central Ohio Toriphiles could respond to me privately if they know anything about the last concert. I'd really be interested in knowing the setup of the venue, and if there was a meet and greet. I've heard that the Palace is a great place to see a concert. If anyone has any other input, please let me know. Hope to see you all November 29th..... Some thoughts about the Meet&Greet discussion: Those events really are something extraordinarily special. When I remember reports correctly (I unfortunately did never participate myself at that time) it started out during Tori's first big tour in 1992, when she personally talked to the few fans that waited for her after the shows and when she asked them how they felt about the shows. I even heard reports that fans have been invited to her dressing room or in her tour bus for a couple of minutes. When the number of fans increased, some of her friends (e.g. Neil) asked Tori not to do it like this anymore, because it would be too exhausting for her after the shows. She needed to keep her energy for the many shows she did and she needed to relax after the shows. So today's Meet&Greets (I do not know how this very nice expression came up) are some kind of compromise between Tori's desire to meet her fans and communicate with them and Tori's need to recover after shows and to look after her security, because there are always lunatics out there. I do not know when the pre-show Meet&Greets started - I guess this was when people found out that it was way too crowded after the shows already and decided to try to wait for her already when she arrives at the venues. In my opinion, Tori likes to see her fans and to communicate with them. But she is also very concerned about her Ears With Feet: - - In the end of an Internet chat, she asked her fans to look after each other before and during shows. - - It has been reported that she asked people that she saw many times before shows whether they could afford it and how they manage to travel around so much. - - When she realized that some guys from Europe came to the U.S. for a couple of shows, she asked whether they were ok and whether they had friends in the States to look after them while they were there. - - I have personally seen Joel ask a fan that he knows from several shows during a general admission show where he was standing in one of the first rows to watch out for other fans who might get sick. Joel asked the fan to wave to him whenever he would notice somebody who did not seem to be ok. I am afraid that Meet&Greets would never happen again, if Tori would come to the conclusion that this would be too dangerous for her fans because of the crowds being too big or behaving too rude. And Meet&Greets, I think, would definitely be over for at least a very long while, if ever some kind of accident would happen there. Therefore, I think that everything is good that helps to prevent bad things from happening at those occasions. The idea of numbering the arriving people and approaching the barricades in order of the numbers is such kind of a thing. And I believe that Tori would appreciate it if it really worked well and if it helped to ensure that everyone is treated fair. Toriphiles mostly seem to be nice and wonderful people. I have noticed somebody handing out sweets before a Meet&Greet and on a very hot day somebody organized and distributed cold water for everybody waiting for Tori. With the fans of many other artists, events like a Meet&Greet would never be possible and go completely out of hands - unless there were much more security people than just Joel and Steve. Everyone participating in a Meet&Greet should keep this in mind. But I also know the feeling that you get if you have a certain reason why you want to see and talk to Tori on a specific day. And when you were at the venue very early in order to make sure that you are one of the first persons to get there. And when you notice that there are already way too many people there before the barricades have been set up. Fortunately, on the day that I have in mind - and where no numbering system was in place -, the local security guy who finally set up the barricades remembered who he first saw at the place and made sure that those people were able to get next to the barricades. I am really not entitled to give any kind of advice here. But this is what I would hope that everyone participating in a Meet&Greet should think about: - - Nobody has the right to see Tori. Meet&Greets are something special, something extra. - - The entire thing is not only about meeting Tori. It is also about meeting other Toriphiles and being a part of it and making it happen at all. It is about being fair to each other and celebrating our common passion. Toriphile spirit. Ears With Feet. - - Keep in mind that you might not be able to talk to Tori. - - Keep in mind that you might be able to somehow communicate with Tori, even if you are not in the first row at the barricade. - - Try to find out who arrived before you, talk to them and make sure that they can get to the barricades right before you. - - Talk to the people arriving right after you and make sure that they accept that they will get to the barricades right after you. If somebody does not seem to accept this, look for support by others who can help you to explain why being fair is so important. - - When Tori arrives, obey to the rules that Steve (or Joel) announces. And tell others to do so as well. Help to keep everything calm and under control. - - You may want to help to pass things on to Tori to have them signed and to pass them back to the owner - unless the items are too big or too sharp or in any other way dangerous so that Joel might get worried. - - If you are able to talk to Tori, try to keep in mind that others probably did not get a chance to do so and that you are somehow representing them as well. Feel that this is a privilege. - - If you are too far away, accept that you will not be able to talk to Tori. Do not be disappointed. You may be able to make friends with other Ears With Feet. And you will see a wonderful show, which already is a privilege. Think of the people that are able to talk to Tori as representing you as well. I am sorry if I sound like giving advice. These are just my thoughts about how the Meet&Greets could stay what they are, unique events of sharing our common passion with other fans and with the artist - the source of all this - herself. And I am aware that it is very easy for me to say this, because the Meet&Greets over here in Europe are usually much easier. For the pre-show Meet&Greets, it is normally not a problem for everybody who arrives there before Tori to briefly communicate with her. But with Tori's increasing popularity this might already not be true anymore during the next tour. Everybody enjoy 'your' shows, Eric (with a 'c') ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 21:54:37 -0400 From: "strange as angels" Subject: Oooh.. first post ever!
