The ticket is - Section: Right, Row: P, Seat: 9 This is about 14 rows back from the stage in the right section and seat 9 is closer to the center aisle. Please e-mail me if interested! So I was reading my last note on this show, and I was not having a good night...but I know I'm not the only one who felt this show was lacking. I just watched it again, and while I was sitting there, I was thinking that here are these five people who obviously have stories to tell, so why didn't MTV let them tell them? I mean, it was cool to have the fans tell Tori's story, but first off, you can't squash this extraordinary woman's story into a half hour, and issues such as rape and miscarriage into soundbites. Second, it was obvious these people were Toriphiles...esp, oh god, forgive me, I can't remember his name...I wanna say Matt? The guy with the braids? His last quote summed up exactly what the show SHOULD have been. Y'know, where he said that if Tori played on the moon, he'd go to the moon? It was like "EXACTLY!" That and where Tori talked of her miscarriage, barely holding back the tears, were the most poignant parts of the show for me, but just the way it was spliced together--I don't remember who said it, I think it was on the Dent, about the lightning fast editing...there was no time to digest, and in all honesty, not that much to digest in the first place. And I'm sorry, but I'm still really upset that MTV would do a show on Tori but not play her videos. I mean, yeah, once or twice. What is that? Someone said that Tori doesn't need her videos played because of her fan base based on touring and whatnot, but that's not the point to me...it's the fact that as much as Tori's been popping up on the channel lately, WHERE ARE THE VIDEOS? It seems sorda give and take there. Would it take so much for them to play "Jackie's Strength" where more than just Toriphiles would see it? I thought things would change when they made such a fuss over the vid for "Spark", but they played it for three weeks every so once in a while, and then I just think it insults the artist and the viewer sitting at home is all. It's hypocritical. I'm hoping "Revue" may shed more light into the whole situation, but for a show called the Tori Philes, it was sorda riding the line. That's all I wanted to say, really. So *ahem* me all you want, ladies. I was just stating my opinion. So, I've had a few experiences with this but my parents somewhat respect that Tori and her music are important to me. I bought the huge poster with Tori sitting on a white, cushiony bed with her legs spread a bit. My step-dad said that she probably likes to show people that area and that's all she good for. Okay. I just laughed. My mom has recently realized what the internet is all about and when she came to the home page of Yahoo, she saw an advertisement for RAINN, so, knowing I'm interested, she went to see what it was all about. She asked me about Tori being raped and if she used it as a slogan to get fans. I said, no, of course not, she just donates her money to a good cause like all good celebreties should. I explained to her what happened and that she was raped in the mind as well as physically, just sans penetration. She started laughing wildly because she, like all clever americans, can only figure out one meaning to the word "rape" and no more. Which pisses me off. Like what happened to Tori is minimized because penetration didn't occur. Forget about the mental stripping and knife being held to her. That's just not important. So, how do you explain what happened to her as serious to folks that just laugh at it? I don't know. So, those are my stories. becky ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 10:32:54 +0000 From: Ken Tough Subject: Re: another Zeppelin connection Beth Winegarner wrote: >>From Led Zeppelin, "Whole Lotta Love:" >"You need coolin', baby, I'm not foolin'" >and of course Tori has her song "Cooling" -- now, this is not a term I >normally hear people use -- "you need cooling" or "this is cooling." So I >figure there's gotta be some kind of Zeppelin reference there. Whole Lotta Love was the first thing I thought about when I heard Tori was doing a song called Cooling, but it wasn't 'til it came out as a B-side that I recently spent a lot of time searching for some connection between the two songs. In the end, I feel sure Cooling is a response to WLL, but I couldn't find anything specific in the lyrics or music to convince myself of the link. Still, it did inspire me to look deeper into the complete Zep lyrics and try and connect them to Tori songs. No luck there either, but I did come up with the idea that what we really need is a "concordance" of various artists work, as well as Tori's songs. A concordance is something that usually comes from the literary field. It's a sort of cross reference of all the important words in an opus of work, and how those words relate to each other. For example, you might pick up on "water", and find all references to water in Zep's work. You'll find that water and cathedrals appear close together in "Ballad of LLandmore" [no, just kidding, but you get the picture]. (Try 'snow'.) Anyways, it's an old concept that's pretty much overtaken by intelligent search engines, so what we really need is a concordance-oriented search engine which is fed with all known Tori influences: Joni, Jimi, Zeppelin, Beatles, Alice Walker, ... The reason I had such a strong reaction to this post was because this topic has been covered in the past, not just here, but on the local D.C. Tori list Purple People, and seeing the level of rancor expressed about all this tells me that some people seem to feel that if you ever talked with Tori, you've had your chance--never talk to her again and let other people who've never spoken with her have *their* chance. I wanted to address that idea and to say that some balance is desirable. If Tori never saw any familiar faces at shows she would be seriously thrown for a loop. I'm sorry some folks had bad experiences with people who'd been going to many shows. I try to be aware that some folks really *need* to talk to Tori about some important things, and try not to get in the way of that. (i was a little paranoid after taping the show that they would try and make us all look extremely obsessive and psychotic...this, they did not do) the one qualm i did have with the way they edited it was how they took some comments out of context...but of course that can be expected with any kind of interview like that one. thanks bunches to all you guys and gals that said sweet stuff 'bout me and everyone else that was on ultrasound...i hope to see you at some more shows this year! hugs and faerie dust ~~*lisa*~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 17:05:58 EDT From: RainnFaeri@aol.com Subject: Offer to those who attended the September 26 San Diego show To those of you who attended the San Diego show... My good friend's dad was on a business trip in San Diego when this show took place, and in his room was a reallyyy nice handbill. He brought it home and my friend gave it to me. After the generousity I've experienced at the Rochester, NY show last August 6, I feel it's my turn. :-) If you'd like this handbill, the first person to e-mail me gets it I would have to say. The main picture on the handbill is the new '98 picture with Tori in a zip-up sweatshirt-type thing, and it's zipped down a bit. She's looking to the left and is wearing a black choker. The handbill has info on how to get tix, and says "Open Air Theatre - San Diego State University - 1998 Season." All I ask is that you pay for shipping...I would volunteer it but I'm a little low on cash now due to my private voice lessons at the local arts center. ($16 for a half an hour! ugh!) Btw, if anyone remembers about William giving me that painting at the Rochester show - that was MY William on Ultrasound! The wonderful guy who gave me that beautiful picture...*big smile* I also met Lisa at that show...she was so sweet!!! I was screaming when I saw them on Ultrasound! Hi guys... I was reading through the reviews on the dent about the phoenix concert, and I saw that Tori had said she wasn't having a good day, and she would tell people later if they asked... Did she say anything at the concert last night? Does she seem to be doing better now? I'm worried about her. Anyway, Robert Plant does it, too. I've heard some old Led Zeppelin recordings and he'd be singing and just randomly go, "yes, said." so, i thought that was kind of groovy.. :) i'm very sure she got it from him. j'ason ~~ Toriphoria http://members.aol.com/Yessaid/Toriphoria.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 19:02:25 PDT From: "Honey Drops" Subject: Re: Ice cream i agree with you too rob ... oh yeah ... i want to thank jackie ( i lost your e-mail addy ) for the YKTR cd !!!!!!!!!! it's awesome !!!!!!! just got it today !!!!!!!! thank you thank you !!! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 17:35:17 EDT From: kmfelicetti@juno.com (Kristen M Felicetti) Subject: Re: another neil gaiman connection >I asked one time for people to send me all of tori songs that have to >do with >neil and this one refernce was never sent to me but when I was reading >sandman >the book with editions 1-8 one of the comics title page was >dream a little dream >which goes in sync with >dream a little dream make my own pretty hate machine. >so is this a coincidence or on purpose. >kat "dream a little dream" could also be referring to "dream a little dream of me" it's a old song line and I've seen different comics having one issue titled "dream a little dream of me" but the Caught A Lite Sneeze theory is more likely. ~Kristen ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. But to me, it was just a "crash course" in Tori Amos. She had 4 albums, plus an album in the 80s with a band, she was raped, she had a miscarriage, her fans are pretty darn obsessive, blah blah blah. We ALREADY KNOW THIS! (we the fans) I'm not sure who this show was for... the fans who really want to see Tori on MTV a *little* more (showing her videos would be a good start) or NYSYNCYCStreetBoys fans looking for something a little deeper? Anyway, it was good for what it was, but it was disappointing to me personally. But hey, who am I anyway? marlantigone, a.w.
