One is Amos' interaction with a full band, something she hadn't done since the earliest part of her career. The second, according to Amos, is the way she developed the record around rhythm. "I wanted to use rhythm in a way that I hadn't used it before," she said in a recent interview. "I wanted to integrate the piano with it." Amos did this by cutting tracks live with drummer Matt Chamberlain and programmer Andy Gray, as well as with longtime collaborator Steve Caton. "I didn't want to be isolated this time around," she said. "I've done the 'girl and the piano' thing. I wanted to be a player with other players." The end result is an album that combines live rock 'n' roll with the Baroque piano arrangements Amos has based her career on -- as well as elements of modern R&B and dance. But no matter what, the famous Amos lyrical obliqueness is still there, as is her unique vocal style. But Amos, who has made autobiographical statements in her songs before, stops short of declaring the songs on "from the choirgirl hotel" autobiographical. "The songs have part of my life weaving in and out of them," she said. "But there's a lot in the songs. We (the songs and Amos) co-create together. It's pretty arrogant when writers think it all comes from them." There are many stories that make up the legend of Tori Amos. There's the child piano prodigy, daughter of a North Carolina Methodist minister, who began playing at age 2. There's the girl studying at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory starting at age 5 and being tossed out at age 11 for deviating from classical instruction to indulge in improvisation. There's the young woman's first effort to record, with a band that produced a universally reviled debut album titled "Y Kant Tori Read." Then there's the Amos who is, as she said, "the girl with the piano," who made her career singing about pain, hers and others. The Amos who went from rape victim to rape activist and, in doing so, became a larger-than-pop music figure. The figure who has over 4,000 Web sites devoted to her every musical twist and turn. But while "from the choirgirl hotel" comes from the same Amos her fans know and love, it had as different a genesis as any other Tori Amos album. The album came in the aftermath of a miscarriage Amos suffered through just after completing her last tour in 1996. "I went through a lot of different feelings after the miscarriage. You go through everything possible," she said. "You question what is fair. You get angry with the spirit for not wanting to come, you keep asking, 'Why?' "And then, as I was going through the anger and the sorrow and the why, the songs started to come. Before I was even aware, they were coming to me in droves." Amos said the songs that make up "from the choirgirl hotel" had a much easier time speaking to her about the miscarriage than even her close friend. In the end, Amos said she "began to feel the freedom of the music." "Each song would show me a certain side of myself because of what I was going through," she said. "So a song like 'cruel' came to me out of anger. " 'She's your cocaine' and 'iieee' came out of a sense of loss and sacrifice. And other songs celebrated the fact that I had found a new appreciation for life through this loss." While she has made her career with the voice-and-piano format, scoring platinum-plus success on each of her first three solo albums, Amos has decided to remain faithful to the new album's band-oriented production and is touring with a full band, which includes guitarist Caton, drummer Chamberlain and bassist Jon Evans. In the past, she said, "The piano had to be everybody and play every role; father, mother and daughter. "Now I'm playing quite differently because I don't need to be the rhythm section," she said. "They (the band members) do it quite well, so there's a lot more freedom for me as a player." With the newness of touring with a full band wearing off, Amos has turned her attention to other projects, such as the double CD she hopes will be available by Christmas 1999. The double CD will contain one disc of concert highlights and a second of B-side favorites. She said she got the idea for the live album after hearing complaints that her live bootlegs were so bad. Amos said she also wants to have a disc that represents her best work, because she realizes she may have hit the pinnacle of her career. "It's a scary feeling, but I think I'm at my peak right now," said Amos. "You have to be honest with yourself, and as far as stamina, muscles and voice go, now is probably the time. "I want to make a live album before I need an oxygen machine next to the piano." But until that happens, Amos will have "from the choirgirl motel" to speak to the future changes of her career. This discussion about Mary reminded me of something I'd wondered a while ago. Could Mary be referring to her mother? I know Mary is used often in songs to represent nurturing and loving women, so I could also easily see how Mary represents all women like that.Has anybody ever heard Tori comment on who Mary was written about? Just wondering. First off, it wasn't what I was expecting: I thought it was going to be some kind of in-depth look (ha..as if MTV is capable...mistake number one) at Tori's fans. Nada. It was just a few (what? four or five?) fans telling Tori's story. Really it was just a hash of Tori's life as told by fans, and her. Seriously, there wasn't much new there, except for the fact that they played a pretty long clip of "The Big Picture" video, which was just splendid! Wonder how much digging they had to do in the archives to find that one... But could everyone join me in a big "Fuck you" to MTV? It's like this--while I'm glad Tori's getting recognition for what she does, fer chrissakes people! I can count on one hand how many times I've seen Tori's videos on MTV. They have done her no favors whatsoever. The video clips played: Silent All These Years, Crucify, Winter, Me and a Gun (live), Past the Mission, Cornflake Girl, God, Hey Jupiter, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Spark, Jackie's Strength...oooh, yeah, lotsa regular airplay...or even mildly substantial airplay there...I know, I'm bitter. It's just that I get this feeling this is what execs in the MTV offices were thinking "Well, here's Tori...that wacky, eccentric, fairy-loving redheaded chick with a piano...hey, she's got some guitars and cool electronic things on this new album...maybe we should do something on her now that she's a bit more mainstream." PLEASE. Plus, they sorda lumped her fans into this "obsessive" category that pissed me off. Please, let's show that Beatles footage again! It's not because we're all so devoted, it's because they can't believe that a woman who doesn't cater to any musical formula and sell herself as "just a girl" can have such a substantial following. Hey, everyone! We're weirdos! Glad someone could point that out for us...especially a station whose idea of breaking new artists is playing the same Puff Daddy video twenty-five times a frikkin day. But I taped it. And I'll prolly watch it again right after I send this. We'll see if I'm still bleeting so bitter later on...
