Hmm, I know this is something that came up on RDTRN, and I'm not sure if this particular combination came up, but I was trying to figure out the number of degrees between Tori and Ani DiFranco, and came up with the following five-step connection: Tori --> Paulinho DaCosta --> Indigo Girls --> Sara Lee --> Ani Paulinho DaCosta played percussion on both LE and UtP; he also played percussion on tracks from Indigo Girls' albums "Indigo Girls" and "Nomads Indians Saints," and maybe "Rites of Passage," though I'm not sure since I don't have that album and can't check the liners. Sara Lee, who plays (or I think the term is now "played") bass for Indigo Girls, has also played with Ani DiFranco. Ta-da. Earlier Callie posted: Yeah, I have a thing for all those seventies relics, thats why I *love* the Steely Dan cover of 'Do It Again'. Now, my feeble mind took this to mean that Steely Dan originally sang this song and that Tori covered it. Later, in conversation with my parents, I commented that Tori covered a Steely Dan song called "Do It Again," and my mom seemed to recognize the title. So I recited a few lyrics and she said she knew the song and would like to hear Tori's version. I played it for her when we got home from dinner, and she said Tori's rendition was very different. Then, for apparently no reason, she became very convinced that Steely Dan had not sung it originally. And she consequently became obsessed with figuring out who did. Here is where I need your help. Who here knows who first sang Do It Again, and how Steely Dan got involved? My mom could just be hallucinating and having no idea what she's talking about. Does anyone know why Tori chose to cover this song, also? Please, let he or she who possesses this information come forward and let me know the truth! Set both me and my mother straight, as she is a bit old to remember and I was a bit young to have been alive, most likely. (41 days until I turn 16, woo-hoo!) Thank you all very much. I told my mom "I'll ask the list, someone will know." "What's the list?" "The Tori list! I'll post it tonight and have an answer by tomorrow night for you." Come on, you don't want to let me poor mum down, do you? Hehe even though she still has no idea what I'm talking about and very little knowledge of how the Internet works... she's going crazy with curiousity. So please make haste! I got there at 10 and was I think I got number 7. I went to the meet and greet and it took my group of people that I met a little longer to find it because people who know things aren't to generous with info but hey I understand dont want to many people to be at the meet and greet I guess that is the logic. But anyways so the meet and greet at portland really made me dissapointed because the people I met there weren't like really nice as I expected I think almost everyone on the front row of the meet and greet had met her one or more times some of them unnumerable times. and they just werent that considerate and it was dissapointing to me. I don't know I just expected more niceness but hey they are the elite few I guess so they dont have to be to considerate to us unelite. (sarcasm sorry I will try to refrain next time) sorry to generalize I met some nice people that were on the front row. I know we all complain about those that talk to her at everymeet and greet and then never give others a chance. I think they get the point so i will shut up. anyways I was on the second row and I got to pass through my winter single and got it signed and it was funny because she didnt know it was mine she started writing someone elses name on it and I was like wait that is mine so she wrote something incorporating that guys name so I got a sentence and her signature. that was cool. after that ok I was the one if you were there with the Tori Amos for President on the front and im not a virgin how the hell do I get back stage on the back shirt I handed out some flyers only 70 since they were 7cents a copy at kinko's about being quiet during tori's stories I was afraid some people would be mean to me about it so I got my boyfriend to come along with me and hand them out I am a passive type so I dont like conflict. but then the show came and it was so awesome she played wonderfully and told great stories about our pot up here and mtv awards it was great I left early trying to get a good place this time at the meet and greet after the show and I got front row this time with the awesome people that had seats by me at the show (hello garret, emily, mike, and damn it blacked haired nice guy your name is gone from me right now I am so so sorry) and but I didnt talked to her this meet and greet because I didnt want to interupt the people around me's moments with her so i just slipped under the pink in for her to sign. and was quiet. but anyways after that I was on my way to eugene which I will talk about in my next post. great show great great I had so much fun and the set list was awesome kat ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 22:56:32 -0700 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: Or, well (addendum:) He could have been talking about "Little Amsterdam," I guess. :) Beth - -- "It was the same for both of us. Another one that comes to mind is the song "One Song Glory," from the musical RENT. And normally I wouldn't think that Indigo Girls songs would really be compatible with Tori's vocal color and style, but I'd be interested in seeing how she would treat "Jonas and Ezekial;" it's a song with a very dark, mysterious feel to it and I think it would sound pretty awesome done by Tori. This days experience was great I got in line behind the people I sat by at Portland's show and they are cool I was lucky to have sat by them at portland and then in line with them in eugene. so we passed the time together well. I dont know why but some people started a new number system for the meet and greet which of course didnt work so it didnt matter but anyways we were all waiting for the meet and greet to start and someone started running towards the barricades so it started a mad dash towards the barricades luckily I am fast so I got there in time to be one of the first liners with some cool first time meeters and the cool people I was in line with this time I made sure that I took a moment of my own with tori this time and I asked her if she had opened the gifts she got from Portland and she said yes what did you give and I said the fairy and child picture did you like it and she said oh yes it was beautiful I loved it. yippee and she signed the wedding page of hte program for me and took a little note i wrote to her and put it in her pocket and then i asked her to play merman for me because it is my song to my boyfriend and I wrote it in the little note also. and she said ummm I will try we will see and she wrote it on her hand and then the nice guys I met got me to pose with her and both of them clicked a picture of me and tori it was great. so anyways after the meet and greet we just hung out in line and it was cool becauase people totally respected the number system the guys in front of me started and it was different from the other systems and it really worked nicely. so we all got in fairly when the time came. and all us new friends made a mad dash for the stage I tripped like 5 times almost falling on my face because i am not the most cordinated girl in the bunch :) so I made it to the front row on the wooden barricade before the stage. First row oh my god and I was right center between the piano and the keyboard I was so lucky so so so lucky. then the show started and she played the best set list ever and it was great I could see her drool:o) anyways it was such an experience i can not explain being that close to greatness and you could just feel her and she made eye contact with the people around me and me too while she was singing. to soon the show was over and it was time for the encore. she hadn't played merman yet and I was afraid she wasnt going to she played raspberry and then the second encore she started merman and I balled and she look straight at me during one like of the song when she sang you have found your merman oh my god. I swear. this might be in my imagination that she was really looking at me and not just around me but in my heart I believe it. I cried and cried it was so touching and wonderful. but that was my experince it was wonderful I met some kick ass people and made new friends (sorry to those that asked for more stickers but my boyfriend couldnt find them in the car I feel bad that you didnt get them) I loved it all and it is a memory I will hold forever. thank you for reading Kat ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 03:12:08 -0400 From: "Nicole Schultz" Subject: Re: re:TORI AMOS AT CHRYSLER HALL -- TICKET INFO it's Crysler Hall in Norfolk, Virginia.. sorry... - ---------- > From: glytter grrl > To: precious-things@smoe.org > Subject: re:TORI AMOS AT CHRYSLER HALL -- TICKET INFO > Date: Monday, September 14, 1998 8:10 PM > > > IS THIS CHRYSLER HALL IN WINDSOR ONTARIO? The UK one, probably like the german one comes in slim line jewel case and it is a picture CD: face of Tori which is more shiny than the pic on the promo CD (it's like the difference between the pics on the Spark cd1 and cd2). You will not believe this! I posted last night asking about the song "Do It Again," and who sang it originally (I'm sure you all remember). This morning, when my mom and I got in the car to take me to school, the radio was on. The radio is rarely on in my mom's car, and it wasn't even my station, it was some oddball station she had been listening to last night. Well, I'm sure you can all guess what song was playing... that's right, it was the Steely Dan version of Do It Again!!! And it had just started, too. Mum looked at me and said "This is that song!" I thought she was probably just smoking crack until I heard the words start. Hehe. Wow, the Lord really does work in mysterious ways, eh? How strange! Anyway, for those of you who haven't heard the original (read: those of you that are my age) it's actually pretty cool. Tori changes the tempo, slows it down a bit, but it has the same basic feel. Of course I like Tori's version better, but you usually like better whichever version you hear first. So who knows. Just thought I'd share with you all that bit of information. :oD Love, Sara scootering is not a crime ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 19:34:16 -0400 From: "~Wendi~" Subject: Re: Do It Again Hi, It was Steely Dan as far as I know. Their web page lists it on an album called "Can't Buy a Thrill". It says all songs composed & written by Walter Becker & Donald Fagen (AKA Steely Dan). Here are the lyrics by the way. In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water Then you fire 'til he is done in but they catch you at the border And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round You go back, Jack, do it again When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend In a room with your two timer, and you're sure you're near the end Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow All the time you know she's smilin', you'll be on your knees tomorrow [Chorus] [Guitar Solo] [Keyboard Solo] Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gambling man Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table [Chorus] Hope this helps!!
