Hi guys.. OK, OK, I took leave of my senses, but I have the 12" Swirl promo, and it was worth every penny. The Sticky Extended Vocal Mix is undoubtedly the finest Tori mix that has ever been produced. It's very drawn out (coming in at 7:50) but the vocal is mostly intact, and it's certainly listenable. Lots of little syntheisizer bits, and dance bits. The instrumental mix *does* have some vocal, and I think includes a line that the vocal mix doesn't ("I am not your senorita") - this mix is even longer at 9:34. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of our number may find themselves with an MP3 to distribute fairly soon... ;) so watch out for that. "And she swirls and she swirls and she swirls again. And she swirls and she swirls and she swirls, yeah.." are the main vocal clips. It is, however, *Really* pleasant. Anyway, if anyone is thinking of parting with vast sums of money for it, it *is* actually worth having. It's not worth what I've just paid for it, but it's nice enough. The picture sleeve, for those of you who haven't seen it, is a big pile of raspberries, very close up. They gave it 3 stars out of 4 (=good). -- TORI AMOS THROWS HER ALL INTO MUSIC ON BJCC STAGE by Mary Colurso The exquisitely eccentric Tori Amos indulged in a rare brand of performance art Friday night at the BJCC Concert Hall. Here's a delicate, flame-haired woman wearing black pants, a black top and some type of long, flowered apron tied at her neck and waist. In spite of her diminutive size, she straddles the piano stool with intensity - now dreamily passionate, then rigid with fury. She writhes on the keyboard as she plays it, pushing out songs heavily laden with imagery that nevertheless dissect the human condition. Her voice? A unique, hiccuping, gasping, crooning instrument that soars into icy soprano whenever the mood of the piece requires it. Amos' lyrics can be frustratingly hard to make out in concert (what's that she's murmuring/shrieking about "Precious Things" or "Playboy Mommy?") but the emotions behind them stand out in crystal relief. She's artsy in the best sense of the term, too, providing the audience with a brilliantly evocative light show. These flashes of color and pattern punctuate her tunes, enveloping Tori in a sea of jewel green, a startling haze of blue or a hailstorm of purple and gold. Definately cool stuff - although Amos would only be idiosyncratic if her music wasn't grounded in strong composition and an obvious command of the piano. Happily, her 8 p.m. show in Birmingham demonstrated that Amos is far more that a feminist novelty act. Appearing here with a three-man backup band, Amos exuded the air of the fierce individualist - a singer/songwriter compelled to do things her own way no matter what anyone thinks. Her albums are that way, as well, probing sore subjects such as incest, rape, domestic violence, religion and sexual oppression. Leave it to Amos to call her latest CD "from the chiorgirl hotel" when performing as a demure cog in a traditional collective is the last thing that would suit her talents or tastes. Speaking of tastes, Amos is probably an acquired one; few people appreciate or understand her songs upon the first hearing. Neither her recordings nor her live shows are straightforward and she occassionaly strays into the baroque. At times, its easy to admire Amos' work but rather difficult to like it. Still, Amos' originality and power have propelled her to stardom, and these qualities have a worth that's undeniable. Here, they glistened through renditions of "Little Amsterdam," "iieee," and other selections from her four- album songbook. Amos was preceded by a nicely balanced opening set by The Devlins, an Irish pop/rock band that made the most of its 45 minutes on stage. - -- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 08:50:26 EDT From: "glytter grrl" Subject: Re: Lyric Clarification this is what my friends and i have always gotten out of it.... Actually, I think for a lot of us older Tori-fans, we were introduced via WoM (word of mouth); someone played Tori for us, and we loved it. It was my exhubby who introduced me to Tori's music shortly before UtP came out, and since then, I've introduced at least 3 other people to her music, and they've come to love her as well. But it's been very, very seldom I've ever heard her played on the radio; even on KROQ in Los Angeles...I've heard 'Spark' more frequently than others, but even that doesn't get the overkill'ed airplay that ... oh, let's say 'my heart will go on' does ... and I'm actually kinda glad for it (you have no idea how sick I am of Celene Dion, Mariah Carey, and the like). I would like to hear her played more often, but I'm not holding my breath. I've always classified Tori as being True alternative ... her music doesn't really fit in one specific catergory. "Take to the Sky" is on the Winter CD5 maxi-single, which is commonly found everywhere even though it says it is a limited edition. I highly recommend it. It also has Sweet Dreams, Upside Down, and The Pool on it. I don't think Landslide is on any singles yet, but it is on several bootlegs, one of the best being 'Dew Drop Inn Boulder'. Hope this helps. :) Darren Linder ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 19:27:58 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: Tori's Mother's birthplace / Beenie Jen asked: > Question/Comment #1: > > Our local paper said that Tori's mother was born in Chattanooga (my > hometown). Does anyone have anymore info on this? Well, Tori mentioned that during the August 4, 1996 show. She also mentioned it was her mom's birthday the next day, and that she--Tori--had never been to Chattanooga before. > Does anyone know Tori's mother's maiden name? Well, her poppa's last name was Copeland, so it was Copeland, right? This is covered in the official bio, "Tori Amos: All These Years." > Does anyone know if Tori's mother actually lived in Chattanooga for any > significant length of time, or was she simply born here as her parents > were passing through? (Here?) I don't know. I'd be guessing they were there for a while, but then moved to western North Carolina and settled in. No, but Beenie's real shy, and I know the last thing she wants is people coming up to her at shows she attends. I hope it doesn't become widely known what she looks like so that doesn't happen. We can't have Beenie too intimidated to attend shows, now, can we? (which didnt come until two years after i discovered her, hehe) so now, i've got eps, lps, cds, cassettes, and everyone in my house complains because i listen to her so much. ("god, she sounds like she's dying!") i'm going to a concert she's putting on here in oregon in september (any of you going?) and i'm curious what it'll be like, since she's got a band this time, and it'll be different from the accounts i've heard of her solo :) erm.. i think i've rambled quite enough. :) amy "Maybe it isn't the end of the world..
