Hey, I was just browsing Music Boulevard's ( http://musicblvd.com/ ) Tori catalog and they have listed 2 new UK singles for Jackie's Strength to be released on 11/08/98 and 14/08/98. 2 different dates? And wasn't it supposed to be on 3/08/98? Jeez, I hate delays. CD Universe also lists the same info... but Siren CD (http://www.sirencd.com/ ) now says that Rapsberry Swirl has replaced Jackie's Strength (nothing new, of course) but it says that they will be released on August 3rd. So all this is kind of dizzying! I personally want to see Jackie's Strength released first because: 1) I love the song... and the video rules. 2) I prefer more b-sides (Merman! and something new...) to just remixes (even though I do like them and would buy them). 3) I don't really think Rapsberry Swirl is commercial at all. I would love to see the following songs being released as singles (I will include Spark just to have an order): 1) Spark (everywhere) 2) Jackie's Strength (everywhere) 3) Playboy Mommy (everywhere) 4) i i e e e (everywhere) 5) Cruel (everywhere) 6) Liquid Diamonds (UK only, in case they choose to release only 5 singles in the US) But I would be happy with any release from the album... I am kind like that. :) The only problem would be getting them... . Well, that's all folks! Giovanni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 20:10:08 -0700 From: Katie Meeker Subject: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Articles I didn't notice anyone transcribe these, so I thought that I would give it a go...the first article appeared in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on the day of the concert (July 15, 1998) and the second article appeared after the concert (July 16, 1998)...both articles were written by the same journalist (Rob Elder) and this person seems to know his background pretty well...anyway, here goes... Tori Amos' tour, latest album display singer's new sound (by Rob Elder of the Journal Sentinel staff on July 15, 1998) One spotlight. A woman and her piano. Singer-songwriter Tori Amos' formula of simple, honest songs soaked in mythological metaphors has earned her a huge, almost religiously loyal fan base. But with her new album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel," Amos is playing with a full band for the first time. Amos opens her new tour, "Plugged '98," at the Milwaukee Auditorium tonight. Her new sound and stage performance are a step away from her soloist roots, and she's hoping her fans will make the move with her. "People can expect a lot of confusion at the first show," Amos said in a phone interview last week. "Hopefully, they'll be able to buckle their seat belts and not get traffic tickets." In conversation, Amos is polite and measurably reflective. Long pauses linger in the spaces between question and answer, and she often restarts her opening sentence. It is perhaps this wandering, sometimes eccentric, approach to press interviews that has caused some critics to paint her as an "insipid Tinker Bell character," or, more cruelly, "a 24-carat fruit loop." Despite how the press casts her, Amos is a well-respected, piano-playing rock goddess. Rolling Stone writer Steven Daly recently called her "the Anne Rice of Rock Music," although she doesn't agree with that description either. "It was the writer's sound bite, and that was his right. The similarities are that she goes after the dark side of people and I expore getting along with the dark side. There's so much richness in the dark side." "From the Choirgirl Hotel," her fourth solo album, exploits that dark side, mixing themes of sexuality, faith, loss and sacrifice into what is musically her most innovative record to date. Although the compositions are still piano-based, they lean on pulsing, polyrhythmic electronica and full band arrangements. "Choirgirl" is also perhaps her most personal and introspective album. The first single, "Spark," explores the trauma of a recent miscarriage, while the harrowing "Jackie's Strength" asks for courage during her wedding day. (Amos married her longtime engineer Mark Hawley in February.) The daughter of a Methodist minister, Amos is on a mission to expose Christianity's underbelly. She believes that women too often are made scapegoats and treated like spiritual second-class citizens in the church. "Mary Magdalene is really someone who has made the church very uncomfortable," Amos said. "That is why you have two Marys in the Bible: one that is very sexual, and one that is virtuous and spiritual, cut off from her sexuality. "In doing so, they take away all her wisdom. So instead of people having to align with one or the other, the Marys need to become married--joined together." Sex and religion are not strange bedfellows for amos. "I'm always trying to bring the two together--sexuality and spirituality--to hold them together at the same time," Amos said. Amos has always been obsessed with the mythical and metaphysical. Her songbook is populated with Oz-like characters, where she hangs out "with the Dream King" and "Judy Garland takes Buddha by the hand." "When I'm writing, a lot of these characters show up. People you know and run into are a portion of those characters," Amos said. ************************************* Amos a study in complexity >From hush to frenzy, she hypnotizes her fans (by Rob Elder of the Journal Sentinel staff on July 16, 1998) "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture," someone once said. This being true, writing about music is even tougher. Especially when describing Tori Amos' performance Wednesday night at the Auditorium. Opening with "Precious Things," from her debut album, "Little Earthquakes," Amos and band launched into what would be an almost two-hour set. Following with "iieee," she broke off the last half of the song into a powerful, swirling piano solo that cut through the mist-filled auditorium. Remaining seated for the entire performance, Amos rotated back and forth between her piano and a synthesizer. Amos' stage presence is marked by her inability to sit still in front of the piano, rising and gyrating. Her breathy, passionate delivery of lyrics and seduction of the microphone are as hypnotic as a snake charmer in front of a cobra. The only difference is Amos' almost religiously loyal fans are less likely to attack her--or break from her spell. Strangely, the first half of Amos' set was heavily saturated with her early material--an odd choice for someone whose new album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel," has rejuvenated her career and refreshed her songbook. Not that the crowd cared much. They went wild just when she sat down. Touring with a full band for the first time in four albums, Amos seemed content to share the spotlight. Just returning from Europe, Wednesday night was the first date of Amos' American tour. With what little time she had to prepare, her performance was complex and impressive as she integrated her new and old material into band arrangements. The ensemble fit well together and kept Amos from wandering too far on improvisational romps, something that plagued her last tour. Although notoriously chatty on stage (and charmingly so), Amos was quiet for most of the concert--putting her energy into the new set. Surprises of the evening included a gentle, pulsing rendition of "Honey," a B-side from her "Under the Pink" sessions. "Space Dog" also made an appearance, although much revamped with a metal-riffed face lift. The best performances of the evening were the seductive, dark "Cruel" and "Jackie's Strength," a song in which she asks for Jackie Kennedy Onassis' courage on her wedding day. Bubbles poured out of the stage during "Spark" as members of the crowd leaned over the barrier to grab them. Amos also took some time to play without her band and return to her roots with the song "China." Unwilling to leave, the crowd was awarded with several encores, which included a techno-styled "Raspberry Swirl" and "She's Your Cocaine." ****************************** that's it for right now...I may eventually post my own thoughts on this show...if anyone out there booted this concert, I would REALLY like a copy... I was just reading the post about the "Jackie's Strength" video {Thank you Giovanni for describing it for those of us who haven't seen it yet.} and I remembered something one of my clients was telling me about Jackie O last week. He read some book, I think he said it was written by President Kennedy's mother, Rose. Anyway, in this book, she talks about Jackie, and how her marriage to the President was more one of convenience than love; she was good "stock" and would bear children worthy of the Kennedy name. He also spoke of the President's bachelor party, where he took off for days on a yacht filled with women, and of his affair with Marilyn Monroe. It was interesting to talk about this, because I never knew too much about the whole Camelot thing. Maybe this ties into the video and the idea of the song, the whole notion of a woman who took so much and retained her dignity, poise, and strength. ~~taci~ The Introverted Candlewoman http://members.xoom.com/Candlewoman ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ "I lost my head, it wasn't in its basket" -Lisa Germano ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. "Part of you has to die, and in Marianne it's the whole Mary Magdalene reference, a young girl who I knew that died. There's the whole idea of that part of woman that has been dormant, who's been dead. 'The quickest girl in the frying pan,' the priestesses who showed her they were one with the knowledge and the passion...man, get rid of them!" "Tuna/Rubber/A little blubber in my igloo...' For me to say that line in another way would just make it really gross and crass. Sometimes it's just about how something makes you feel. You've got to go there, you've got to be willing to take that trip. And images, tastes, smells, objects... it's associations. To me, these things are concrete. Some were a little more layered than others, no question about that. But I think from beginning to end it's about a woman's journey; and it's a really emotional journey." "Marianne Curtis is a girl I went to school with in junior high. She was the kind of person everyone adored, she was just magical. I had written a song about her years ago which I used to play in the bars sometimes. It never went any further than being performed, I didn't record it. Since then I have always wanted to have Marianne in a song. She died from a drug overdose when she was 15. It is not known, but I don't believe it was suicide. I think she took the wrong things together. She is very special to me, and comes to visit in my songs sometimes." "Umm, Marianne came to visit me -- the spirit of Marianne. Marianne Curtis was a girl that I went to school with. And uh, some say she killed herself, some say she died over an O.D. I choose to believe that Marianne just umm -- to me she was kind of like a young Mary Magdalene. She... it just wasn't... the world couldn't hold her any more, it couldn't, umm, understand her energy. I think anybody that knew Marianne, would tell you that she reflected the best parts of you back. So when you'd look into Marianne's eyes, yes, of course she was beautiful, but you felt beautiful, because Marianne never hated anything - -- anybody. And so when she died, you felt like this thing that reflected the best part of you, had died. So for Marianne to come back again, was umm... it was uh... like the second coming for me, really."
