It was only at the end of it that I saw them show a clip from Spark. The show seems to be about people criticizing music videos, and this guy was mimicing Tori with her blindfold on. He said he hated seeing her tied up like that. Nothing big, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Maybe she will appear on the show. It says: "SPARK" Tori Amos - Amos assumes the role she was born to play: victim. Blindfolded, with her hands tied behind her back, and left in a forest to rot, she writhes and stumbles hopelessly. The dank cinematography has nightmare resonance, but the singer only winds up seeming self-righteous, and the result makes the music sound like a self-indulgent whine. Now that we have *finally* determined which is Tori's dominant hand, can I share w/y'all what I always thought the lines in question referred to. "I know what you want/the magpies have come/if you know me so well then tell me which hand I use...make them go...make them go" from Yes Anastasia (UtP) referred to. I thought it referred to Anastasia & the persistant questions over whether she was really assasinated w/Czar Nicolas & the rest of the family in 1918 or whether she survived; or if the woman (or women) who claimed to be her was merely an imposter. I thought "if you know me so well then tell me which hand I use" perhaps referred to how Anastasia/the imposter was constantly questioned & tested, especially by the royal relative all over Europe (including the Windsors) who rejected the woman who claimed to be Anastasia. The song, to me, is littered with references to Anastasia..."there's something we left on the windowsill", "show me the ways to get back to the garden" "Happy birthday her blood's on my dress", and the most obvious reference - "Thought I'd been through this in 1919". I don't think the song is completely and absolutely about Anastasia, but perhaps about the ability to live through something devastating, being doubted, being true to ones' self/to others - all themes that are common in Tori's songs. Just thought I'd share my hefty 2cents worth. The history of Czar Nicolas & what happened to his family, including Anastasia & Alexi the son, has been an ongoing obsession of mine (in addition to my obsession with Tori!) Friends who have studied her lyrics say they're either incredibly deep or completely senseless. And her music takes off in so many directions, within the same song, it's like she's possessed. That's why I think i'm in love with this album. 'Spark' has these hypnotic, languid guitars. 'Black-dove (january)' is like the soundtrack to a dream; kind of soft and cottony at the beginning, then crashing and operatic in the middle. And 'Raspberry Swirl'--wow! Checking out a music store, and I came across a Spark Single. It was priced at $10, and came in a jewel case. So I knew it wasn't the UK Disc 1 import. I assumed it was the US release that was short one track from the non-limited UK disc. However this one has the same track listing as the UK one. But it's issue number (84105) is the same as the US one. It also has both the EastWest and Atlantic logos on the disc and inserts, but the spine just says Atlantic. I've accumulated what I thought was correct info about the Spark singles for my discography. But this purchase I made today, seems to conflict with much of what i've gathered. What I'd like is for people to check out my Discography it's at http://www.golden.net/~eternity/Through_The_Portal/ and let me know how much I'm missing and how much is incorrect concerning my Spark single entries. Also could somebody give me an idea as too what the deal is with this single I bought. I'll give an example of how I think my discography is in error Supposedly there is only two UK singles the standard disc, and the limited disc. And then there's three US singles, a 2 b-side disc, a 1 b-side disc, and a 1-bside cassette. This seems to be the commonly accepted information about these singles. But my information, which I put together from several sources says that the cassette is a UK release (AT3001C, note this issue number that supposedly came from the cassette-single is in the same format as the other UK issue numbers, this supports that it's a UK release), and the US 1 b-side disc is also available as a 7" vinyl under the same issue number (84104). Now I got this new disc, which seems to be the same as the UK Disc-1, except for three things 1) It's in a full jewel box, instead of the thin-line jewel box. 2) It's issue number (84105) on the spine, is the same as the 2 b-side US disc. 3) It's also clearly a Canadian release. I'm sorry for repeating some of this information. I'm just making sure I've covered this all. The thing that I find most odd is that they woud use the same issue number for a US release, and a supposed Canadian release, with different track listings. When as far as I know seperate Canadian releases don't even exist. Okay I'm going now, thank you very much for any help you can give. - -- Matthew Skillings eternity@golden.net http://www.golden.net/~eternity/ "O, they tell us there's poison in the well, that someone's been a bit untidy and there's been a small spill." - 10,000 Maniacs (Poison in the Well) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Jul 1998 23:10:41 -0400 From: frater tot Subject: new radio benefit cd toriphiles, tori will be featured on a new compilation being released by eastern front records to benefit the wrxv, a radio station in the boston area. it's titled _wxrv presents - live from the river music hall_. tori's track is "marianne". here are the details from eastern front's spiel: >And what is "Live From the River Music Hall, Volume 1", you ask?
