And even though there were headbangers in attendance, you could hear a pin drop during a quiet part of the song. Of course there was shouting when she first came out, and the usual I LOVE YOU TORI's every now and then, and of course when she returned for encores, there was screaming for requests. It's rude to >the performer, and it's rude to the people around you. Instead of just agreeing, I'd like to say that quite frankly, Philly may have been just as rude, but perhaps by being up in the balcony seated I was kinda insulated from the worst. I mean, my biggest complaint was the 60-something year old mother asking her daughter every other song, "What did she say?". And in listening to the tape of that performance as compared to some of the others, I must say it was one of the more "quiet" audiences. No "beatlemania screaming" and even when Tori invited us to sing Icicle, two lines were sung along then nothing. I loved hearing on the Fla concert everyone singing along, because for the most part they *were* singing, not screaming out lines as I've heard on other concerts. The unconscious raising of voices during cloud on my tongue just sends thrills through me. Yet on the DC boot, it is obvious there was nothing unconscious about the "scream-along". When the great debates were taking place about the required quietness during a Tori show--how everyone should be respectful and not shout during songs, etc.---I'm sure NONE of us were invisioning the likelihood of a mosh pit at a Tori Concert. My big *shock statement* was that perhaps Tori would have a song that she would want us to boogie to. Was I *shocked* when I heard Raspberry and some of the other groovin' girls. We could have thousends of e-mails cataloging our complaints and wishing for better security. I could be dreading my upcoming experience at the Spectrum. But these things accomplish nothing. May I suggest (at the risk of outraging folks) that we need to not only take personal responcibility for our own behavior (ie-how many of you when shoved, shove back? How many when edged out of the way at the meet & greet edged back in?), but to also take responcibility for those about us who do not know what they are missing while they are screaming. Yes, I'll risk a fist to educate someone who is not only ruining my experience, but ruining their own. I've yet to find someone who will actually fight a reasonable voice. Usually they either listen, or storm away in frustration. There are enough of us I think who can help police. "If there is a bad apple there, tell Joel" or whoever. Security can't be in two hundred places at once, and they can't always tell who is making trouble and who is just having a good time. Can't you see the reactions to a group of net toriphiles forming a group to organize meet & greets (if Tori continues them), and to make sure no one is getting hurt? OK, I'm gettin' off the soapbox. Just think about it. And when you think, "Why me? Why should I?", I ask, Why shouldn't you? Just me thinks. Don't flame me too bad please. My take on Spark (not all that different from what has been published before, but I digress...) I remember hearing somewhere that Tori smoked (am I wrong about this?) This can also go along with the "No cigarettes only peeled havans" line, because she always seems to fascinated with cigar smoking.. it kinda a quirky rich power-monger thing for he i believe. Anyway it's very possible the patches were was helped the miscarraige along, as well as pushing herself too hard of course. "you say you don't want it... this circus we're in" Maybe rationalizing not having the child? "How many fates turn around in the overtime Ballerinas that have fins that you'll never find You thought that you were the bomb yes well so did I.." What I get from this, and the main gist of the song, is that she's trying to find a reason to go on, where is her spark, where is that light inside of her? My dad used to say sometimes it takes a person hitting rock bottom before they can finally come around, and that's what I think she's saying with "How many fates..." The ballerina comment is interesting, because on the cover she says something like "Ballerinas that dance around shoeless" and in "Blood Roses" she mentions the binding of feet. I think she thinks ballerinas ar ebeautiful creatures, but the lengths they go to for that beauty are saddening. (The 'round and round your feet' line in Blood Roses always reminded me of Asian women binding their feet, which is similar)... for these beautiful creatures to have fins is, considering her "underwater thing" fetish, a very liberating thing, lik efinding out you have this other self, or strength, or spark, you didn't know was there. "You thought that you were the bomb".. basically how she thought she was going to be this incredible mother, but the miscarriage insinuated the baby really didn't want her. "Pandora's Aquarium" is quickly becoming my favorite (besides "i i e e e", which will always hold a plac ein my heart :)) ...I love the lyrics in this song, and some of them I think are rather obvious, but I'll go through my interp anyway. Obviously there's Pandora's box.. which can be construed as the secret evils of the world, associated with feminity sicne she did the Eve-like thing by letting them out. But to Tori, it's a wonderful Aquarium (we know how water emanates throughout the album), and I think what she's getting at here is her relationship with Mark and how it was affected by the crisis (and I get the feeling, from her writing about/dealing with feelings about Eric as well, which "Hotel" and "Northern Lad" go through). Like she has this secret underwater world she's been living in throughout these experiences, and he feels like he can't get in (similar to "Baker Baker"). Line me up in single file with all your grievances Stare, but I can taste you're still alive below the waist Ripples come and ripples go, and ripple back to me... Basically, I know you're upset with me and feel shut out, but I know I can reach you (Tori talking abou oral sex... so awesome :)) And sex is like water for her two, they can experience that together. There will be times when feelings come and go, but she stillw ants to share with him, she wnats him to come back. She's letting him in in essence. I am not askingyou to believe in me Boy I think you're confused, I'm not Persephone Basically it's like a disclaimer, she knows this is all difficult to deal with and she doesn't want blind faith. But she's not locked away in the underworld somewhere, she's not an unwilling partner who ate of forbidden fruit and somehow is trapped in her sorrow (or in their relationship)... there's another Eve reference there, which she also talks about in Raspberyy Swirl ("In the garden I have done no crime") The fruit reminds me of the miscarriage, and I think "molassas" is what shse saw when she asked to see the child after it came out. If there's something that is seen as binding her to sorrow in this, that would be it in my opinion. Foam can be dangerous with tape across my mouth These things you do I've never asked you how She talks a lot about saliva/foam/etc on the album and I think that may be connected to the image of the child after it came out, or of the actually experience of the miscarriage itself... maybe she drooled when she hit the floor? Something very personal to her that we may not have details about. It also can be construed as semen, and of course the danger of getting pregnant again is having the loss again. "Tape across my maouth".. very similar to silent all these years, maybe the foam is her inner selfbeing kept in.. whatdo you think? How does that connect with the next line, about Mark (obstensively?) Maybe he's keeping her in (I doubt that, he sounds like avery caring individual)? I'm still puzzling that one out... She's in new York somewhere checking her accounts The Lord of the Flies was diagnosed as Sound She mentions in "Cocaine" "Taking my easel and qriting good checks, yes" there seems to be a connection with money problems in this.. maybe she was going through something like that? In the Rolling Stone article she talked about buying a $12,000 piece of furniture and calling it "Tori's Folly" or something to that affect. Also if Persephone is gone to New York (we obviously have a China connection here.. in that song I think she's New York and Eric is China, since he builds the Great Wall around him)... it's as if to say, don't be confused, I'm here with you, you don't have to accept me but I'm not leaving, even though I've been in my little aquarium. The Lord of the Flies is typoes I think on the album, because she seems to be saying "Flies" not "Files" (though if any of you have seen the David Duchovny magazine lately, you'll see the irony). If mentally they diagnose the Lord of the Flies (which, if you've read the book, caused mayhem and havoc among a group of boys who became murderous) as "sound". i.e. in his right mind, then what is she? It seems to be a God reference, as if to say, well for lack of a better phrasing, "If the divine master's son is perfection, maybe next I'll give Judas a try."
