Tori appears on Ferron's CD "Phantom Center". The original issue, from 1990, has her on the backing vocals. The re-issue was remixed to highlight Tori's vocals, with the exception of the song "Stand Up" -- that one was completely re-recorded, leaving Tori off the track. /nad {graduating this weekend! :) } ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 23:30:12 -0500 From: forsythia_in_the_spam@juno.com (Dust A Bunny) Subject: What is so bad about Uncle Sam? It was simply beautiful. Here are the lyrics, and only in one instant, did I have problems deciphering what she was singing. Contrary to the review, this song wasn't a cappella, but just her and the piano. I know... oooh darling I know... little girl I know we're dying, with my foot on the floor I see it clear, no stopping you now, no stopping you from going on to the God's world now I know... we are dying my little girl nothing, stop the ??? There's a quote that I used once in a paper I wrote a while back on the Cuban Missile Crisis about how worried JFK was about the whole situation, particularly about the children that would be at risk-- and this is not to say he never did anything wrong. The times he lived in were turbulent, and in my opinion, it would be extremely difficult to make some of the decisions he did in the face of such a demanding country. I think the point of Jackie's Strength is to point out that Jackie survived alot: an unfaithful husband, the death of her husband (which had to have an effect, even if it was only watching her children miss their father and explaining death to them, etc.), living whilst in the eyes of an country and the world, living as a widow, etc. I think Tori, perhaps in the face of her new marriage, would want the same strength. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 04:54:02 -0500 (EST) From: Charlie Poole Subject: Re: Tori's concert in LAUNCH Hi All, On Tue, 9 Jun 1998, Sharon D Moeller wrote: > >Where did you get the Launch CD? > >Sarah :) > > I got it through the mail, I'm a subscriber. > BUT I think you can get it at BIG bookstores in many places, though I > haven't seen one personally myself. This afternoon, Tori arrived at the Congresgebouw (now called CongresCentrum) in Den Haag at 16.15 . Near the artists' entrance many fans - - sorry, Ears With Feet (!) - (some 20-30) were waiting for her to come, hoping for autographs, many photographs and generally meeting her. Also present was a Belgian camera crew. The "Canvas" channel (BRTN 2) of Belgium will broadcast these images at July 1st, 23.20 . They filmed the things that happened when Tori arrived. As has become usual, Tori was very friendly towards all the people there and talked to everyone individually. There were quite a few people there who had a present for her and many of us wanted to have a picture taken of themselves with Tori. Despite the fact that security had put little fences between her and the EWF, it didn't really matter much. She still made a great contact with everyone. Nearest to the door where she was supposed to go in, were some foreign fans, I think from England and/or America. Although I was happy that they were there (after all, Tori stayed outside longer, which meant a great photo opportunity) I was a bit bewildered by the amount of fanatism they displayed. I've heard some stories about things that happened in the US, and I am pretty glad that things are a bit more relaxed here. Joel seemed a bit stressed, as always ;), and said a few times that they were supposed to be fast, because they had a soundcheck to do, but Tori didn't listen to him much, which I found pretty funny. A few of us asked both Steve Caton and Tori to play "Doughnut song" tonight, because of the great guitar solo in that song. Steve said we had to ask Tori, Tori didn't say much if she would play that song. We'll wait and see! I think the whole thing took some 15 minutes, then she went inside. I'm off to eat something and then go back to the CongresCentrum, will check back with you A.S.A.P. P.S. if you're wondering: I got 2 autographs and a photo of myself with Tori today! Yahoo... Does anyone sometimes have trouble understanding what Tori is singing in some of her songs? Yes, the obvious answer is to check the lyrics. . . but- Often times I'll listen to the song and without realizing it, make up my own lyric and don't think anything of it when I'm singing along until I realize how silly it sounds (and that can be many days/weeks later!) then I'll check the lyrics. I do this w/others besides Tori. I'm so bad that my sister got me a book for Xmas few years back called "Scuse Me while I Kiss this Guy" and other misheard song lyrics - has anyone ever seen the book? Its quite funny - people submit what they thought they heard in songs. for example: 'Last night I dreamt of some bagels' instead of "Last night I dreamt of San Pedro" (madonna, la isla bonita) OR 'Whoa Nipsy Russell' instead of "Roam if you want to" (b52's, roam) OR 'we are ancient sophocles' instead of "we are agents of the free" (rem, orange crush). Catch my drift? Here's some of my Tori flubs: Liquid Diamonds: "the orphans bring me molasses" (offering is...) Other classic flubs: Horses: "as long as you're on me/keep perfectly still" (thankfully I caught this early on) God: "you make pretty faces" (should be 'you make pretty daisies) Cruel: "no cigarettes only peeled bananas for you" (duh! peeled havanas) Cornflake girl: "gone to the other side with a big pink glove" (...encyclopedia) blood roses: "you gave him your blood and you warmed it up" (your warm little diamond) Professional widow: "slowfucker" (starfucker) "give me peace love and colick" (hard cock" Talula: "Congratulations/saw you had a devil tongue" Doughnut song: "conquerer still to a headless photo that your in" (copper to steel toa hinge that is faltered that lets you in). Springtime of his voodoo: "on 65 got a piece all over the backseat Hollywood is coming so lets get in" (got a piece tied up in the backseat honey we're recovreing christians" PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one who's had some clever versions of Tori's songs! (I only wonder what Tori would say if she saw how I butchered her songs...) If you have some Tori lyrics of your own, let us know - surely I'm not the only one who has bad hearing... Firstly, let me reccomend that anyone who was at the first few UK dates who didn't get a tour book gets one. The service from the company providing them was nothing short of outstanding. They received my cheque on Monday morning, and here I am, on Wednesday with the book in my hand. Not only was the service efficient, but the packaging was safe, ensuring that it arrived in perfect condition. Anyway, enough of the advert.. The front cover is the same as the giant poster that was being sold at the concerts, with Tori giving the two-fingered salute ;) .. inside the cover is a hand-written note to the fans from Tori, followed by another photocopier photo. Then there's an extract from "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman (about Tori the talking tree) .. the next section is of the studio and things that happened - great picture of Marcel... then there's a new concert photo and the "blue" picture from the base of the Ltd.UK CD for Spark (you know the one, guys?)... the next pages are a beautiful shot of waves crashing against rocks, with some pictures from the recording studio and the surrounding countryside. The centre is more waves, which fold out to show photographs from the preview tour. The next two pages are wedding photographs in b/w.. then there's the "blue"photo from FTCGH, and a green live photo. Then we have my favourite pages - the scenes from Tori's Christmas at the studio - very funny photos, and one has to wonder *just* what Marcel and Mark were up to in the photo in the bottom left... ;) hehhe... Then there's some more live photos, a *NEW* photocopier picture (with like blue, fishnet material and a like weird rag doll..) My only question is - does everyone have a badly printed copy? Not *BADLY* badly, but with errors? For instance, there's black ink on Tori's face on the page "Will You Find Me If Neil Makes Me A Tree", there's massively noticeable flaws on the page after the Christmas page on the tour photo, where there are *nasty* ink smudges all over her hands and the space between her waist and the piano... If you want a -complete- listing, head over to your local bookstore and look for the book _Tori Amos Collectibles_ by Paul Campbell. I'll try going thru this, song by song Warning: Long review follows I can't remember if the merchandise available, was the same as what was mentioned before. There were 4 different t-shirts (2 black ones, one grey, one white... all different styles), one long-sleeved one, and one spaghetti-strap top, the usual necklace, tour book and poster. Ok, sorry for that boring part... just thought some might be interested. The Devlins played a good set and seemed happy. I loved the quote from the lead singer "This is our first time in Germany" then proceeded with "you sure have a lot of sex shops here". Tori started her set at around 9:25 and ended at 11. She wore the usual cargo pants (they looked blue), a blue jeans shirt with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath. Black Dove was a great opener and the band was really getting into it. Precious Things was next. Tori was really energetic, banging on the piano keys and the keyboard. I also must say at this point, that the crowd was really great. No yelling "I love you's", just the usual whistling and "whoos", and even though Cornflake Girl and Winter got the most applause, the reaction to the first two was pretty huge. The problem I had with the "heavier" band songs, was that at some moments it would drain out Tori's voice. The bass was VERY loud.. but that's probably 'cos I was quite close to the speakers. Next came iieee (see my other post). After that, Tori talked for the first and only time during the show. She said how she had gone to have dinner in the "dungeons below" of the venue, and that she'd gotten lost and ended up in a little theatre, she'd played in '92, and that she always ended up playing somewhere in the Alte Oper. "I love this place... it's good to be back". Cornflake Girl, was of course the hit for most. Tori did funny faces throughout this song, which was really cute. She was making them partially at the crowd, and partially at Steve who was grinning back at her. Tori was fascinating to look at. Her facial expressions that is. Playboy Mommy was very emotional, as was Pretty Good Year, altho the middle part rocked. The part of PM, where she sings Gloria, a yellowish light just shone on Tori and she looked up at the ceiling, like she was looking at the sky. Cruel was amazing. Then came secret time, with Here in my Head. What I found strange was that the piano in the beginning of the song (the beginning melody) was playback, and later replaced by her playing. Winter was equally beautiful. Playback for the drums started, as soon as she was finished, and was replaced a couple of seconds later by Matt, as they went straight into Horses. I love the dark version of it... even the stage lights dimmed and the disco ball started turning... it was wonderful. Spark followed, then She's your Cocaine which just rocked. Steve was going wild on the guitar.. he was in a world of his own, and I swear... there were people in the crowd headbanging to this song. The Waitress was just as great... the band really works for these songs. First encore: God was interesting, mainly 'cos she was improvising with lyrics and playing with her voice. The funny thing is, Jon Evans imitated this in the back, and he did it so well. I think he's listened to that so many times, he actually knows how she'll improvise (the "heeeeyay..." etc), and he was looking at Matt, who was laughing back at him. Rasberry Swirl was a fav for headbangers again (and who's complaining about teeny boppers here? ;-) Nearly everyone was swaying to this... it's hard not to move. Lots of interaction between Tori and Steve again. Second encore: Putting the Damage on. Beautiful. Amazing. Just simply wonderful. When she played the first bars, the crowd cheered, and a bright smile hushed across Tori's face. All in all, a great show. It seemed to pass so quickly and had me wishing for more. The only thing I missed were more songs off Pele, but I'll survive. Tori was also real sweet on her way to the tour bus later. I'm always surprised at how tiny and fragile she seems, but she's just adorable, and gave autographs, or let people take pix. Another thing that was wonderful, were all the Toriphiles waiting outside. No screaming "TOREEEE!!" or anything... just a nice round of applause for her, and the band. I really can't wait to see her again. Sorry for the long review, but if you've made it this far, I hope you enjoyed it. sabrina ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 00:17:04 -0700 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: Duh! When we're not on the road I meander and curve around till I gure out where I want to go sometimes just curving around is the funnest it gets. At about 4.00 PM, when we're touring, another sensation makes herself slowly known. The sensation is without question a presence that I cannot put a name to. What I do know is that she trys to give me and the crew clues to where the current in tonight's "show" is. At soundcheck, for me anyway, I haven't found my emotional way "in". It usually isn't until I go sit backstage and just allow myself to travel with a Jaguar Eye. Sometimes I sense one of the band or one of the crew has found an ethenic way "in" to that particular town's current - so they become a window in order for the rest of us to prepare the magic carpet ride. Obviously everybody that shows up brings a different set of maps and codes and decoding devices that decide our course. As always, I never know where we're gonig but I know we're going. They're all written in typical 3 - staff style (top = vocals, then the treble and bass accompaniment) and SOME of the songs have a distinct melody line written into the accompaniment, while some don't. I HIGHLY recommend you get together with your pianist beforehand and look over the music. Also, songs with a lot of layering and instrumentals sound a little thin with only a piano. (They'd sound good to non-Toriphiles, but to us who know better... =) ) Stick to a lot of the "girl and her piano" songs ("Winter" and "Icicle" sound beautiful..."Bells For Her" also) . If you have ANY more questions about her sheet music, don't hesitate to ask me. Have a WONDERFUL wedding!
