The artwork was shocking to me at first, but it *all* made sense to me rather rapidly. Tori was giving an answer to the critics who had pinned a "victimhood" lable to her. She was saying (imveryho) on the cover, "Look, I'm dirty, armed, with a dead cock (rooster) next to me. Ya wanna F*ck with me now?" The "piglet shot" (again, imvho) was a direct message of, "I've held so many pigs to my bosom, I've suckled so many unworthwhile men." She sort of adds to this when she said about wanting to own up to stealing fire, wanting fire of her own. The burning mattress and piano I think really hearlded her leaving the old sound and thinking about new directions, in *all* things. So I believe that the artwork for boys is "beautiful and intriguing, but in sort of a chaotic way", it is horribly disturbing in parts, and the beauty is in that very disturbance. In My Very Humble Opinion. Hey! I´m not comparing Tori to Jewel! God knows i would never, ever, say that Jewel is as great musician, Singer or Composer as Tori is.Nobody is comparing Tori to Jewel, there's nothing to compare betwen those two. Tori is so far away from the rest. I´m just saying that Northern Lad sounds a little bit like any jewel song. That´s not the same thing! I used to think I absolutely had to love every single one of her songs because it's *Tori* but then I found myself really not liking God that much (Is this just me or does anyone else sort of dislike this song?) and I thought about it and decided it's fine if some of her songs don't touch you the way others do and the way those particular songs touch other people. THe first few times i listened to BfP i didnt like it either--it did nothing for me, so i put it away and went back to the other albums. But now it is my favorite album...give it some time, if you really let the songs speak they will, there's a lot of emotion in this album and sometimes the right mood opens up a whole new perspective on these songs. > > Somebody once said that on each album, Tori is like a different person, > conveying different feelings. They're so weak. i'd definitely have to disagree on that one. i think of all the albums, tori is her strongest and the feelings she portrays are truly screaming....in my opinion, FTCGH is her weakest album...but like i said about BfP, it deserves some more time, and more listens*-jenn-* > > - -- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Girls you've got to know when it's time to turn the page, when you're only wet because of the rain"* *** *** "...I tell you there're pieces of me you've never seen..." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 22:25:11 -0400 From: agentorange2@juno.com (Rusty M Shelby) Subject: "...Choirgirl..." She (Tori) had finally given an ultimatum to her friend that she could no longer watch her inviting pain. The friend chose the guy and Tori wrote this song about her feelings. At the end of that portion, she says that her friend had left the guy and they were working on becoming friends again. But Hanna, that was a really good try at interp. I myself had thought it was about Tori's attempt to deal with all the many sides of herself. But Tori expects us to put our own minds into the song, that is why she sings in abstract. I think it's a wonderful album... I think you just need to give it more time. I mean, you've only been into Tori for a few weeks, so you probably just need to get more "into it." I really think that you'll like it more and more each time you listen to it... I'm not talking about repress Tori from exppress whatever she feels to. I would like to start saying that FCGH is a pretty eclectic album (Tori herself is a very eclectic Artist and that's one of the many reasons that makes me love her so, sooo much) So, there´s no way that it could be a prevailing sound or style on FCGH. I must say that the lyrics for "Raspberry..." are fantastic. They´re, like i said before, really "Tori originals". My music preferences are very eclectic too. With the same devotion I hear Tori, I listen to Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Led Zep, Bela Bartok, John Cage; as well as Parliament Funkadelics, U2, Portishead, Mozart or The Supremes. So, you see, is not a problem of not be open mind. How many of you could resist a John Cage record ? I love any kind of music made with feeling as well I love experimental music. I love strange sounds! About "Raspberry..." I'm not complaining for this Disco-Techno-Pop song. I just don't like it. and I still think that it doesn't have anything in common with the rest of the album, or any other Tori song. It´s not her greatest song,...big deal about it! She has gave me over these past years such wonderfull music ! I'm not gonna stop listen to her just for a one song!...OK? and by the way, if you think that energy and verve in music comes with how fast or strong the beat is, i believe you're pretty wrong. why don't you listen again to "Me and a Gun"? That's what i call energy and verve! And it's just her, singing alone, telling us all about her own rape. There's no programed Drums, or basses, or overdrive guitars, and it certainly, doesn´t have a beat. NN P.S: Hope it does make sense. As i might said before, i´m not good writing in English. But you probably noticed that allready. Didn't you? ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #204 *************************************
