Mattos Jr." Subject: FTCH & "Raspberry Swirl" I just got back from Hawaii (one week of listening to/analyzing FTCH) and I must say that the new album really is amazing. It reminds me of the state of being underwater. I have my own personal story/experience/realization/whatnot that makes "Raspberry Swirl" a meaningful song for me. I will analyze it line by line. This pertains to my best friend, Nina, and my relationship with her as well as her relationship with her boyfriends. (repeating lyrics ommitted) "I am not your senorita" I am not Nina's big sister, and (to Nina's boyfriends) I am not "just one of the girls" "I am not from your tribe" I am not female, I am male. "In the garden I did no crime" I am not to blame for the relationship trouble. "If you want inside her well" (this line is addressed to suitors) If you want to be allowed access into the dark, secret, not-pretty side of Nina's psyche, like a dark well, rather than just skimming the facade she wears of carefree-ness (like "if you want to enter the well of her mind") "Boy you better make her raspberry swirl" (this line is also addressed to suitors) You need to allow Nina to get a kick out of finding out your dark side. "Things are getting desperate when all the boys can't be men" (addressed to a general audience/myself) things are pretty bad when boys would still ask Nina out on dates and try to prevent her from talking to me when we were still considering each other boyfriend and girlfriend, and even when we are best friends and people prevent us from talking to each other. "Everybody knows I'm her friend" (to a general audience) Everyone knows we are best friends, so why are you trying to keep us from talking to each other? "Everybody knows I'm her man" (to a general audience) Everyone knows we are "an item" and so why are you asking her out on dates? "I don't aim so high" (to Nina) I'm not particular in how you act, Nina. "In my heart I did no crime" Since I didn't do anything wrong, why are these people treating me like this? I don't know if anyone will be able to decipher that, but oh well, that is how I feel. And, so far, FTCH is tied with Victoria Williams's new album "Musings of a Creekdipper" for the All The Dried Roses award for "Best Album Design", as FTCH is such an amazingly beautiful record. I am a Christian and a Tori Amos fan. As a Christian, Tori has never seriously offended me by her lyrics. I completely agree with those of you who said that Tori is not against God but against the problems in organized religion, which is very understandable. This Spin article, however, did offend me. To say, in essence, that the existance of God and religion is only good for rebelling against?? To say that the loss of faith and the hole it leaves is a good thing because it makes for a good song?? This offends me as both a Christian and a musician! This article is one of the main reasons I stay away from magazines. As for my opinions about FtCGH, it's a great album. But it will never be my favourite. I think it's great that Tori is trying out new styles. Yet I cannot for the life of me sit down and listen to this album all the way through. I find myself skipping over Raspberry Swirl, not because I dislike it, but because I prefer the feel of Jackie's Strength. I sometimes skip over She's Your Cocaine (I'm not really sure what to think of this song yet, either) to hear Northern Lad. I've skipped Hotel to listen to Playboy Mommy. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to some of these songs. Whereas, with BfP, I can sit down and listen to it all the way through at nearly any time. I love the story of the girl and her piano. It's new every time. It takes me places I've never been. So I think I'll ration FtCGH. Sit it on the back burner and pull it out every so often. I don't want to get sick of it, but I will if I'm not careful. Once again I've written too much. Thanks for reading it all. Oh, and thanks to everyone who helped me clear up the "Out of the Tori Loop" thing, I feel a lot better now that I know exactly what to believe. I feel like I'm forgetting something. Her songs tend to speak volumes about her experiences in so direct a manner that it sometimes leaves you wondering if -- she's after -- shock value. On this album, however, she proves slightly more reserved in her approach, with the exception of 'Jackies Strength' (a stunning track) and 'She's Your Cocaine'. While many songs ('Black Dove (January)', 'Northern Lad', 'Hotel') reverberate with Kate Bush's hauntingly evident influence, Amos is somewhat less like an angel sprouting her wings on her back than she is like an angel sprouting horns on her head.
