I rarely listen to the radio, but when I do it's usually for a couple of hours at a time. And I never hear any of her songs. Well actually, I take that back. I heard Silent All These Years on B98.5 back in the summer like once, and also I heard The Dakota version of Hey Jupiter on Magic105 when the song first came out maybe once as well. I was just wondering, does anyone ever hear any of the newer stuff, the Choirgirl stuff? This song was the first written on 'Little Earthquakes'" I also heard that about some imporant guy in the record company wanting China on the album, but I don't know why she didn't pick it for the album. But as a musician I can attest to the fact that sometimes the earliest stuff is the simplest, and therefore she might not have thought it was album- quality, and needed the reassurance of someone "important." :) Love, Karen Angela ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 09:37:12 -0700 From: Yasmin Lori Ravard Subject: New article in SPIN magazine The article about Tori in the latest SPIN magazine kind of upset me. I am not sure how others feel about this because no one has commented but.... It bothered me that SPIN was making Tori to this ANTI-GOD musician. As a Christian, I have to evaluate why I listen to Tori and what her lyrics mean to me. I have always regarded songs like God and Father Lucifer and Icicle and Crucify....etc. as blatant opposition to the INSTITUTION of religion and Christianity...to twist that to mean that Tori has no belief in a Divine Power to be respected just gets under my skin because I don't think that is true. There is SUCH a sense of beautiful sprituality in her songs---now whether she enjoys the bureaucracy of the church...is another story...and there is a lot I agree with. Although I have not seen anything official, I'm assuming that Jackie's Strength will be the next single. Usually, the sticker on the shrink-wrap of the CD (you know the one that says something to the effect "Includes the songs....") indicates the songs that will be released as singles. Furthermore, the song order on the sticker is usually the order in which they will be released as singles. I do not have the sticker in front of me, but from memory I believe it lists Spark, then Jackie's Strength. I also saw/read (I forget which) an interview with Tori where she mentions that Merman will be on the Jackie's Strength single, which gives further support to such speculation (and is great news to those unable to download Merman). The video they played while going into commerical break was ^ÓTalula^Ô I do believe. I have never seen the whole thing, but I downloaded a clip awhile back and she was using that blowtorch doodle like she was in that little clip. Also, the reason why the television appearances are a whole 38 second and whatnot shorter than the album version is because she does not sing that ^Óhow many fates turn around. . .^Ô twice like she does on the album and because she could be rushing her tempo as well. Or that^Òs how my demented mind remembers it. I could be wrong, so no flames neccessary. I shall check up on it later when my nerves are not so shot. Letterman was better for her voice was more controlled, despite when she said ^Óbomb^Ô and her voice crackled a bit, but it was pretty damn cool anyway. Her voice seemed more shaky on Leno and some parts seemed off pitch. Letterman was more powerful, definitely, but her physically appearance on Leno was more amusing to me (but that is only because that glittery stuff on Letterman really bothered me). This is all my opinion of course so don^Òt eat me for it. Before Leno started, my local news had a clip of the guests coming up on Leno and Jay was standing there introducing his guests with his arms around all his guests and it took awhile to recognize Tori, then I started twitching and that was a cool feeling. On that Molasses thingy, here^Òs my thought. You know how in Scotland the say ^ÓLass^Ô and ^ÓLassie^Ô? Hence moLASSes. I don^Òt think that^Òs the reason for it, but I figured that out all by myself. You bring up an interesting point. It is too early for me to come up with specific examples right now (brain not yet working to capacity), but I think we all have noticed that Tori can be as bawdy as sailor when she wants to be. I am also fairly confident that I am not the only one who finds Tori to be EXTREMELY attractive and sexually alluring. However, I have not felt "comfortable" enough to bring up the topic of sexuality in Tori's music - in spite of the fact that sex is a large component of many of her songs. Nor have I noticed anyone else (until now) addressing such sensitive topics. As a man, I find a song like ICICLE to be very erotic; but at the same time, I feel almost as if I am "intruding" on a very personal, private and distinctly feminine event. It's similar to past relationships I have had during which emotional defenses are lowered and both my partner and I face one another sans all pretense and false modesty; that moment when I glimpse the frail needful human spirit that underlies all of the gender-specific bullshit that has been layered on since birth. This - to me - is the heart of all eroticism, and is only one reason why I am so inextricably drawn to the music of Tori Amos. Most folks get wrapped up in the human outer "wrapper", but should remember that although there is much to be said for visual stimulation and the erotic power of the flesh, the TRUE power of eroticism is in the imagination and the ability of the mind to create scenarios that tap into more than just visual stimulation. Okay - I know I have rambled on long enough (though it's a subject that never tires); but I would like to open this as a topic to those on the list brave enough to answer. What is your "take" on Tori's sexuality? What do you find most effective about Tori's use of sexual imagery in her music? I realize that this is a "touchy" topic, and that some of you might not want to broadcast such personal opinions to the list; so feel free to email me privately if you so desire. But please respond, if you feel so inclined - I am curious to hear other opinions. D. It was in the local paper yesterday. Enjoy! - -Richard - ---------------------------------------------- Published Tuesday, May 12, 1998, in the San Jose Mercury News Tori Amos' new album reaches out and touches BY MICHAEL D. CLARK Mercury News Staff Writer IT'S not hard to imagine a horde of young men going to a Tori Amos show and howling their undying love for the singer/pianist, once named one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people. With exotic red hair that looks hot to the touch and the fullest lips to grace an album cover since a young Mick Jagger, who could resist? Move through Amos' crowd, though, and it becomes clear that the loudest screams aren't coming from hormonally charged men -- or any men, for that matter -- but little cliques of adolescent girls who have made the song lyrics a framework for their identities. Since the release of her first solo album, ``Little Earthquakes,'' six years ago, Amos has been writing an ongoing self-help book on the strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and inequities of being a woman. Four albums later, on the just-released ``from the choirgirl hotel,'' her meandering self-discovery is not overtly focused entirely on personal healing, but on the nurturing of others. Still, Amos' willingness to be Earth Mother to the masses masks the private pain of her own miscarriage in December of 1996. The event seemingly has left her with maternal instincts and no one to heap them on but the real and fictional women that take residence in ``from the choirgirl hotel.'' The underlying theme of the proceedings seems to be safety in numbers, a huge leap for a woman who has always gone it alone. Musical maturity Amos has come far since her first angry songs dealing with the guilt and confinement of a religious upbringing coupled with the tragedy of stripped innocence after being raped. Songs like ``Silent All These Years'' and ``Me and a Gun'' wavered between blaming herself and anger that couldn't be reconciled. On her next album, ``Under the Pink,'' she was much more empowered, even daring to ask the God she feared, ``Do you need a woman to take care of you?'' By the release of the two-year-old ``Boys For Pele,'' Amos had become angry and defiant. If the artwork of her sitting on a porch with a stern look on her face, mud on her feet and a shotgun in her hand didn't tell the story, song titles like ``Professional Widow'' and ``Putting the Damage On'' did. Aside from soaring vocal octaves and an erotically physical relationship with her piano, Amos' signature to this point has been solitude. Her album covers have been lone images and in concert it was most often just her straddling a piano bench between a baby grand and vibraphone or electronic keyboard. All of that has changed for ``from the choirgirl hotel.'' Collaborative efforts Perhaps it's the devoted support of her fans or maybe it's her recent marriage to sound engineer Mark Hawley, but Amos no longer seems uncomfortable in a group. On a series of small club dates (which included a stop at the Fillmore in San Francisco last Tuesday) to prepare for major tours through Europe in North America, Amos played with a three-man backing band for the first time. The result, both live and on ``from the choirgirl hotel,'' is a contrast of lush and spare compositions that give her more space to display her talent. The added musical accessories have pushed Amos to a new level of performance, ensuring she remains the focus. The big, hollow drum beat of the first single, ``Spark,'' is no match for a line as personal as ``she convinced she could hold back a glacier, but she couldn't keep baby alive.'' A Tori Amos album wouldn't be complete without one or two ballads full of vulnerability and remorse, and ``from the choirgirl hotel'' doesn't disappoint. Against the backdrop of more fully orchestrated songs, however, the bare piano coupled with breathy whispers of ``by the woods'' on ``black-dove (january)'' takes on new resonance, and her calm dissolution of a relationship in ``Northern Lad'' induces goose bumps. - ---------------------------------------------- @ \@/ Richard A. It was like coming home to an idea that you needed. very comforting. i dont think that it's so anti-god as opposed to wtf is god and where is (s)he? My parents tried to raise me catholic and i was "asked to leave" the family parrish when i was in 4th grade. I wasn't a bad kid, i just questioned things that werent supposed to be questioned, excessivly (and they thought i was a bad influence on the other kids because i had a bit of a potty mouth). This, of course, brought embarrasment to my parents, but my mother seemed to sort of understand where i was coming from. And then in 1992, when i heard "one more victim" i really liked that, but it wasn't until 1994 when UtP came out that I really got on the Tori wagon. I was discussing christianity with my friend Todd, and all of a sudden i quoted icicle and then many things came crashing onto me. I still feel a bit lost that I don't know what *my* god is, but i just think Tori has had alot to say something like, its ok to not believe in what the shove down your fucking throat. and i wont get into what i do believe in, since this is not religious chat. however, its uncanny a little for me to go through my old journals and compare what tori writes to what i have written (idea-wise). especially muhammad my friend. in 1995 i had these fantastic dreams that i wrote down and when BfP came out i nearly shit my pants. (: anyways, i think that for whatever reason one likes tori is a good reason. she calls from all corners and blesses each one of us with our own strength to make it in our own lives.
