(This is not meant to be a flame, but a message to those who do want to boycott her because she doesn't fulfill all your great expectations that you should all get a fucking life.) Look guys, I never thought I would be saying this but I think its time you people should calm down and give Tori a chance to perform in stadiums before some boycott is announced. For God's sake, life isn't perfect, Santa Claus doesn't exist and her Little Earthquakes days are over. I completly agree with the decision for her to perform in stadiums, being that her concerts sell out so quickly it would be unfair to her other fans to never get the chance to see her, and besides, if you don't like the idea of seeing her stadiums then simply don't go. I'm not stopping you, Tori's not stopping you, nobody's stopping you. If you honestly think of Tori is selling out simply for doing stadiums then you have no idea what selling out is. How about U2 having McDonalds financing their ABC 1-hour special, The Rolling Stones concerts being brought to you by beer companies? And the Spice Girls promoting everything under the sun? Tori is no Spice Girl, she has to much dignity for that. I find it sad that there are so many fans of musical artists who treat their idols with God-like proporsions, then are disapointed when reality fall short of it. Tori Amos is a human being for God's sake, and anyone who expects God-like perfection from another human being should take a serious look at how they percieve others. Instead of spending your time boycotting Tori because she doesn't do everything you want her to why won't you spend your time doing more important things, like joining the ACLU, become an activist against anti-affirmative action forces, fight for sex and evolution education in the schools (you think it's all perfect now, well you haven't been reading the "alternative"/independent journals and magazines), gay rights, reproductive rights, corporate downsizing, the things that really matter. One thing I learned when U2 sold out (and Tori is no-where near that) that if I was ever to get through that, get over my own personal feelings of betrayal, was that I had to let go. You cannot live your life for your idols, they must find your own way. This is the same for the regular people out there, sometimes the only way you can help someone you love is to let go, that you can't really save anyone, they have to save themselves. If Tori is to fall, then by all means let her fall. You have to learn by your mistakes, you can't simply protect people from everything, Tori is not a child who needs our guidance. As for those who miss the intamicy, you don't have to worry too much, being that she is going to do some accoustic songs, just like she did in the "Plugged" tour. Knowing Tori, she will do smaller venues again. And so what if you don't have the chance to meet her for the 13th time, I don't give a damn, I went to two concerts and I never had the chance to meet her in my life. Let me make myself be clear about the only thing that artists are obligated towards their fans-their work and nothing else. Tori Amos is not obligated to meet, hug, and greet you, there is nothing in her or any other entertainer's contract that they should continue to interact with their fans. (OK, maybe entertainers like Jay Leno's, but he isn't obligated to have an ongoing relasionship with you.) Consider yourself lucky that she hasn't sworn fans and concerts off all because of all the rude yelling at her concerts and the screaming fans the instant they see her. Consider yourself lucky that she is not as elusive as Kate Bush who only comes out with a new album every 4 years and never tours. If you guys want to cry like babies and demand that she crucify herself for you, go right ahead, destroy her and be no more moral than the people at the Peabody Conservatory who did whatever they could to get her to do whatever she was told because they thought they were right and she was wrong. Confirm to every critic who hates Tori Amos that all of her fans are kooks and nuts. Then look back at yourself and be proud. - -Amy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 03:20:03 EDT From: MM62 Subject: EVANS not adams... um just a correction to beth's review... isn't it john EVANS?? not adams... ~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 12:25:51 EDT From: Pro Widow Subject: Re: new album sales Well, at billboard she is #17 out of 20 on the RADIO AIRPLAY charts! There were maybe a little over a hundred people at the Tower on Guadalupe in Austin at Midnight to get it (and they kept things moving pretty fast ... I'm not exactly new to the list, just in lurkdom for a while. Just wanted to comment on a few things about Tori, both said and observed on the list. First of all, we've got some very passionate people out there, which is great to see. Whoever compared Tori to a spice girl, shame on you, that's a cruel thing to do. I've been a Tori fan ever since my boyfriend introduced me to Little Earthquakes. I went out and bought all three albums in one day. LE is my favourite, even though I've grown attached to many songs from UtP and BfP. This new album is growing on me, but I must confess that it's going to take some time to get into Raspberry Swirl. And if I had known there would be such a demand for necklaces, I would have picked up dozens of them at the Toronto show. It's like a jewellery craze here. I went to my first Tori concert this year and I loved it. I like the idea of the club tour and meeting her and seeing her so close. But I don't mind seeing her in a larger venue. I felt bad for those who didn't get a chance to see her, and this will give them the opportunity to do so. Just think of it as a way to expose others to her wonderful music. I know you all love her, but don't be greedy. Every major star goes from the little stuff to some world icon and then filters down again. If you really love her and her music, you will stick with it. Feel bad for those who have never had the opportunity to see her live, small or large venue. Well, those are just a few thoughts. Back to lurking now. Lina ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 21:22:46 +0200 From: Marcel Rijs Subject: Re: thoughts and sadness Hi, I read Beth Winegarner's comments in yesterdays' Precious things digest with interest and have to say that I can agree on many things she's pointed out. As always, there's two sides to the story. Of course it's humanly impossible to play more dates and to please more people Tori has to play bigger venues. But the intimacy that I feel is very important to Tori Amos shows is rapidly being affected by this. I mean, here in the Netherlands Tori will only play 1 'normal' concert where she used to do 3 or 4 the last three tours, plus an appearance at the Pinkpop festival. Jesus, that is perhaps one of the biggest festivals Europe has to offer! And it's usually a messy, muddy affair because it's usually raining at this festival. No way in hell am I going to stand in a field in the middle of thousands of raving lunatics who only come there for one of the mediocre bands that can be found at festivals! Perhaps it's cultural snobbery, but I cannot associate Tori with the rest of the music industry that is 'out there'. Perhaps they want to market Tori to a bigger audience, I don't know. Perhaps she should have a few albums that sell less. I think commercial success is not necessarily the best thing for her. Of course I am very happy for Tori that she is successful, but the price that fans-from-the-very-beginning have to pay is starting to be too high. What with the exclusive-downloadable-tracks-for-US-citizens-only and webcasts-for-people-with-high-quality-Internet-connections. Shit, it bugs me a hell of a lot.
