The girl telling her story in the song is not Tori, it's almost as if she's channeling her story through Tori. You can really see all the separate girls on this album. The girl who's singing the song is talking about her reaction to the Kennedy assassination; it happened on her wedding day. It's her wedding day, so things are already crazy: she's 21 and feels already too old; she's getting married, something she probably couldn't even envision even a year before. She has to focus on what's going on in the wedding and her feelings there, but in the back of her head she's thinking about Jackie. The fact that it's her wedding makes her think about strong love ties: the love between Jackie & JFK and the love between herself and the guy she's marrying. The line "a Bouvier till her wedding day" is where she compares her own wedding and love to Jackie's wedding and love. (Jackie Kennedy was Jacqueline Bouvier before she was married if you didn't know that...) A wedding is a big commitment, and you're bonded for life. Then someday the one you love might get shot. You're gonna need some strength. In her head, she's thinking, "How would I react if my guy got shot? I'd need the whole world praying for me, that's how bad it'd be." The "make me laugh...turn me into the real thing...I show you some more and I learn" part is about her love and connection to her fiance. If you think about it, those words are almost like wedding vows. The next part ("stickers...sleepovers...you're only popular with anorexia") is where she's remembering herself she was young. It's the parallel between "feeling old by 21" and the "stickers, sleepovers" part. She's 21; that's young. And she can still remember the lunchboxes and sleepovers like they were yesterday. She even refers to her mom still as "Mama." But she's getting *married,* a huge life change. That's what makes her old. "I got lost on my wedding day" means she was not focused. Her mind was wandering. She was thinking about when she was little, and thinking about Jackie. She was lost in thought. The lines "if you love enough you'll lie a lot/ guess they did in camelot" really hit me hard for the meaning of the song. She loves the guy she's marrying so much she's willing to lie for him, just as Jackie did for John. (The Kennedys were referred to as Camelot, if you didn't know that.) When she's praying for Jackie's strength she's also in a way praying for her own strength. She feels for Jackie's loss as if it were her own. It could also be that the assasination did not take place on her wedding day, but years later and the girl in the song is still thinking strongly about Jackie, comparing herself to Jackie. (It's hard to tell what lyrics are in what tense in the song; it could be either way.) That's my interpretation... E-Mail me privately or post to the list about what you think. IMHO, the lyrics in that some are some of the most clear of any of Tori's songs. - -Megan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 May 1998 23:28:06 -0500 From: elliott brennan Subject: remaining shows on the Plugged tour Okay, so it may seem a bit late for a lot of people, but to anyone who lives near any of the remaining shows, this may be especially helpful. I was able to see the Chicago show, perhaps out of some pretty fantastic luck. I had gone to the venue (Park West) the day that the tickets went on sale, but they were sold out. Yeah, I didn't plan it too well in advance, but I thought the morning of would be enough. I tried asking for extras on rmta tori.misc, to no avail, and got a little tired of hearing about the people that camped out while they built the venue and all that. So the night of the show I was close enough to Park West to go over and hang out and see the big tour busses and the whole rock star scene. Maybe I'd catch a glimpse, it was pretty futile. I got there when David Poe was starting his set, hanging out in the rain with about two dozen or so other people. A guy popped out of a door and said "If we're going to do this, you'll have to get in a single file line starting with that guy over there," and pointed to someone a few feet away from me. The fact is that at the very last minute I was able to get a ticket. It was the first Tori show I have ever seen and frankly thought I would have *no* chance of getting it in the first place. It was an amazing show and thanks to good ol' Nadyne for putting out a list of things to try. Right now I'm still buzzing on the fact that I got the ticket. Ohmigod I'm Through The Door! Soon it will wear into a kind of Ohmigod There She Is kind of thing, then I'll sit in my room and look to one wall and say Ohmigod She Was That Far Away and all that. Going to the venue at the last minute is always good to do. My mom and I used to go to Bob Dylan shows and we'd get an extra ticket just in case we found a friend to go. If not, I'd just wait outside and sell it at face to someone. People do this. Just try. This was the most random and wonderful thing. Anyway, I was wondering if there are any folks out there going to any of the shows still on this small tour, if they could pick me up a little souvenier, one of the necklaces or something, I'd be greatful. I'd pick up the postage and throw in a little surprise tape (mix/boot/something). It's silly but it's the first Tori concert and it was really wonderful. Email me. Remember, just try for tickets at the venue when the show's starting. thanks for the time, elliott brennan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 01:32:27 -0700 From: Beth Winegarner Subject: Tori in Time I got home tonight from the SF show (which I'll talk about later when I have a lot more energy) and found an article in this week's Time magazine about Tori. It's also available online, at TIME's website. Here's the URL, with the story following: http://www.pathfinder.com/time/magazine/1998/dom/980511/the_arts.music_.tori_tor15.html THE ARTS/MUSIC MAY 11, 1998 VOL. 151 NO. 18 Tori, Tori, Tori! Pop's platinum-selling cult figure returns with a newly urgent sound By CHRISTOPHER JOHN FARLEY /MIAMI he tells you, "Put your head inside the piano." Now, truth be told, you don't really want to stick your head inside her piano. But this command, since it's being issued by pop-rock high priestess Tori Amos, comes with a certain amount of authority. You are standing in the living room of her comfortably airy Florida home (she also has a place in England). Her bookshelves are crammed with curiously eclectic, historically minded tomes, including Women of Classical Mythology and The 32nd Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology 1910-'11. But the big black Bosendorfer grand piano--whose propped-open top looks like a dinosaur's maw--dominates the room. You poke your head inside, your nose nearly pressing against the strings. She begins to play, hands cascading down the keys. Her playing is florid, feral--and then it's over. Your skull throbs with her music. Is this how it feels to be inside Tori's head? Amos, 34, has always been tough to figure. In 1992, when she entered the national music scene, her intensely personal style of piano rock was derided in some alternative-rock circles as precious. Today her brazen sexual persona seems a bit oversize to fit in with the Lilith Fair set ("I like a little testosterone," she says, explaining why she won't play the all-female Lilith scene). Still, she's found her own platinum niche. Her debut album, Little Earthquakes (1992), which features songs about sexual awakening, sold more than a million copies; her last, Boys for Pele (1996), which featured a photo inside of Amos breast-feeding a piglet ("My 'madonna and child'--my father always wanted me to do a Christmas card," she laughs), took its first bow at No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Amos' latest CD, From the Choirgirl Hotel, is the best and boldest of her career. Her previous CDs were often irritatingly ethereal; on Choirgirl, a full band underscores her piano, giving her music new urgency. Now, instead of being a spectator for Amos' passion, you are swept up in the force and energy of the music. "I had explored the girl-at-the-piano thing," she says. "It was time for new territory." Amos has long had some of the most fervid fans in rock--the numerous websites devoted to her portray her less as a rock star than as a religious experience in human form. Her new CD proves her worthy maybe not of abject devotion but certainly praise. Amos likes to make her voice heard. In person she's a wisp--a mere 5 ft. 3 in. with pale strawberry hair--but she is given to big technicolor pronouncements, especially on the subject of Christianity: "At five I really believed Jesus and Mary [Magdalene] were in love, and there was this whole thing going on," and "When you really think about Christianity, it is a religion without a penis." Clearly Amos has some issues. Much of the religious skepticism that pervades her thought as well as her music is a reaction to her strict upbringing (she was born in Newton, N.C., and her father was a Methodist minister). In addition, the sexual-assault theme in several of her earlier songs, including Me and a Gun, derives from an incident 13 years ago in which Amos was raped by a member of her audience whom she had offered to drive home. She is a co-founder of the Washington group RAINN (the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network). In 1996 Amos endured another tragedy: a miscarriage. She channeled her pain into creativity--many songs on Choirgirl, including the grabby first single, Spark, deal with the loss. "The album really started flowing after I started to pick myself up from my miscarriage," she says. "You realize, 'I can't create as a woman-mother right now, but I can create as a musician.'" She recently married her miscarried baby's father, Mark Hawley, who is also her sound engineer. They had been dating secretly. Says Amos: "The sound was so amazing [on the last tour], I looked up and said, 'Who's doing the sound?' And my heart was lost." In her deepest despair after miscarrying, Amos says, she started listening to bodies of water, searching for "ancient women's rhythms" in the waves. Indeed, some of her new songs, most notably Liquid Diamonds, have a natural, primal groove that draws one in like gravity. This is excruciatingly private music, but it's not insular; it's inviting. No need to stick your head in the piano. Just listen. - -- "With her litany of complaints and demands, [Meredith] Brooks has been much more of a bitch than a mother or a child or a lover." Not a ripoff you understand, just a Waitress aura? Does anyone else get kond of a tinge of sadness knowing that Boys for Pele isn't the newest album? I don't know why. I was driving to get From the Chiorgirl Hotel and all I listened to was Caught A Lite Sneeze and Not the Red Baron. It was like Boys for Pele was dying. Am I crazy? Probably. I also wanted to include this INCREDIBLE analyzation of Not the Red Baron. I didn't write it, but whoever did, shared something really intelligent and I won't ever be able to listen to it the same again.I can't find the exact post. I just added to what I remember of the original post. I'm not taking credit for it. It was written by someone named Erin, that's all I remember of the author. Here it is: Not the Red Baron Tori said one of her songs on Boys for Pele would be about AIDS. The author believed this to be the song. NOT THE RED BARON,NOT CHARLIE BROWN not anyone famous, not anyone that you would recognize by sight THINK I GOT THE MESSAGE FIGURED, ANOTHER PILOT DOWN another victim died, like when a pilot dies and people see it on the evening news, and say "how sad" and move on. Probably not knowing the pilot's name. AND ARE THERE DEVILS WITH HALOS AND BEAUTIFUL CAPES TAKING THEM INTO THE FLAMES is death (with no religious attachments not completely dark or light) taking the victims into the consuming flames of death and forgetting. NOT JUDY G, NOT JEAN JEAN WITH A HALLOWED HEART not necessarily anyone in particular with any grand disciplines or great life. just another victim. nameless to anyone not close to them. I SEE THAT SCREEN GO DOWN IN THE FLAMES WITH EVERY STEP, WITH EVERY BEAUTIFUL HEEL POINTED I think this sentence is simply showing the dignity and beautiful bitterness in the death of the victim. How even when a dancer falls, it is with utmost pricision and grace. She sees that in the victims death. Beauty. Perhaps the screen is symbolic of a movie screen with the life of the victim and their steps projected onto it even till the last flame consumes it. Perhaps the screen is a partition seperating us from the victim after they die. Very beautiful, allusive, and minimalistic sentence. NOT THE RED BARON I'M SURE, NOT CHARLIE'S WONDERFUL DOG, NOT ANYONE THAT I REALLY KNOW, JUST ANOTHER PILOT DOWN The vitim is nameless to anyone not aquainted with them. Not anyone who was particularly remembered, maybe she is wondering why she is so moved by this particular victim out of the scores of AIDS victims. MAYBE I'LL JUST SING HIM A LAST LITTLE SOUND, MANY THERE KNOW SOME GIRLS WITH RED RIBBONS, THE PRETTIEST RED RIBBONS This sentece sounds like a tribute to the deceased. Remembering the victim with her "last little sound." Red ribbons are definately affiliated with AIDS. The little girls could represent the girls left without the figures in their lives who were lost to AIDS. Am I listening too closely? Also in She's Your Cocaine doesn't it sound like she almost starts singing too early and then decides to wait for the next entrance into the song to come around again? Maybe she was going to. Who cares.
